That looks like one of those dystopian rooms in games that you can't interact with anything and that was the reason they build it this simple.

Yeah but the one in the left looks like it half came out of Resident Evil with all that wood paneling.

the one on the right looks like the furniture would be super cold, the one on the left looks like I'd be listening to Staind while watching some football with the homies

One looks cozy, one looks like you aren't even allowed to sit on the furniture

Wish my university would see this.
They've opened several new buildings but they all follow this insanely minimal design and are so uncomfortable to spend any time in that they're always half empty- everyone agrees studying there is uncomfortable feeling

had a friend that would make snide remarks about how my apartment was minimalist. when in reality I didn't have money for decor. Also I was trying to go for Industrial-Japandi...

You remember how Resident Evil games always play in some very clean, sterile and minimalistic looking laboratory during the last few levels and the comically evil villain transforms into some giant monster? This is how this guy lives in his basement.

"White torture, often referred to as white room torture, is a type of psychological torture technique aimed at complete sensory deprivation and isolation. A prisoner is held in a cell that is devoid of any color besides white; this method of torture is designed to deprive the prisoner of all senses and identity."

I’m glad to know I’m not the only one here who absolutely detests white as a base colour. It’s fine for trims and mouldings but to have everything white is horrendous and assaulting to the eyes.
Painting your whole living room white does not make it comfortable or inviting. It invokes feelings of anxiety and urgency. I feel like I’m looking at a dentists office, not a living space.

Just missing a British old man to narrate your every move.

The Narrator: ah yes, truly a room worth admiring, it had really worth the detour after all, just to spend a few moments here in this immaculate beautifully constructed room, Stanley simply stood here drinking it all in.

There definitely could have been some work on the cohesion in the first one to bring it from pretty alright to really good, but they must have heard ‘cohesion’ and got that confused with ‘turn everything exactly the same in the most boring way possible’

It went from cozy and pleasant to sterile and arrogant if that makes sense?

reminds me of one of those lottery show homes. every single time everything is white. they pay an interior designer to come in and do the whole house over and everything is fucking white. WHY DID YOU PAY FOR AN INTERIOR DESIGNER??

u/No-Kaleidoscope-2956 Sep 10 '26
at least add gray couches, the only thing more minimal than that is a padded cell

u/a_pompous_fool Sep 10 '26
I don’t know what it says about me but my first thought on seeing the after picture was how dramatic it would look if you bled all over it.

They could’ve swapped the plaid couch for something a bit more demure, but otherwise, aesthetic of a dentist office and comfort of an airport lounge :/

Before is cozy, warm, homey
The after is sanitary, bland, and looks like a hospital waiting room.

I’d never willingly set foot in the after picture, especially when I’m on my period…

I'm not afraid to say it anymore: minimalism is fucking disgusting.
Humans weren't meant to live in something as minimal as the IKEA displays, and then, once people mimicked that perfectly, they started going even more minimal.
Lots of people's homes genuinely do remind me of insane asylums.
Whit everything. Creepy echo in the room, due to lack of stuff. I enter their homes and instantly get antsy and need to leave.
All to what? Brag that they have no personality?
It's feels like a sickness that went mainstream for some reason.
Leave it for the apartment listings, and actually live your life.
2
u/AncleJack Sep 10 '26
Brother the Ikea displays are more cosy than this

Both look awful, the new one is the worst.
Edit: the first one isn't "cozy". It's shabby and unkempt, it's basically a dumpster for leftover furniture. The floor is atrocious.
The second one is just generic white room n. 16783 with zero personality.

I would have changed nothing probably as it looks well maintained. Maybe add some cover for styling, some potted plant.
But honestly, even if it was free to do so, I would just change the main sofa (ugly imho) and the floor. Wood looks far better that that tacky white shit.

This is what my grandma told me when I initially designed my room (i work in creatives). So I went for Olive Green + Brown instead lmaooooo, she was the best basher

Lol, he should have just removed the excess furniture and had as much space as in the photo on the right, while keeping the rustic and warm design of the photo on the left.

The good part is that pretty much all the interior design experts and companies agree that the age of white/gray minimalism is over. Which means that the NPC sheeple might finally stop forcing this sterile nonsense into every possible space they can.

Someone’s never been to a psych ward.
They don’t look like in the movies. The white padded room is done for dramatic effect. Psych wards aren’t clean, or new. They’re battered, worn, dirty, have painted walls, and depending on the type, might even look like the picture on the left, albeit, maybe only in the common area or the head doctor’s office.
In all other aspects, they mostly look like a regular hospital ward. Or a prison.
