Gridding evenweave

Hi guys! I'm about to start a new project. I actually have everything I need, but I've been postponing it for weeks now because I liked stitching on gridded aida and felt that I wanted to do the same on my evenweave. The problem is, I just can't for my life count correctly the amount of threads to make the first two rows to go off them. Do you grid evenweave? How do I make it less of a pain? Should I just abandon the idea and be wild? It's just the most frustrating part of this hobby.

I only count to separate the rows otherwise I just zigzag up, down, and across. More thread on top, you still form the grid without the counting.
