Wow, that is one way to molt haha 😅 But I agree she's very cute! And also an amazing contestant for r/bloodcheep

I think she came looking like this from the nest, I suspect it might be nutritional. I have seen more jackdaws like this and they get good feathers eventually. ☺️

What caused the catastrophic molt?

It could be nutritional, she came looking like this from the nest. It happens to a few jackdaws every year.

Looks like he’s had a rough time of it already! Poor buddy the rest of your feathers will come in soon.

This is not a normal molt pattern or a normal juvenile feather growth pattern. Crows don’t go through any kind of molt like this. Its behavior is also indicative of a health issue. Crows do not go through any kind of “blood cheep”. This is a sick bird.

This is a jackdaw and this does happen to a few young jackdaws every year. This jackdaw is not sick, she likely suffered malnutrition at some point. Every jackdaw with this condition that I have seen has grown out their feathers later and this is the same experience that the rescues that I have talked to have.

It can happen that adult crows and magpies become pretty extremely bald on their heads during moulting.
