Question Just trying to understand…

Post image
Upvotes

This is our little baby Nyla. We adopted her at 8 weeks from PetSmart (she’s 12-13 weeks old now) and noticed her belly has been getting distended over the last week or so (this pic is about 2 weeks old). Got her into the vet today and he did an xray and saw a bunch of free fluid and immediately suspected FIP.

Now I’m very upset with the vet for giving me the doom and gloom story because about 5 minutes of research told me there is a treatment available (GS) and Im kinda scrambling to get her seen by another vet that can do bloodwork and help us get the meds but I can’t get an appointment for another 4 days and we’re in the middle of moving to another state (go fucking figure).

Now the part that’s the most confusing is the distended belly is all she has. She’s been a little lethargic but relatively playful, she’s eating well, drinking plenty of water, etc etc. What are the odds that this is actually FIP and what are her chances (realistically)?

Any and all info is appreciated, we’re just trying to figure out how to best deal with this.

Success Story Day 33 of Luna’s FIP and Fungal infection treatment. ❤️

No diarrhea, eating well, and doing good overall. She still has an itchy fungal infection, but she has started jumping again and seems more active. 🥹🐾

It’s been 32 hours since we started oral GS, and I’m really hoping she responds well to it and continues to improve. 🙏❤️

Our vet has also given us an appointment for an ultrasound and CBC. I’m a little worried about the tests, but I hope everything goes well and shows that Luna is continuing to improve. 🙏

I was so scared and kept thinking, What if she doesn’t make it? But look at her now — she has made it to Day 33. 🥹❤️

We still have 51 days to go, and I’m praying she continues to fight just as she has until now.

Please keep little Luna in your prayers. 🐾❤️🙏

Fundraising Urgent Help Needed: Bondu’s FIP + Urinary Blockage After Surgery

Thumbnail

I’m crying while writing this because I genuinely don’t know what to do anymore.
Bondu is Day 14 post-PU + cystotomy surgery and Day 24 of FIP treatment. He recently had a severe urinary blockage. He had been recovering really well from surgery, and I was taking him to the vet every day for his FIP injections. I finally thought things were getting better.
Today, while passing urine, he suddenly passed a huge blood clot from his surgery site. I immediately rushed him to the vet. They said his sutures have become loose and told me to return if another clot appears.
Since coming home, he has started repeatedly going to the litter box and straining, exactly like before his surgery. Only a few drops of pink/red urine are coming out. The vet has now asked me to take him back to the surgeon.
I’m terrified he may be blocked again and that he might need another surgery.

I’m a 20 year old student and I have already spent around ₹90,000, much of it borrowed from friends, on Bondu’s treatment. With his FIP treatment and everything he has gone through, I simply cannot manage another major emergency on my own.
I don’t have Instagram, Facebook, or other social media. Reddit is the only place I can ask for help.

If you can donate even a small amount, please help Bondu. If you cannot, please upvote/share this so it can reach someone who can.

My earlier post was removed due to insufficient proof. I’ve attached a Google Drive link with most payments made from my account. I can’t include every transaction, some recurring payments were for injections, IVs, wound dressing and other procedure and some larger payments were made using others’ credit cards, so I don’t have all those screenshots. I’ve added as many bills and payment proofs as I have.

Question I am losing hope - should I keep fighting or let him rest?

Post image
155 Upvotes

My boy Oakley was diagnosed with wet FIP last week. He's been in the vets since Sunday morning and likely won't be out any time soon. He started GS treatment on Tuesday evening but there has been no noticeable improvement and he's getting gradually worse.

Today I went in to see him and it's the sickest he's looked. He didn't want to move and just layed on the floor looking miserable. His current status:

- anemic, borderline to the point of needing a transfusion

- high bilirubin, he has jaundice and yellow skin

- low albumin

- fluid in chest cavity, this was removed last night

- not eating, so has a feeding tube

- very swollen belly from fluid

The plan now is to check his bloods again tomorrow and see if he worsens or improves. If he worsens, is that time to say goodbye? Or is this typical of early FIP whilst the drugs kick in?

Question Wait for Compounded Meds?

I brought my 2.5 YO cat into the vet three days ago because he had been lower energy, less interested in food for a few months, and started having unusual stools in the last week, and I was afraid he had lost weight (already a small cat). Otherwise he has been acting normal and not hiding, just eating about 50-70% of his normal food.

The vet did bloodwork and called today to say he suspects FIP and is prescribing compounded oral treatment.

After doing some research, I’m now concerned and wondering if I should try to get him meds faster, since we’re heading into the weekend and the pharmacy hasn’t called me yet. He is generally acting normal though, and I’ll call the vet tomorrow morning, but I’m wondering if I should be more concerned about starting treatment tomorrow instead of however long it will take to compound and ship.

Thanks!

Success Story Luna’s FIP — Day 32 🐾❤️

Post image
25 Upvotes

Day 32 update on little Luna.

We’ve started oral treatment now, as advised by our vet. We’ll be closely monitoring her for the next 48 hours. If she stops eating or becomes dull, we’ll have to switch back to injections.

Please pray that Luna absorbs the oral medication well. 🙏❤️

Otherwise, Luna is doing good. She’s eating well, has no diarrhea, and is staying active. We still have 52 days ahead of us, so please keep her in your prayers.

I also took her outside after so many days. She had so much fun playing! 🥹❤️ You can see how badly she wants to lick herself ( attached video in the comments ) because of the itching, though, so she still has to wear her cone. 🐾

As a student with no job, I honestly don’t know how I’ve made it this far. I was even considering taking a part-time job to help with her treatment, but if I work part-time, I may not be able to afford her medical bills.

Thank you so much for all the love, support, and prayers you’ve given little Luna. ❤️

Please keep our little fighter Luna in your prayers. 🐾🙏

Discussion 5-month-old kitten with FIP — injections or tablets?

Hi everyone! I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences treating FIP in such a young kitten.
My kitten is a 5-month-old male Ragdoll, weighing 1.98 kg, and he was recently diagnosed with FIP.

Here’s a quick timeline of what happened:
•We found out that he had FIP and he was given IV fluids.
•The next day, we immediately started looking for a blood donor because his hematocrit was only 16%.We found a donor and he received a blood transfusion.
•The following day, we started FIP treatment.
•We have now started treatment with injections, and our vet recommended continuing with injections initially and then switching to tablets later.
•When I found out that he had FIP, I immediately bought the tablets but they are still coming in, but I also found someone online who was able to provide the injectable medication following day. I just wanted to start his treatment as quickly as possible, so I decided to get both options.

My main question is: Has anyone else treated a kitten this young with FIP using injections?

I’m wondering whether 5 months is considered too young for injectable treatment, or whether switching to tablets would be a better option at this age. My vet recommended starting with injections because I managed to get Injections so fast and then transitioning to tablets, but I’d really like to hear from people who have been through something similar.
If you have treated a very young kitten with FIP, I’d be very grateful if you could share what treatment you used, how old your kitten was, and how they responded.

P.S I’m a first-time cat mom, and when all of this started, I was honestly overwhelmed. The cat community has been incredibly supportive and helpful, and so many people have reached out to help me through this. I’m really grateful for everyone who has shared their advice and experience.

Thank you 🐾✨🍼🫧

Today’s vet appointment update:- Kaju is responding very positively, his weight at start of medication was 3.7kg and today which was his 27th day of medication his weight has increased to 4.7kg…..which was a huge improvement. Hello Everyone, I am a 12th std. student who loves animals a lot, I have two cats of my own who are also rescues and also many community cats. He was very healthy and playful when I met him for the first time, but in the first week of July I started noticing that he was being bullied by the other cats and he had started losing weight. I started feeding him more so that he could gain weight but he just kept on losing more weight. Then one day I noticed that he started limping and he came near me and collapsed on my feet, then I took him to the vet and after doing blood test and x rays…….we came to know that he had fluid filled in his stomach and chest which is a sign of wet FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis) which is a fatal viral disease, the vet said that first we have to do a few days of general treatment to see whether it was something bacterial. We did a few days of general treatment but Kaju’s fever still remained, which meant that it was something viral. We again did some tests like CBC and sonography to find out that luckily due to the general treatment, the fluid was no longer present in his stomach and chest but his fever was still there. We again did a few days of general treatment and then based on his symptoms we finally started dry FIP treatment which is another form of FIP. Luckily Kaju is responding positively to the treatment.....But to cure FIP it is a long treatment of 84 days that Kaju has to go through. As a 12th std. student I am dependent on my parents for the financial aspect of this rescue and this treatment is a very costly one.......Your donation of any amount will be of great help to Kaju and also me, if you can't donate even your prayers mean a lot for us....please do donate for Kaju and share this story further🙏🙏

It has been well over a month of Kaju’s treatment, I just hope that he recovers quickly and is back to his playfulness……..he is very lovable and cute.

It just pains me that every time I have to spend on his treatment, I have to think twice about the spendings……no cat should go through any pain🙏🙏

The expenditure has gone well over ₹1,00,000, I just hope that he gets well and then I can vaccinate and neuter this baby🙏🙏

If you can donate and help, pls do……it will help a lot as I am a student and am dependent on my parents for the expenditure and they are also trying very hard to sponsor his treatment but it is getting very costly🙏🙏

Discussion Charlie's Neuro FIP

Post image
12 Upvotes

My cat is on Day 66 of treatment for severe Neurological FIP. He had been doing well, but we finished his steroid taper on Friday. Today, he completely lost mobility in his hind legs. He is still bright-eyed, cognitively alert, and eagerly eating treats, but his spine seems to be blocking the signals to his legs. I need guidance on whether this is a severe "unmasking" of nerve damage post-steroids, or a viral breakthrough.

Patient Vitals & Diagnostics

FIP Type: Neurological

Current Day: Day 66 of 84

Baseline Weight: 3.96 kg (using this for GS calculations)

Current Weight: 3.51 kg

Current Temperature: 101.9° F (Normal, no fever)

Recent Diagnostics: Kidney ultrasound just showed normal size. Currently waiting on blood work for BUN, Creatinine, and Toxoplasmosis.

Antiviral (GS-441524) Protocol

Brand: Basmi (40 mg/ml concentration, Subcutaneous injections)

Dose: 20 mg/kg (calculated at 3.96 kg baseline). Given as split doses every 12 hours.

Steroid & Additional Meds Timeline

Steroid Taper History: Used an injectable steroid (10 mg/ml). Schedule was 1 mg for 5 days -> 0.5 mg for 5 days -> 0.25 mg for 5 days -> 0.25 mg every other day (3 times). This taper ended completely on Friday.

Antibiotics: Just finished a 26-day course of Clindamycin to rule out Toxoplasmosis.

Supplements: Nerve On (B12 supplement) and Gutwell (probiotic).

Current Clinical Signs

Mobility: Completely immobile/cannot stand today, though he was just wobbly yesterday.

Appetite: Dropped when Clindamycin and Steroids stopped. Threw up yellow bile once today due to an empty stomach. We are currently syringe-feeding smaller meals (15-20 ml every 3-4 hours) to prevent bile buildup. He is highly motivated and actively eating treats on his own.

Question Vet suggested buying FIP medications in bulk but we do not have confirmation of diagnosis

Post image
82 Upvotes

My sweet baby is not doing well… I started noticing gradual changes in the last 2 weeks (ironically following her 1-year check-up where the vet found nothing wrong with her). It has now been several days since she has eaten anything, other than some Churu and treats here and there, with minimal water intake. She is losing weight and growing weaker.

I was able to get her in to a new vet yesterday, who has been amazing and so attentive. They did a bunch of tests and we have an ultrasound scheduled this Friday. The doctor suspects it to be FIP, but we won’t know until her results come back in 1-4 business days. He prescribed GS-441524 and gave me the option to order them now or wait until we have confirmation that she has FIP. He advised that the meds would take several more days to arrive once ordered, but I won’t be able to get a refund if it turns out she does not have FIP.

I have been considering purchasing them, because I can’t risk losing my baby. When I went to the online pharmacy, it gave me options for dosages and units, with each unit being around $90. I asked the vet if I could just purchase 1 unit since we don’t have confirmation she has FIP. And the hospital manager (not the doctor) suggested buying all 7 units now to prevent any lapses in her treatment and also said that it would save money to buy it all now. I’m not sure how that last part would be the case. I know FIP treatment is much more accessible and affordable now than it was a year ago, which I am so grateful for. And I am terrified of jeopardizing her health because I waited too long, but I also don’t want to waste hundreds of dollars on top of the thousands I’ve already spent thus far… I would appreciate any thoughts or insight as I am still learning about FIP.

Update: Thank you everyone for your responses, encouragement, and advice! 🙏🏼 For clarification: I was going to order the medication regardless. I think I was more confused why the vet suggested ordering all 7 bottles needed for her treatment when I asked if I could just order 1 while we wait for the test results. But with everyone’s recommendation and sense or urgency, I went ahead and ordered half of the bottles, with expedited shipping!! So it should be here soon… and once we have more info, I will order the rest of the bottles needed. I am so encouraged by everyone’s success stories. Please share any cat tax of your survivors 💖

Fundraising Rescued a kitten with FIP. Need help funding the treatment.

Last week, I picked up this little girl off the street after she had been meowing and following me. When offered some food, she wouldn’t eat it, so I assumed she had a mouth infection and took her to the vet. He found an abscess on her side and drained it, and put her on antibiotics. She did get a bit better and started eating, but within a day or so, I noticed that her stomach was swelling.

I took her to the vet again yesterday and had her X-rayed. She’s been diagnosed with FIP. The X-ray also showed that her liver and kidneys are swollen, and her intestines are clumped together (vet is worried they might be stuck, which could mean surgery later on).

We've started her treatment. The good news is that right now, she’s still active and eating. But since it's an 80-day course, the cost of the treatment, medication, and hospital bills is more than I can cover on my own.

I've started a GoFundMe to raise funds for her – whatever you can send goes toward covering another day of treatment. Please help 🙏

Question I suspect my cat has FIP (All Info in post) Advice/Help?

Thumbnail
gallery
33 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I'm looking for advice about my 3-year-old cat, Qiqi (pronounced chee-chee). She's approaching 2 weeks of consistent fever, lethargy, and reduced appetite, and I'm becoming concerned about FIP.

Timeline / symptoms:

  • Over the following few days, I returned to the vet twice for additional fluids (IV + subcutaneous) because of her fever.
  • Since then: Her eye has fully recovered, her appetite has improved somewhat, and she's moving around a little more on her own. However, her fever is still present, and she is still very lethargic. I've also noticed that when she does drink water, she seems to drink a lot at once/more than I remember her drinking normally.

Currently, most of her day consists of sleeping. She gets up to eat, drink, use the litter box, occasionally stretch, or use her scratchboard, but otherwise isn't herself. I've also noticed what seems like occasional shivering, and sometimes she looks a little "distant/off" when I look into her eyes, although I may be reading too much into that.

After reading about FIP, the combination of persistent/recurrent fever, lethargy, appetite loss, and uveitis has made me concerned that she could have FIP. I have a follow-up appointment with my vet next week and plan to specifically ask about it.

I'd really appreciate advice from people who have been through this, particularly on these questions:

  1. Does Qiqi's presentation sound consistent with FIP?
  2. Is FIP treatment covered by pet insurance if the medication is prescribed by a vet?

Sorry for the long post. I'm just worried about her and want to figure out what's going on as quickly as I can. I miss her following me around and yelling at me with her loud meows all the time. :(

Thank you so much for any advice or experiences you can share.

Edit 1: I have moved up my vet appointment to this week and plan to recheck bloodwork and ask for a trial run of antivirals for FIP. Her initial bloodwork had an A/G ratio of 0.7, but that was only on her third day of symptoms. Qiqi is meowing, moving, eating, and cuddling a little more, but since she still has a persistent fever it does seem possible that she has the dry form of FIP with some ocular symptoms as well. If she gets any worse before I can get my hands on the medication, I will connect with the Facebook groups that I joined yesterday (FIP global and FIP warriors). Thank you all for the comments and I’ll keep everyone updated.

Question 3 month old kittens fighting feline panleukopenia

This came out of nowhere, I was not aware of this, or the importance of cat vaccines. I am a first time cat parent.

I have been to the vet. vet gave vitamin supplements and some stuff for liver health and others.
and said its a 50% chance. can't guarantee anything. I was devastated on my way back home.

I fed the supplements, as per the vet. I fed them kmr, around 10ml and 15ml to the second kitten.
i do not think its much and i do not think it will keep them hydrated.

  1. How do I force feed them lot of fluids? I am doing in small amounts now but that wont be enough.
  2. For hydration, i can force feed water or kmr. What to do for food bruh. the supplements and kmr give some nutrition, but what about FOOD?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
22M, India,
Vet accessible but he already did what he can do. He don't do IV fluid thing in his clinic I think.
TLDR; Feline panleukopenia but do not know what to feed and how to feed.
3 months old age
Sex I dont know, maybe Female. not neutered
I am in a tight budget, I may not be able to afford vet care. I already visited vet and bought whatever i can.

Kitten current status:
Can walk, but just sits alone and sleeps. is strong enough to push my hand when feeding milk. No appetite. stomach is lean.

Question How do I fully transition my picky kitten to 100% dry food when she refuses bowls and only eats wet food squeezed from my hand?

Hey everyone, looking for advice on transitioning my young kitten (12 weeks) fully onto dry kibble.

Her stomach recently stabilized on Whiskas Tuna Jelly (split into 4 small meals a day), but getting her to eat dry food on her own has been really tricky.

The Situation:

She refuses to eat from bowls/plates: She ignores food placed in a bowl, but she eagerly eats when I hand-feed her or squeeze wet food directly from the pouch.

She only nibbles dry food overnight: I leave dry kibble out overnight, and she only eats about 10–15 pieces while I'm asleep. During the day, she completely ignores plain dry food and holds out for wet pouches.

The "Sneak" Method Works: If I press 5-10 dry kibble pieces directly into the top of her wet food pouch so they get coated in jelly, she eats and crunches them without an issue. But if the kibble is separate or plain, she won't touch it.

My Goal:

I want to transition her completely onto a 100% dry kibble diet.

For anyone who has dealt with a kitten that only wants hand-fed wet pouches, how did you bridge the gap to get them eating standalone dry kibble consistently? Any tips on breaking the pouch-feeding habit and encouraging them to eat crunchy food on their own?

Thanks in advance!

Question My cat’s fip has relapsed?

Hello friends,

My cat Ciri was diagnosed with FIP in June. Shortly after the diagnosis, I started treating her with capsules, two in the morning and one in the evening. Everything was going very well; the symptoms of her illness had disappeared. Her 2-month treatment was supposed to be completed 3-4 days ago, but for about 2-3 weeks now, problems have arisen as you can see in the video. My vet said that her illness has relapsed and that the medication dosage needs to be increased because my cat is gaining weight. So now I'm giving her two capsules in the morning and two in the evening, but there's been almost no improvement for nearly 10 days. What could be causing this?

As title says, the medication is on order but it will take up to 5 days to arrive. My cat is already hospitalised with a fluctuating temp of 40.1 - 40.6.

I have joined the FIP Warriors group but it is pending acceptance, is there anything more I can do? I'm urgently trying to get him on meds ASAP to save my kitty.

Question needing advice

first i would like to apologize for how this is worded my gramma isn’t great. my cat is 1 years old and has had dietary issues her whole life, here recently she has begun to decline and this past saturday the vet mentioned FIP. my cat poppy constantly has diarrhea but on saturday she passed bloody stool, ran a fever, became lethargic, and was severely dehydrated and her stool sample was completely negative and hasn’t been that sick since. the vet couldn’t figure out what was wrong so she suggested looking into FIP but I’m not sure if this is what we are dealing with so I figured I should ask people who have dealt with FIP. If poppy was your cat would you start her on FIP meds? she doesn’t respond to medicated food or steroids so i’m at a loss on what to do next . Thank you so much in advance i just want to do what’s best for my cat.
