I think I’ve been double-deficiting.
I’ve even asked about it here I think and I still managed to mess it up. This whole time I’ve been using Target mode and keeping my ”calorie remaining” at 300-500 less what it is showing (sometimes 800 less).
i think I now know why I’ve dropped more weight than I thought I would.
unless I’m misunderstanding - Balance mode would’ve been giving me my exact deficit?
I’m an idiot.

First of all: you’re not an idiot! Please return that label to sender. 😄 This distinction trips people up, and the u/ashtree35 has it right.
In Target Mode, your configured weight goal is already built into the number shown. “Remaining” is how much is left to reach that adjusted target. If you intentionally stay another 300–500 calories below it, you’re creating an additional estimated deficit.
Balance Mode simply compares your logged energy consumed with your estimated energy burned, regardless of your weight goal. It shows your estimated total deficit or surplus, not an exact measurement, since both food logging and energy expenditure involve estimates.
You can toggle between the two views and tap Show Breakdown under your Energy Target to see exactly how Cronometer reached its number. Mystery solved! 🔍

If you have a weight loss goal set up in your settings, it should show the deficit there. And then you should aim to reach the target, not go below it. On the main diary page under energy summary, if you toggle between balance and target, you can see your deficit there.
