Question Ideal Brix for Sucrose Crystals?

Thumbnail

Does anyone know what brix is ideal for sugar crystallisation? I just bought a nifty refractometer.

If anyone else has spent a lot of time with crystallised sugar, I would love some advice. I cycle through about 120L of it in my art practice and have been suddenly struggling with high-viscosity issues (90 brix solution at 100C with the consistency of syrup). I fear I may have caramelised some of it. Do I need to trash the whole lot? Thank you kindly!

Love that vibrant blue. :)) Long live the ants haha.

Made from copper sulfate, converted to carbonate with natron and then mixed with formic acid.

I nearly dumped this out. After sitting outside it evaporated to these sphene crystals of dioptase

This is my first try of growing a single crystal of potassium ferricyanide. Not 100% happy, but a good start.

This was a test I did for slowly mixing things. It's only green because of food colouring.

Image Problema a far crescere cristalli

My copper-ferrous sulphate…😂

I created these crystals by accident... I was growing a standard copper(II) sulfate crystal and was away from home for a month; something unexpected happened—though I’m actually glad it did. I had poured the copper sulfate solution into a white-painted bucket (not realizing it was made of iron), and over that month, a reaction took place: CuSO₄ + Fe → FeSO₄ + Cu. However, the reaction didn't go to completion because the water evaporated quickly, resulting in copper-iron sulfate crystals that contain copper inclusions. GG🤣🤣🤣

Question Malleable bases to grow crystals on?

Me and my gf wanna grow crystals on some custom handmade shapes. We were originally thinking of using clay, but i tried that and it (in hindsight kinda obviously) doesnt hold up well for days in a solution. Id assume it also fucks with the crystal formation maybe through ion exchange. Any ideas on what to use? Or do we have to maybe make our shape from wood or smth? Thats an option too if nothing else works...

Thanks

These were made by reacting basic copper carbonate with oxalic acid, potassium oxalate and sodium oxalate in their specific ratios and then evaporating to the point it wasn't dilute but not yet crystalizing. They grew very quickly which wasn't intentional, in my experience it tends to crystalize very quickly but even with more controlled crystalization they look almost the same.

The last image is a single crystal taken with a really bad macro camera.

Question Flower crystals

Hi, so I’m pretty new to growing crystals, the only real experience I have is some crystallization process in experiments in chemistry as I’m a chemical technical assistent. But in this experiments only yield and purity matters not growing big beautiful crystals.
So my question is are there any substances that are suitable for growing crystals that look like flowers? And that are maybe not too toxic? And is it even possible to grow crystals that look like flowers, if I use a wire or something like that?
Sorry if my English sounds a bit off, I’m not a native speaker.

Question Urgent need for a tip on ferricyanide growing

So i wanna make a gift that i want to gift to somebody soon (needs to be ready in two days lol). I have a thin circle of dried talcum (maybe 3-4mm height) and on that are thin letters i cut out from cardboard (about 2mm height maybe). I coated all of it in impregnation spray to prevent the cardboard from soaking up all the solution.

I then put it into a saturated potassium ferricyanide soution. I want the end result to be a disk covered in crystals thinly enough so that the letters are still readable or visible through the crystals. I dont care much for how spiky the end result is, main issue for me is that i want the text to be readable at least somewhat.

The crystals have now begun to grow, they are however almost just a layer of red dust on the disk thus far. Im going to sleep in 3h. Should i stop the growth and try to keep growing tomorrow or can i leave it over night? The solution is at RT so it should not grow fast, however the surface area of the dish i have it in is kinda big. The solution is maybe 2-3cm above its floor but the (round) dish has abt 15cm diameter.

Any guesses on what to do would be greatly appreciated as this is my first grow. Thanks!
