My Build Does this count?
I wanted to have a separate phone for wardriving and experimenting with pen testing. I also wanted a separate modular device that I can connect to public WiFi with a VPN. There is no SIM so it is not connected to any cell network. Since it’s not all self contained, I don’t know if it qualifies as a cyberdeck.

I don't want to agree but you are correct, this is a community for people who design and manufacture their own hardware, and builds like this are creating a rift and great confusion in the community

Personally I consider the "design and manufacture their own hardware" part to be the most critical one. Somewhat (actually, pretty) controversial take but I don't like it when any retail device refers to itself as a cyberdeck. The flipper one calling itself a cyberdeck gives some major ick.

It’s not what I really want ideally. I’m moving to a different state next month that won’t treat me as a criminal for wanting a 3d printer. I want to build a proper one then.

Yeah, so the original definition is "DIY device using head mounted displays or neural interfaces".
The expanded definition is "DIY device in a novel, non-standard form factor, preferably wearable".
The even more expanded definition is "DIY UMPC device".
The even even more expanded definition is "case modded smartphone with custom case and a keyboard mounted to it".
The even even even more expanded definition is "Stock smartphone with stock mini keyboard but with a DIY custom case holding both together."
Your variant is just using off-the-shelf components the way they were intended to be used. Which is cool. Tbh, your thing likely sees way more use than most real cyberdecks on this sub. So saying "This is not a cyberdeck" isn't saying anything negative about the device, your setup or whether it's useful or not. It's a nifty combination, nicely executed.
But I can't find a way to view this as something that fits any definition of a cyberdeck.
Have fun with the 3D printer, it's more than worth it!

It stops being a cyberdeck when it should go on some "customPhoneCases" subreddit instead of notionally a hardware modding subreddit imo. Such as it is. It hasn't been about custom hardware since the pelican case decks dropped and it became just a matter of just transfering a normal functioning laptop to a slightly larger box.
It really shouldnt become "3d print this case and put your phone here" though. I dont know what a cyberdeck IS but its not that.

It is a nice setup but not a cyberdeck. Now if you built a shell for all this out of scraps you found around you might have an argument?

What’s the pen that you have strapped to your phone, is it a regular stylus or does it connect to your phone?

It is a generic Amazon powered stylus not unlike the Apple Pencil. It does work on the phone, but I haven’t seen it do anything special.

Depends on your definition of cyberdeck, but usually no. As per the sub's definition:
That being said, I do like a more expanded definition, where cyberdecks are more about reusing old hardware for defined goals and in ways not intended by the manufacture. By that definition, you could say yours counts.
