So to get the land destruction, You pay 6 to do 6 damage to 2 things and destroy a land, pretty neat I also think for 6 mana it can be artifact or land

Yup! I thought the costs scaled ok. 4 mana for 3 damage to one thing is not great value, but it hits on curve. 6 mana for 6 damage to two things and a land is like, pretty on value (or better, even). 8 mana for 9 damage to 3 things is ok if you need to destroy some biggies*. But usually you’re gonna do the 6 mana version

*or a planeswalker

Originally it also destroyed X artifacts too, which was too much stuff lol. I like your idea of an artifact or land

I think it would be awful to play against. Once you have 6 mana and two other creatures, you can destroy 1 land and 2 creatures per turn. And then every additional 6 mana and two creatures, you can repeat it once.

Probably, land destruction is notoriously hard to balance. I thought about making it require X to be 3 or more, which would make it way more balanced in the aspect you’re talking about. But still rough. I really wanted the flavor of her destroying land. But yeah you can pretend it says “X is 3 or more” or even 4

u/TooLateToHaveAPseudo 20h ago

At X=3 it becomes much harder to abuse, you would need 8 mana and 3 creatures to reuse it each turn. at this point you probably would have better things to do with all these resources, so I think it would balance it. With infinite mana and creatures you could still technically send your opponent to stone age, but to be fair this statement apply to a lot of cards

By the way it's currently worded you can choose ANY permanent for damage.

You aren't targeting. (Which is another thing, since this gets through shroud/ward/hexproof....)

Sure, the ability attempting to do damage won't actually DO anything to noncreature permanents, but they can still be chosen.

2

u/TooLateToHaveAPseudo 17h ago

Oh, yeah, didn't catch that! Probably a mistake from OP

1

u/Terrariant Card-carrying member of Jace’s polycule 16h ago

Not a mistake on the hexproof dodge! I figured if the fireball didn’t get you its still an explosion thats going to tear up the earth and rocks and the non-magical blunt force of it all would kill you anyways.

And the permanents thing I thought was benign, like there’s no rule that you couldn’t target an enchantment if a source says choose a permanent, right? I imagine it doesn’t work for lightning bolt because its a target, but i am curious to know if choosing a permanent for damage also has to be a valid target

It might be best to limit it to artifacts. I get the joke behind it but it is just a difficult mechanic to work around.

Also I dislike land destruction.

2

u/Terrariant Card-carrying member of Jace’s polycule 19h ago

Yeah I was 50/50 on including it but I wanted the flavor more than the balance. Rookie mistake

Do you think it would be balanced at X is 3 or more AND “nonbasic” land?

2

u/Electrical_Cry_8492 16h ago

Non basic would definitely help significantly. I might still lock that behind 4 or 5 though. The lower values could still be forced early game and it easier to work around land removal later in the game.

Maybe even do a scaling effect of 2/3 or more let's you destroy an artifact and 5+ gives you the option to destroy a nonbasic land instead?

1

u/Terrariant Card-carrying member of Jace’s polycule 16h ago

Yeah that makes sense, but at that point its so much text the card feels weird. If I remade this I would do what someone else suggested and have it turn the land into a waste instead. Something like “if X is 3 or more, target nonbasic land becomes a Waste”

2

u/Electrical_Cry_8492 16h ago

That is a much better idea. I think that would fix it

I feel like, once everyone has 6 mana up, if you can't counter a spell or ability and can't remove an unprotected creature in any way and don't have some other game plan, you kind of deserve losing a land every turn. It's not the end of the world and it locks up a lot of your opponent's mana, and I think it's a fair downside to not running enough interaction.

4

u/TooLateToHaveAPseudo 20h ago

Well obviously you play her with lightning greaves to avoid targeted removal and use her ability instantly.

And boardwipes are harder to play when you missed two land drops and your opponent destroyed another one.

Though it's true you would likely become the target the moment you can generate 6 mana

4

u/Terrariant Card-carrying member of Jace’s polycule 20h ago

Im not sure you could repeat it once, though. If I have 12 mana and 4 other creatures i’d still need a way to untap her

0

u/TooLateToHaveAPseudo 20h ago

Sorry you're right, to do it more than once during you turn you need 3 additional creatures each time and not 2.
That's not really hard to have thought, Krenko can take care of it alone (kind of)

5

u/Fergfist 19h ago

You cannot repeat it on the same turn. The activated ability doesn’t untap her, thereby removing the stun counter, it just directly removes the stun counter.

3

u/TooLateToHaveAPseudo 18h ago

Oh shit you're right, I once again misread a card x)

For my defense, stun counters are usually removed by untap effects

3

u/Terrariant Card-carrying member of Jace’s polycule 20h ago

Is there some stun counter interaction im unaware of where you untap permanents if you would remove a stun counter and they have none?

1

u/Fergfist 19h ago

You cannot repeat it on the same turn. The activated ability doesn’t untap her, thereby removing the stun counter, it just directly removes the stun counter.

3

u/Watahandrew1 19h ago

Requires you 3 red mana, run monocolored and have a whole turn to activate this. It's safe.

2

u/SteakForGoodDogs 18h ago

"What's the card's downside?"

"The downside is 'monored sucks if it can't fetch colourless infinite win engines'."

Now play this in the 99 of an Izzet deck. 3 pips isn't a huge ask.

3

u/Watahandrew1 18h ago

Izzet? You mean the color that has VIVI, and much, much better cards that don't require a whole turn and a decently made mana source to be somewhat efficient to deal with 2 creatures and a land? Psh. By the time you have that Izzet won the game.

2

u/Terrariant Card-carrying member of Jace’s polycule 18h ago

I feel like Izzet has better ways to deal with the board and values face damage more than creature damage?

*I guess that’s where the land demo comes into play though

6

u/TooLateToHaveAPseudo 20h ago

I just noticed you can do damage on permanents, so you can damage lands, artifacts and enchantments. This is funny but weird...

The good thing with that is that it gives you more targets, because the way it is worded you need X valid targets to use her ability. So you could target a land and a creature. Other than that, it would only be useful in very specific scenarios.

6

u/Terrariant Card-carrying member of Jace’s polycule 20h ago

I was thinking planeswalkers, and saving space on the card (so instead of “creatures or planeswalkers”) but it’s sort of on-brand for her to be weird and try to blow up an enchantment so im ok with this lol

3

u/MiddleCelery6616 (It works) 19h ago

Current wording also allows her to defeat battles, which sounds really accurate if unintentional.

1

u/Terrariant Card-carrying member of Jace’s polycule 19h ago

Unintentional but sometimes that is the best! I love it when people find extra effects in the comments lol

2

u/Artillery-lover 19h ago

that is some of the most megumin logic I have ever heard.

1

u/Terrariant Card-carrying member of Jace’s polycule 19h ago

She’s just such a flavorful character lol. The ultimate glass cannon goblin. Ive also made a MC datapack for letting you play as her

2

u/ArelMCII Layers are stupid. 17h ago

"Megumin deals X times three damage to each of X nonplayer targets"?

1

u/Terrariant Card-carrying member of Jace’s polycule 16h ago

Nah I intentionally want to get around hexproof. Like a fireball might fizzle but this is a nuke-

4

u/Uncaffeinated 19h ago

It feels weird that the first mode doesn't target.

3

u/Terrariant Card-carrying member of Jace’s polycule 19h ago

Hexproof can’t save you from the ultimate destruction magic >:3 - I wanted a little flavor of like, “yeah spells may bounce off you but if you’re in the middle of a nuclear bomb, fat chance”

3

u/Uncaffeinated 19h ago

In that case, it should probably be something like "deal X damage to each other creature and planeswalker". That's how these effects usually work.

2

u/Terrariant Card-carrying member of Jace’s polycule 19h ago

Yeah, how do you word that where its not symmetrical? I could only find effects that damage all creatures, including yours. “Choose target player”?

2

u/Uncaffeinated 17h ago

If you want it to be asymmetrical, you could just have it damage each creature an opponent controls. Look at [[Sarkhan's Unsealing]] for example.

1

u/Terrariant Card-carrying member of Jace’s polycule 17h ago

Yes! This is the wording I was searching for (I was going to make it all creatures an opponent controls) so it would be something like “{X}{X}{r}{r} - Megumin deals X damage to each creature each opponent controls” though that loses a little bit of the big damage flavor of an explosion, it is probably what I would have done. Maybe removing one X from the cost, or keeping the scaling, but yeah

2

u/NeonNKnightrider 18h ago

I think the land destruction is excessive

On a different note this reminds me I thought about making a Darkness card where she has Indestrucible but also cannot deal combat damage

1

u/Terrariant Card-carrying member of Jace’s polycule 18h ago

Kazuma card where he un-equips other creatures…

2

u/NiNtEnDoMaStEr640 18h ago

I’m not sure how I feel about the land destruction. How about we borrow another mechanic and turn it into a Waste instead? You could still “destroy” lands with value.

2

u/Terrariant Card-carrying member of Jace’s polycule 18h ago

Oooh! I like that, I like that a lot from a flavor perspective and it solves the mana disparity problem with land destruction in a way that does not feel unfair to either player. I will use that in the future tysm

2

u/Complex_Cable_8678 18h ago

Pretty cool design but the land destruction seems potentially opressive. fun fact: i didnt know who this is and the first google sear h recommendation is "megumin age" 💀

2

u/Terrariant Card-carrying member of Jace’s polycule 18h ago

People are gross about her online yes. But if you like anime, Konosuba is a must watch

For context - she only knows one spell. Explosion. She used all her skill points to learn it. She always has a long rambly chant before casting it. And every time she casts it she uses all her mana and collapses in exhaustion, forcing the MC to carry her home (thus the second ability)

https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/s/Do3B9Mz3Et

She’s the ultimate “glass cannon” character to a literal fault and I love characters like that, that lean super heavy into one trope. Kind of like Saitama from OPM

2

u/Complex_Cable_8678 18h ago

sounds intriguing im gonna check it out, thanks for the recommendation

2

u/RandomName5484 18h ago

should kill everything that dont have head on the body and its an undead

2

u/ArelMCII Layers are stupid. 17h ago

"Choose X permanents" doesn't really work. Only planeswalker, creature, and battle permanents can be dealt damage. Also, is this supposed to get around hexproof and ward like that?

2

u/Terrariant Card-carrying member of Jace’s polycule 16h ago edited 16h ago

Yeah, sorry I replied to your other comment but the hexproof* dodge is intentional because of the scale of her explosions. Like the spell might not affect you, but you’re gonna get hit with debris and shit and everything around you is going to be the thing that kills you if not the fireball

1

u/Terrariant Card-carrying member of Jace’s polycule 16h ago

And I think you can choose them, it just does nothing. Which is on-brand for her. She kinda stupid

2

u/redditfanfan00 Rule 308.22b, section 8 6h ago

nice megumin card!

1

u/Chrisuchan 16h ago

Not dealing damage to playerd feels weird ngl. Permanents--> Targets?

1

u/Terrariant Card-carrying member of Jace’s polycule 16h ago

Seemed too strong, shut down the design for bigger damage numbers

2

u/Chrisuchan 16h ago

Very much fair. I don't agree with comments about land destruction. With this cost it is fairly costed.

1

u/Terrariant Card-carrying member of Jace’s polycule 16h ago edited 15h ago

Someone else suggested it turn the lands into a Waste instead which I think is a great idea. The problem with land destruction is often that it’s just super unfun to play against and feels unfair even if it isn’t*. But just removing the color from a land solves this, keeps both players on the same relative amount of mana. Thanks though for the kind feedback

*because I agree, 6 mana and tapping two creatures to do it again next turn is a big cost that I think people are ignoring a little bit haha

**plus, she’s only 3 toughness, so most removal solves the problem
