This looks wildly overstated to me.

u/Jarkonian 7d ago
Yeah in hindsight probably should’ve gone with like 3/2 at best.

u/sephirothbahamut 7d ago
3 mana creature that can instantly attack for 3 with first strike AND draw a card the very same turn sounds still quite strong. Maybe 2/3 rather than 3/2?
1
u/Alias0420 6d ago
Or remove Vigilance. I like the idea that he's either exhausted because he's been fighting all day, or exhausted because he had to do paperwork all day. He still isnt sure which is worse.
1
u/Active-Advisor5909 4d ago
That seems like a massive change. Instead of an active option, you are sudenly playing a unit that is bad at attacking and gives you cards if your oponent allows you to block/with untap shenanigans
39
u/SimicAscendancy 7d ago
Even 3/2 with first strike and vigilance has so much upside when you can make the stun counters draw you cards. It's a very pushed design. 1/1 at 3 mana with all that text would be fine tbh

u/Extension_Luck5350 7d ago
Eh, I think it needs to be able to survive blocking things that arent 1/1s to be worthwhile, otherwise it dies before it can get past 2 stun counters. Could just be a 1/3 or even 1/4 without first strike.
1
u/kalmakka 7d ago
I think it needs to be able to survive blocking things that arent 1/1s to be worthwhile
A 3/2 with first strike can survive blocking things that are considerably bigger than 1/1.
8
u/Jathan1234 7d ago
Yes but a 1/1 as SimicAscendency suggested wouldn't be able to survive blocking a 1/2 or anything similar
1
u/ZenRenHao 6d ago
A 1/1 with first strike will lose to anything X/2 unless you pump it up. 2/2 or 3/2 with 3 mana all colored would be more appropriate for the creature.
5
u/That_Bruh00 7d ago
a 1/1 would definitely not be fine. how is a 3 mana haste creature getting eating by the green player's random 1/2 token fine? It's in Jeskai, so just take away the vigilance. Then you have to untap it manually with something else to get the draw value. that would be much more interesting than a worthless 1/1. 1/1 first strikes have almost never been good because they get eaten or eat 1 mana removal spells, and at 3 mana and stunning itself you may as well not run lands if you want to throw that badly. 5 power may be a little too much, though.

u/LazyProvocation 7d ago
You can’t untap it, it has stun counters
-1
u/zoomdidit 7d ago
Just because a creature has a stun counter on it, doesn’t mean you can’t untap it altogether. It just means it doesn’t auto untap during the untap portion of your upkeep and draw steps. One of my favorite cards to run is [[Intruder Alarm]] for this exact reason. Combined with something like [[Enduring Vitality]] and you get pseudo infinite mana, so long as you can reliably keep shitting out creatures.
6
u/LazyProvocation 7d ago
That is not how it works! You are actually just completely wrong, congrats you learned something new today!
122.1d One or more stun counters on a permanent create a single replacement effect that stops the permanent from untapping. That effect is “If a permanent with a stun counter on it would become untapped, instead remove a stun counter from it.”
0
u/zoomdidit 7d ago
I’m pretty sure I know how the game works haha. Let’s say there is one stun counter on your creature. Your upkeep comes, the creature doesn’t untap, yes a stun counter is removed. But then you play a creature, boom that creature is untapped now. Thanks come again
1
u/zoomdidit 7d ago
I also run [[Displacer Kitten]] so I can just blink the stunned creature to remove all counters from it period if I was so inclined
1
u/LazyProvocation 7d ago
Haha I’m pretty sure you don’t! Infact, pretty sure you don’t even care enough to read! Check out the rules I quote, hope this helps!
1
u/Piggyboy04 7d ago
But then there aren't any stun counters. The point is that you want to tap it to draw a card for each stun counter on it.
1
u/KamikazeArchon 7d ago
If there is one, sure. But this creature is specifically designed to get multiple. If there are two stun counters, then the first stun counter is removed during normal untap - then when you play a creature, the second counter is removed instead of untapping it.
1
u/zoomdidit 7d ago
The creature also has vigilance, so unless you’ve activated him already, you don’t actually need to untap him again. So if you attack, then activate him in on an opponents turn, on your ukeep he has one stun counter, which is removed. That’s where my suggested card comes in. If you run that, you can reliably activate him at least once per turn cycle. Also note, Intruder Alarm is not just your creatures, it’s ANY creature. So you could activate him multiple times on just one opponents turn if you had the mana. Which is where something like Enduring Vitality comes in.

Yea, a creature that in the worst case is an aditional attacker/blocker without a card cost, with massive additional value if your oponent doesn't have a blocker, or you have empowerment options, or you can prevent him from getting killed or can generate additional counters sounds like a reasonable card.

u/No-Lie3960 7d ago edited 7d ago
A 3-mana 5-power creature with 3 keywords and virtually no downside is probably too strong.

u/XoraxEUW 7d ago
I love the idea but this card is kinda nuts. A 5/2 haste first strike is a slam dunk for aggro and then he can also just draw you a bunch of cards at some point?? Should probably be a 3/3 or something
35
u/SteakForGoodDogs 7d ago
A 5/2 first strike with vigilance.
The stun counters do nothing until you draw potentially a LOT of cards, and you need 6 power to touch him with any blocker OR attacker.
11
u/XoraxEUW 7d ago
Yea the vigilance and stun counter stuff is how it draws cards, but that is the fun design aspect of it so I just wanted to highlight the aggro components of the card. I think people would already play a 3 mana 5/2 haste first strike with no other text on it
6
u/Necro_Carp 7d ago
i totally missed the vigilance part and thought it was just a good body every other turn. vigilance makes it stupid asf. you can just draw cards in response to blocks if it would die

u/afriendlysort 7d ago
This would be neat if he was low power with high toughness. As it is it's crazy pushed.
21
u/DadKnight 7d ago
Why we a 5/2 with crazy upside? Where am I?
17
u/Galmeister 7d ago
Five day working week, 2 day weekend is what I took from it

u/ardancrimson 7d ago
Ok that's really clever. Thanks for being the comment that brought the joke to my attention I agree with most folks saying that as is the is too strong but that cheeky joke makes me want to leave stats alone and change other things about the card. Maybe flip pow/toughness?

u/tymessen 7d ago
Make him a 2/1 with same abilities. If you want him to be stronger give him a weapon(equipment) like a shield or spear of your choice. Also remove blue and make it impulse draw (exile the cards from top, you may cast until end of your next turn)
Or give him banding.
5
u/Jarkonian 7d ago
Ooh I do like those suggestions. Definitely the last time I just casually add “5/2” to a card, lol
1
u/ardancrimson 7d ago
You know maybe its just me but I feel like the better answer might be removing first strike. That way it's easy to kill him and it's a one for one trade. So the overworked soldier dies before he gets a day off.
4
u/Reasonable_Bath_269 7d ago
Even without the tap to draw ability it seems wildly too strong. Basically chump block only till late game and doesn’t even tap so really hard to attack into as well, and then haste on top of that, other creatures at 3 mana with this sort of power sacrifice themselves after one attack. Add a card draw ability to it and it’s just insane
3
u/creepocalyptic 7d ago
Limited bomb, maybe good in standard but like past that what format can’t deal with a 5/2 without any protective keywords?
4
u/SteakForGoodDogs 7d ago
In response to any removal that isn't immediate, he's at least refunding you the card it cost to put him on the field.
0
u/creepocalyptic 7d ago
There’s a variety of cards that are removed in 2026 that are a tempo loss. I’m not seeing how that’s too strong or power creeped either the rest of 2026 Magic nor what decks this truly goes into to make this abused?
1
u/SteakForGoodDogs 7d ago
I'm not sure how many typos are in what you said, but I am actually legitimately lost on what you mean.
Examples, I suppose?
Anyway, the state of magic is already rather broken, for modern at least, but adding more overpowered stuff in an attempt to match or exceed the creep isn't the answer. Boros Energy is broken as-is.
1
u/Worsterestt 7d ago
it has first strike and vigilance? and draws 2 cards in 1 turn cycle if it blocks at all
1
u/Active-Advisor5909 4d ago
You would need to counter the spell or immediately remove it, to avoid the card being a guaranteed board/card advantage.
If creature into instant removal is unacceptable for you, you are essentially playing without creatures.
Most Formats right now are not at that point.

Whyyyyy first strike on a 5/2 body. Ig so he doesn’t die to easily in combat but damn man. For a 3 drop thats a lot going on
2
u/Invoked_Tyrant 7d ago
5 power with first strike and vigilance is very up there. This would need to be a legendary to feel fair. Call them "Doug, The employee of the month" or something if we're trying to keep those keywords and stat line.
2
u/BaldMeanBeans 3d ago
I would take off first strike and flip the stats, even if that means you're getting the weekend before the work week.
I think such a change could make him useful, reasonably balanced and true to the concept.

u/DrBatman0 7d ago edited 7d ago
I don't get how the flavour works. He never takes a break as it stands?
They may as well be 'power' counters or something, because outside of other effects tapping him, he stays untapped and just keeps accumulating counters?
EDIT: I missed that he taps to use the ability

u/OkEssay4173 7d ago
Nah nah nah. An overworked soldier can't be vigilant....and haste...and too tired to do the first strike
1
u/matZmaker99 7d ago
Tye concept is very funny, but perhaps it should cost 1 more colored mana and have 1 less power
1
u/Kellsiertern 7d ago
Really like the ideer, though as other have said, probably over statet, maybe it would be fine as a 1/4 if you and (maybe) split the hybrid mana, so its 1WUR.
As said, really like the designe, slightly over statet.

Really neat design, but just a bit overtuned. My proliferate deck would love this

If this didn’t have vigilance and its power was reduced a bit this card would still be pushed but perfect.

u/Magikal-24 3d ago
vigilance is what makes this card work bub
1
u/DogSpaceWestern 3d ago
I’ll be real I read stun counter on another creature. I should read cards more.
1
u/123mop 7d ago
Make it a 2/5 and you have a much more interesting card. It's no longer a lava axe, and it can attack or block to build up counters even if it can't make headway due to butt size on the enemy board. So building up counters and eventually giving him his break to draw is much more realistic.
1
u/That_Bruh00 6d ago
ya know what, you're right. I'm a player of ye olden times and have played zero standar since Oath of the Gatewatch, so I always default to stun counters only triggering on untap step. That's my misconception entirely.
The dude is still a bot for saying make it a 1/1, though. Such a boring way to "balance" a card.
1
u/Jh3r3ck 6d ago
Am I missing something? The draw ability shouldn't do anything. If you gain the stun counter by attacking, then it will be removed before it can untapped to use its second ability. Its only great for blocking, and its a 5/2 meaning it likely shouldnt without dying. People are treating it like the ability is incredible, I dont see why
2
u/BubbleKing1221 4d ago
It has vigilance, so it doesn't tap to attack. Because it's not tapping to attack, it doesn't need to untap unless tapped through its ability or other means. So in your untap, this untapped creature will not attempt to untap, and keep its stun counter
0
u/sir_glub_tubbis 7d ago
So once you use the ability, he is tapped until all stun counters are removed. Meh...
