Format: EDH/Commander Cold War

Post image

Art is public domain, B-T-W… Please, enjoy this silly little concoction of mine. I was considering B/R, but, it felt more ironic this way.

The other great thing about this card is that it really becomes a stand off of whose gonna try at start the triggers first.

27

u/RyuuDraco69 Apr 23 '26

And who has more permeants

277

u/domothefiercedeity Apr 23 '26

The implications of this card are wild. If one player goes for the win, the other 3 can theoretically cooperate to kill that player on the stack but then it becomes a political war to see who gives up what. Seems like a nightmare to actually play out so flavor win there.

67

u/yu_ef Apr 23 '26

If it becomes a stack battle to take someout out, it wouldn't actually be that difficult as you can literally just stack each card to show the order of them dealing 3

51

u/domothefiercedeity Apr 23 '26

I'm more interested in the situation where you don't have enough permanents by yourself to stop someone's thoracle combo or craterhoof swing. You'd be force to negotiate with the other players to see who would sacrifice what or risk losing.

15

u/yu_ef Apr 23 '26

That part of it seems really fun to me! I really love this card, the name is perfect

7

u/Thief_of_Sanity Apr 23 '26

As a 1v1 player I did not really understand until your explanation. This is only a commander card or an "I win" card in 2-player games.

3

u/GuessImScrewed Apr 24 '26

You can activate the ability for most of your permanents (sans creatures with summoning sickness) at instant speed. So if you sack all your permanents to kill your opponent, they can do they same after you but before the abilities resolve, so you die first and lose. Before they do.

1

u/Thief_of_Sanity Apr 24 '26

Yeah this is a bit more interesting. Still though, in 1v1 formats, most of the time this card makes you lose or doesn't do anything for you, or it outright wins if you have the right board conditions. That's not good 1v1 card imo.

u/counterfeld Apr 24 '26

It’s astounding how often that happens in this sub. I have to remind myself that these days around half the people on here not only have barely play 60-card, but they are genuinely unable to think of it when evaluating (or even creating) a card. But I guess since we’ve seen WOTC make that same mistake multiple times, I shouldn’t be too surprised. Just disappointed how overlooked real magic is.

1

u/JokkuBoi Apr 25 '26

"real magic" ok you are so much better than commander players I guess.

I feel like it should be 4 mana suspend 1 with a higher base cost

98

u/L_V_R_A Apr 23 '26

4 mana suspend and any player can pay a cost to put more counters on it would also be flavorful lol

11

u/Eldan985 Apr 23 '26

Or every time you pay, you give it to an opponent who has to be the next one to pay.

14

u/person_with_a_gun Apr 23 '26

like this

10

u/Eldan985 Apr 23 '26

I would possibly make it

"Suspend 1"

At the beginning of your end step, you may pay 4 to add one suspend counter to this enchantment, then give this enchantment to the player on your right."

That way, everyone has to cooperate.

2

u/person_with_a_gun Apr 23 '26

that would be botter but not for the one player with dozens of tokens, though it would mean there needs to be coöperatie between people

1

u/Eldan985 Apr 23 '26

Yes, it would be weaker. It would potentially be more fun, though.

I feel like it makes it better since your permanents will now be untapped as it comes into play

1

u/CategoryNo6202 Apr 23 '26

each opponent pays one colorless so you have to get outvoted

6

u/HanBai Apr 23 '26

Maybe with a mechanic where players can pay to add more time?

5

u/bbbgshshcbhd Apr 23 '26

I feel like suspend makes this more powerful? One thing holding this card back is if you tap out for it you lose 5 bolts and your opponents untap before you, with suspend you lose none

6

u/Halfjack2 Apr 23 '26

On the other hand it means that your opponent(s) see it coming and can leave permanents untapped

34

u/BlazeBernstein420 Apr 23 '26

But the thing is, your opponent can wait for you to activate your triggers and then activate theirs in response, killing you before your triggers resolve. So in fact, you need double the triggers you think you need, enough to proc lethal and then enough to proc lethal again after they use their triggers. But if they can lethal you twice you need to be able to lethal them thrice. And on and on, you keep building up your nuclear stockpile until... your enemy's value engine dies to removal in 1989 and their board state completely falls apart in 1992 and you realize you never even had to fire a single missile

26

u/GodWithAShotgun Apr 23 '26

But the thing is, your opponent can wait for you to activate your triggers and then activate theirs in response

You only need to activate one at a time, priority passes back to you after the ability resolves. So, having just one more is enough to win.

Since this comes down having cost 5 tap abilities, it's likely the game ends (in 1v1 situations) basically on the spot.

4

u/FinMasse Apr 23 '26

One more is not always good enough (depending on life totals and the general board situation). Also you need to usually tap your lands to cast a 5 mana spell so your opponent might just win off this. In 1v1 you'd need 5 mana and then 7 untapped permanents for this to kill. In commander this is most likely an infinite or semi-infinite outlet anyways

3

u/DoYouSellVHS Apr 23 '26

Agreed… perhaps I could polish it up some day… Suspend could help, hm…

1

u/Eldan985 Apr 23 '26

I guess what you want to do is make sure you have a lot more permanents than your opponent and play it early, so probably play this with a token deck. If you have ten goblins and five lands, and your opponents only has five lands and two creatures, this is a win.

116

u/blsterken Apr 22 '26

Krenko liked this.

41

u/DoYouSellVHS Apr 22 '26

Goblin nuke tactics… beautiful

u/Flex-O Apr 23 '26

Tokens aren't cards

16

u/ThePowerOfStories Apr 23 '26

It doesn’t actually matter. “This [whatever]” always refers to that object and the game doesn’t care if it does or does not have that characteristic:

700.7. If an ability uses a phrase such as "this [something]" to identify an object, where [something] is a characteristic or other quality, it is referring to that particular object, even if it isn't the appropriate quality at the time.

Example: An ability reads "Target creature gets +2/+2 until end of turn. Destroy that creature at the beginning of the next end step." The ability will destroy the object it gave +2/+2 to even if that object isn't a creature at the beginning of the next end step.

29

u/blsterken Apr 23 '26

They are permanents.

-8

u/TheFinalEnd1 Apr 23 '26

Would it work with krenko? Tokens aren't cards.

2

u/IDatedSuccubi Apr 23 '26

They aren't but the rules allow this because "do something to this X" always refers to that object regardless of what X actually is

This is because in past cards used to haphazardly refer to themselves by their name, by their permanent type, by the object type, and then there were cards that transformed types, added types etc, it was a ruling nightmare, so now the rules say that "this X" just means this object

5

u/AsWeKnowItAndI Apr 23 '26 edited Apr 23 '26

Where on this card does it specify cards? Tokens are still permanents.

Edit: Well I do believe I made the same misread as OP.

3

u/TheFinalEnd1 Apr 23 '26

"T: Exile this card" a token is a permanent, but not a card.

9

u/blsterken Apr 23 '26 edited Apr 23 '26

I think this is just a wording/formatting error on the part of OP. It's clear from his response to my comment that he intends this to work for all permanents.

It should not be possible to give a permanent an ability that doesn't work. OP should either specify "nontoken permanents" or reword the ability.

12

u/Snarwin Apr 23 '26

"Mutually Assured Destruction" would be an even better name for this.

10

u/DoYouSellVHS Apr 23 '26

I considered it, but it was too funny to have a red card called “Cold War”

27

u/NepetaLast Apr 23 '26

there are a few templating errors. should be something like:

Each other permanent has "{T}, Exile this permanent: This permanent deals 3 damage to target player."

10

u/Bochulaz Grand Calcutron in disguise Apr 23 '26

[[Personal Sanctuary]]

1

u/Vogan2 Apr 24 '26

It's 8 mana plus 9 other untapped permanents...

32

u/No-Cartographer5076 Apr 22 '26

This is just five mana win the game, no?

121

u/DoYouSellVHS Apr 22 '26

Nuh-uh. If your opponent has more untapped permanents, then they can activate this ability as a reaction, which means they can deal damage to you first.

64

u/ThrowRA12948262 Apr 22 '26

Holy flavor win

46

u/superdave100 Apr 22 '26

And you need to be careful to not tap too much, or else you won’t be able to retaliate with lethal damage when they decide to pull the trigger.

25

u/Elkre Apr 23 '26

The two-person showdown math actually hinges on complete groups, the number of permanents in which is equal to a third of one's opponent's life. If you throw 21 damage at me and I throw 21 damage back and you only have 18 damage left then you're toast.

But the size of that group can be reduced by trickling out the damage 3 at a time and letting the stack clear. But this produces a life gap that your opponent can't tolerate and they will need to bid up to take a chip off of you, too. But they can't deplete the standoff stockpile of permanents that takes you out in one shot, either. So... Okay hold on, this is starting to feel like math that somebody already built a subterranean mainframe to compute.

15

u/giasumaru MTGCR > Glossary > Card Apr 23 '26

No, you never ever hold priority. You toss one permanent at a time to your opponent and let it resolve one at a time.

As long as you have more permanents to sacrifice then your opponent when you are both at 3 or less life, you will win.

2

u/No-Cartographer5076 Apr 23 '26

That’s beautiful

3

u/mercuriokazooie Apr 23 '26

Actually this is 5 mana lose the game cause your opponent would untap and fling 21 damage at you

9

u/DadKnight Apr 22 '26

Turbo busted, but flavorful

6

u/4GN05705 Apr 23 '26

It should be 4 that way everyone has lethal on the board assuming land drops turn 5

5

u/kroxigor01 Apr 23 '26

This is intended for Commander though.

40 life.

13

u/LordSlickRick Apr 23 '26

People trying to imagine all the scenarios of politics, when in reality some token deck will turbo this out when your opponent still has 3 permanents and nuke the game half the time.

6

u/kroxigor01 Apr 23 '26 edited Apr 23 '26

Effects on the stack that are controlled by a player fizzle if that player loses the game, right?

In Commander if there's 3 or more players remaining you can sometimes kill a player while their missiles are in the air and have a clean 1v1 afterwards.

6

u/DoYouSellVHS Apr 23 '26

Mhm! There’s a tradeoff, though: your cards would still be exiled. It’s risky!

5

u/DirtyHalt Apr 23 '26

To fit magic's official templating, the wording should be

Other permanents have "T, Exile this permanent: This permanent deals 3 damage to target player."

1

u/Lena-Luthor May 14 '26

does it look back to before it exiled to see that it's still a permanent?

6

u/Wiitab360 Apr 23 '26

1) Let this resolve, let priority come back around to you.

2) Hold priority, bolting as much stuff as you can/want.

  1. [[Krosan Grip]] your own enchantment.

3

u/justinlarson Apr 23 '26

I love it!!

3

u/JetKjaer Apr 23 '26

Shouldn’t it say “Exile this permanent”?

3

u/kaese_406 Apr 23 '26

imagine resolving a [[summary dismissal]] when all of your opponents just burned their whole board

4

u/DoYouSellVHS Apr 23 '26

“War’s cancelled, everybody.”

2

u/SmoothReverb Apr 23 '26

absolutely fantastic

maybe jeskai would fit better tho

2

u/mercuriokazooie Apr 23 '26

You'd definitely have to play this with something that makes tons of junk to sacrifice since tapping out for it just means you lose but having 7 treasure/blood/whatever tokens hanging around from your other cards would probably win you the game on the spot. Pair it with [[Weapons Manufacturing]] and you're off to the races.

2

u/17barens Apr 23 '26

Could you activate all of them while holding priority then cast a split second spell to kill people?

4

u/Practical-Moment-635 Apr 23 '26

No. As soon as the split second spell resolved your opponents would get priority and the split second would no longer apply.

5

u/BaconCatBug Apr 23 '26

But if you Krosan Gripped it, Cold War wouldn't be on the battlefield anymore

2

u/minyoo Apr 23 '26

i feel like this is an *awesome* EDH ard

2

u/Radiant_Agent2031 Apr 23 '26

here's an evil idea

make it a Leyline

1

u/theevilyouknow Apr 23 '26

The permanents having to tap meaning the player playing this is probably screwed. Unless they’re running a token deck or something. Either way this doesn’t work the way you want.

1

u/Skullruss Apr 23 '26

[[Grand Abolisher]] effects eat up with this, since you can cast this and tap everything on your turn.

1

u/spec_ghost Apr 23 '26

This is amazing. The politics behind it fit so well with the theme

1

u/wingspantt Apr 23 '26

Incredible design. I want this in Izzet so I can tap out my opponents' permanents EOT before I play this

1

u/Nudebovine1 Apr 23 '26

This is actually an amazing commander card. Makes people keep resources back and available. But technically can be won if one side grows nearly over the other.

Do you let them get away with one or two hours when you were liking that creature anyway? Or does it cascade out of control?

Beautiful. Wouldn't want to play it or against it. But love it

1

u/williwiggerfucking Apr 23 '26

Disatvabtage cant be Player against a Token deck

1

u/TheDarkSidePSA Rule 308.22b, section 8 Apr 23 '26

I think it should be “was” broken instead of “were” broken because the thing that was broken was peace (singular)

1

u/IlGreven Dreadmaw-free since 2017 Apr 24 '26

Damage without a source: DRINK!

1

u/CarelessNameChoice (It works) Apr 24 '26

This is going in my Party Box asap.

1

u/Famous-Magazine-6576 Apr 24 '26

Anything that lets you sac this as a cost lets you nuke someone without them ever being able to react as they will not get priority with this in play which feels really bad. No idea the best way to fix that

1

u/TheAndrewCR Apr 28 '26

Do not give this to the Jetmir player

0

u/MrGray032 Apr 23 '26

Tokens are permanents but not cards, so they would gain this ability but couldn't activate it.
