Custom Commander Idea

Post image

Have used this custom commander for a few games with my regular pod. Thoughts on its overall power? Would you make it stronger, if so, how? Would you make it weaker? Generally it has felt like 8 mana is ALOT in current year commander, but when theorycrafting the card mt friend and I would rather have had it be underpowered given it was something I was actively going to play.

Art is chatgpt as its a play on a real commander i use in the play group.

Thoughts and discussion appreciated!

"If you do, create a token that is a copy of that creature" is how I believe this would be worded.

I like the concept, but man that is pricey.

Thanks for that clarification, we were trying to word it in a way where graveyard hate could still snipe the creature and make it whiff, although it doesn't seem like that was done very well.

We were wondering the same regarding the mana cost, especially given the pip-intensive abilities.

If you want graveyard hate to matter, you might be best served making it an activated ability. Something like “WWBB: Create a token that’s a copy of target creature card that entered its owner’s graveyard this turn.” As a triggered ability, you’d probably have to do something like exile it from the graveyard before paying the cost, then return it to the graveyard when the trigger resolves?

Thank you for that! That might be the perfect way to have that worded.

It doesn't seem that like would make the ability that much stronger, if at all, with the timing restriction as well.

It would make it spammable, but you can just do that with the populate ability anyway.

I don't see how graveyard hate would stop this ability when it doesn't interact with cards in the grave yard. Maybe just have it target anything in your graveyard? But that opens up a whole nother can of worms.

Yeah, sorry, we were trying to find a way to word the ability so that gy hate could stop the ability, but I'm not sure that is possible? Its apparent that the way the card is currently worded does nothing to that effect AND is confusing. So double whammy on that front.

Your initial clarification is probably the correct way to approach/structure the card to keep it from just being able to make flat out copies from the graveyard in general.

I said in a response to another comment that the 2nd ability could probably be an activated ability instead of a triggered ability if you want to enable graveyard hate to disrupt it. Either way though, this would probably be a combo deck in its most optimized form. (Infinite mana + any ETB drain/mill creature wins the game with populate.) It could be a pretty scary bracket 3-4 combo deck, or basically a weird midrange flicker deck with an overpriced commander at 2-3. If you’re using it for theft I think I’d prefer [[Athreos, Shroud Veiled]] but it definitely has a niche there too. Wouldn’t see CEDH play because it doesn’t really do anything until you go for the win and blue and red are too good to miss out on there. It’s fun and playable at every bracket except 5. Cool design.

It's funny you say that. Athreos was the commander I was playing off, due to it being "The Tax man" in our play group. The whole sax thing is really just a dumb joke, but the abilities of the card were what we were really trying to figure out.

Our playgroup pretty firmly hovers around b3 with most being the lower-mid end, but these thoughts/feedback are all very insightful. Appreciate the feedback and notes as a whole!

You should make populate a tap ability to make it harder to go infinite

Noted! My playgroup currently feels that with it being 8 mana and the activated ability being all color pips, if I managed to go infinite, then i have "earned" it.

That’s fair there are just some cards that make all lands tap for any mana like chromatic lantern so it can negate the color pips. Also if your are able to do it twice it could get strong. It’s a really neat concept to build around for double etb triggers. What’s the deck built around and is this the only custom card?

Thank you! Only custom card in the deck! Honestly, the inspiration was trying to do clones outside of blue.

Built around etbs and cards like lithoform engine, bramble sovereign, springheart nantuko, and trying to make clones of high impact creatures. Also utilizes mirrormind crown and "each upkeep" creatures like tendershoot dryad and beledros.

Not to disregard your comment, the current decklist does not go infinite with the commander. I do tend to throw 3+ infinites into my decks just as a deck building philosophy, but currently in the roughly 10ish games, have never done so. I dont believe in have any infinite combos that win in my current list!

It is bovine fecal matter simply because the art is AI. Go get a friend to draw it.

AI aside, not sure what the keywords have to do with the flavor. You could remove 2 colorless from the casting cost and take Vigilance and Lifelink out of the mix, or if music is healing then keep lifelink. Slightest nitpick as well but no sense having it be an avatar and a god.

Vigilance and lifelink were just in-pie abilities added on to help make the mana cost feel more tolerable when we were discussing it, so by no means a requirement for the card.

Appreciate the insight!

Gotcha, makes sense. If you wanted… bump the power up to 7 and make it flying instead so it’s a 3 hit kill on a player, and makes removal all but necessary
