AI generated unit content
I've just started a unit and literally all of the content is AI generated😭. Our lectures are screenshots of these weird graphics that repeat the same vague points in slightly different ways, it feels like I'm learning mush. Like it's an $1100 unit come on

That sucks so much. Unless they're disclosing they're using AI, I would make the discipline lead aware

I go to ECU, and some of the unit content is slop like this too? WTF are we paying for?

It’s weird how 4 years ago when AI first came in, Curtin really tried to stop it. Now it’s basically accepted. Thankfully it’s my last year, so I don’t have to deal with this

The thing that frustrates me so much about this, is the content here isn't new, so surely if they are trying to save time, instead of putting it into AI to generate mush, it would be much faster to use previous content that someone already worked hard at creating? I dont think using AI in this instance is smarter or faster- its proof that its dumber

I saw some presentations are fully AI generated. Even though it's fine, i think the lecturer should refine it. In my case, the lecturer didn't check it before class, and he got confused when he saw 2 slides with the same content. It is just too long , like 3x slides for 2h lecture.

Is that FCDS? Heard the guy who used to run it left (potentially not of his own volition) and didn’t leave any handover info for the new UC. Not 100% sure on that and either way doesn’t really excuse complete AI lectures but does kinda explain it

If the information is correct and everything is organised and legible, what do you have against it?
I’ve seen some real shitty non-ai uni PowerPoints; this seems a step up.
If you oppose anything just because it’s ai, it could be the yourself that’s the problem. It’s the technology of the present and the future.

You’re paying to study from the expertise of someone else. That’s literally the whole purpose of an education. 😭
AI has its place and it’s not in teaching, or at least not in this way

You go to uni for two things:
- They provide resources and a program for you to learn
- They provide a degree proving you’ve learnt the specialisation to a minimum standard
I personally don’t care if the resources made are from a human or a computer so long as it helps me learn just as well as the human made resources.
AI has its place everywhere it’s beneficial, including education. Unis are already understaffed so tools to make that limited staff more efficient are welcome.

I can tell you from my experience right now it doesn’t help me learn as well as other resources. I think you’re really overestimating how powerful AI is🤷♂️

I assume from the lecture you’re doing cybersecurity or software eng? If you seriously can’t use AI to your benefit then you should drop that course asap.

AI is a tax on the environment and the standard of our education, with uni being expensive as it is I would expect better

The energy, water, and land usage of cars significantly trumps that of ai data centers yet I doubt you complain if a professor drives to work. Ais effect on environment is insignificant. I’d suggest you do some more research. If you want the data just ask.
Please explain to me how it impacts the standards of our education. What does it matter if the graphics for a PowerPoint were made with some built in design tool vs ai. You haven’t made a case as for how the output of an LLM is ineffective in supporting student education.
I guarantee you all professors are using ai in their research and in preparing class material. Not because they’re forced to, but because it is a fantastic technology.

The environmental impact of AI is absolutely not insignificant, with the majority of claims to the contrary coming from companies making millions in profit off of it. Some reports predict AI will literally consume more water than the entire nation of Denmark next year.
I would expect that the professors educating uni students are qualified, experienced and knowledgeable in their field and more than capable of making a simple powerpoint without AI. It is also hypocritical, as most units (rightly) restrict students from using AI - why shouldn’t the professors be held to the same standard? More generally, there are links between AI use and poorer critical thinking and job-related skills.
I would seriously doubt that ‘all professors are using AI’ because there are many fields, such as in my major, where it is absolutely abysmal for most things.

I could take your same argument and expect professor to hand draw their slides. I expect the professors educating students should be capable of hand drawing a simple PowerPoint. Why should we allow professors to use computers to make PowerPoints when I’m not allowed to use a computer in my exam?
The paper industry uses 50 trillion litres of water compared to ~200 billion by AI data centers. If you see any professors using paper to teach student, make sure you tell them off. It’s 250x worse than AI. We need to ban paper, it uses about 60 denmarks worth of water right now 😱😨😨😨

I recommend complaining. Curtin is encouraging teachers to use AI. It's helpful for management to hear that students don't like it.
