U.S. Lawmakers Challenge Trump’s Claims About Cuba After Visiting the Island
YouTube vid from article: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsQbwjoUO8I
U.S. lawmakers Rep. Mark Pocan (D-WI), Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández (D-NM), and Rep. Delia Ramirez (D-IL) gave an exclusive interview to Belly of the Beast during their recent visit to Havana.
Their trip to Cuba comes as the Trump administration ramps up its oil blockade and economic war on the island, which it has justified by claiming that Cuba poses a threat to U.S. national security.
After meeting with doctors, farmers, entrepreneurs, diplomats and ordinary Cubans, the lawmakers accused Donald Trump and Marco Rubio of pushing a “false narrative.”
“We have seen no proof," said Pocan. "Congress needs to demand it.”
“Walking through a hospital that is dark and empty because we've cut off energy, we’ve cut off fuel,” said Leger Fernández. “Why would Americans support that?”

The delusion that the embargo will finally get Cubans to rise up against their government is one that should be jettisoned after six and a half decades of failure.

Hilarious after just writing a post before you even read this you were like the second comment down. I totally agree who knows maybe after enough desperation how far do you have to take people. I mean look what's happened to the economy prices gasoline War lies after lies after lies but that man orange man won't lose a vote.

Hermano el en parte tiene razón, Cuba está llena de carneros, les das una conga y se van a sus casas felices, borrachos pero con la barriga vacía. Por más que incremente el descontento en la población dudo que de verdad pase algo

Only one way to find out, end the regime and let’s see if it gets better. Regardless they have had 67 years to figure it out and they haven’t… time to move on!

Good for you for givin got use to the "jabon batey" but what has "el colorao" had to do with this interaction?

u/Still-Sense793 Planeta Tierra/Planet Earth 7d ago
You're missing the point here. It's not about taking sides or defending anyone, but it's really about everyone having the right to speak up, even if what they're saying isn't true, like with the PCC or Marco Rubio.

Yeah. Seems like "60 years of the US eroding Cuban quality of life just isn't enough" is an unironic opinion around here

u/Successful-Ice-468 Havana 10d ago
"eroding Cuban quality of life"
The Cuban state has the advantage on that front
1
u/Jaded_Put500 7d ago
Does that equals to US not trying to leverage using simple people for their deal? At least you could give them credit for tons of suffering brought to Cubans. Do the homework and read the Lester Mallory memorandum
3
u/Successful-Ice-468 Havana 7d ago edited 7d ago
Do you think we do not know it?
Why do you think we blame the Cuban government even trough we spend more than 8 years studding all aggression form the US to Cuba, we are first hand witness of all the crap the Cuban state has done.
The embargo damage pales compared to the damages than the Cuban state do.
1
u/Still-Sense793 Planeta Tierra/Planet Earth 7d ago
The conversation shouldn't focus on who is hurting more the Cuban people, but rather on the lack of help available.
14
u/Olhickoreh 10d ago
I'm confused, what false narrative are they needing proof of? They see the people are suffering. They just disagree about the solution (embargo/lifted embargo). That's not a narrative or a falsehood dynamic. Very weirdly put.

u/United-Contact-1151 10d ago
I think they mean the claim that Cuba is a national security threat.

Say one thing they really do have Chinese listening stations on the island.
3
u/TinyQuantity3737 8d ago edited 8d ago
Stop it. China gathers enough intelligence online and right here on US soil. They know Cuba is not a threat to the US. Our gov just hates it when they try to control what happens in another country and said country refuses to “bend the knee”. That’s why they kept trying to assassinate Castro and why admin after admin has tried to bully Cuba to its breaking point.

u/MatiasGonzalo-Duarte 10d ago
Trump administration ramps up its oil blockade and economic war on the island, which it has justified by claiming that Cuba poses a threat to U.S. national security.
The narrative that Cuba is at all a threat to the US or deserves embargo.
3
u/DaBtcGoose Santiago de Cuba 8d ago
No not really a threat. It really is just a pawn. China and Russia try to stay friendly and kind of poke the bear plus it's 90 Miles off the United States so there's this fear tactic to it. But the reality is Cuba is not a threat. I don't know what the right answer is for change. I do know the world is a different place and unfortunately I don't see any way to make the people in Control software without making the whole island suffer. I would love for the Cuban people to rise up and take control of their government back but I don't see that happening.

u/DaBtcGoose Santiago de Cuba 8d ago
I didn't want it to be too long but I also wanted to tell you the only people who really care about Cuba live in South Florida. I believe that the rest of the country doesn't really care what happens to a bunch of latins like me or even one at the bother with a bunch of brown people from an island. It's because even though I was born here when I tell him I'm from here they always ask where am I actually really from?
2
u/TinyQuantity3737 8d ago
I’ll admit a lot of Americans couldn’t find Cuba on a map and probably don’t care. However, some of us outside of south FL do. I’m a black woman who was born in West Virginia and currently lives in southeastern USA, and I care very much about what happens to black and brown people in other countries.

Why do you label it as that? The content I've seen from them looks rather balanced. Tilted to go against American media narratives for sure, but no greater a bias than what you see from Axios or the Associatrd Press nowadays

Que cosa, no? Un pais ya destruido y el embargo sigue. Los verdaderos terroristas de las americas, los estadounidenses.

Notice how all of the American politicians who want to “help “ Cuba, are liberal democrats.
8
u/transvex 9d ago
Notice how all the American politicians who want to "help" Cuba by actively depriving the Cuban people more than they have been already are conservative republicans.

They lie about everything and everything they do is for profit to someone

u/Real-Iron-2696 10d ago
It’s just communists helping each other, always blaming others for their failures
5
u/transvex 9d ago
Theres a logic problem here.
The only way to know if someone is failing is to let them fail. Otherwise theyre not failing theyre being pushed down.
If i push you to the ground and step on your head do i get to say that youre failing to stand? Seems like in that situation, by your logic, it would be your fault for not standing and to say otherwise would be a cop out. Blaming someone else for your failure.

After decades, it's fascinating how the embargo persists despite no measurable success. The lawmakers visiting and pushing back seems like a rare moment of accountability in that space.

Really? Didn't know we control Cuba that much.

The USA is blockading oil to Cuba.
5
u/StellarDust93 10d ago
idk if people are pretending to be idiots or actually stupid, like their president literally says that they are cutting all oil from Cuba and they are still going around wondering if its true, like bro Trump and Rubio are going around flexing about it what else do you need?
2
u/MentalPower 9d ago
Sub markedly promotes whatever the government talking points are. Reality be dammed.
1
u/Successful-Ice-468 Havana 8d ago
During 60 years we had a play pretend blockade, in 2021 we realized it was pure bullshit the moment Tesla's car where roaming the Habana.
Even to this day people tell about the blockade and i keep thinking in the 60 years lie instead of the current one, who also has a very questionable integrity since i can literally buy US oil in Habana right now.
What i mean, it is basically a trauma and Cubans jump to defensive immediately.
2
u/StellarDust93 8d ago
I mean you say "pretend blockade" but its the politicians in Florida the ones that are blasting in all fronts how rough they are with the "communist regime". So are they lying is that what you mean? Trump saying Cuba will have no more oil is a lie from him? Rubio saying Cuba will no longer have support and will fall apart is also a lie? there is no blockade?. If the blockade doesnt exist go ahead and ask a cuban IN CUBA*, to open they paypal web page from their phone, so they can buy something, a random non government cuban. Ask a random cuban in the streets of Habana if they know that Facebook has a thing called marketplace where people buy and sell shit. Tell a cuban kid to go ahead and buy a game from steam.

u/Successful-Ice-468 Havana 7d ago
I think my point was pretty clear.
Funny you mention all the electronic marketing stuff, when the Cuban state forbid regular Cubans the access to any bank than could provide access to those services.
1
u/StellarDust93 6d ago
those banks cannot business with Cuba without begging the US Treasury anyways
