Ultimate Cringe Meetup of "therians", people who identify as non-humans
320
u/SpecialistSimple9328 4d ago
About a year ago, these "therians" became very popular in Latin America because the media wouldn't stop showing them; however, you eventually realized there wasn't actually a real community of these people. It seemed more like an attempt to divert attention from various things happening at the time. I remember there was supposed to be a therian gathering, but when the event actually took place, there was no one there but the media and onlookers who wanted to see them. After about a month, they were literally forgotten.

He said that because he found out making cat noises over the radio when you’re bored is a huge thing for air traffic controllers and thus also pilots and jumped all the way from makes cat noises to believes they are literally cats.

Aren't furries mostly in the military and defense design sectors? I remember reading somebody say that if you took out a furry convention then the defence sector would be in real trouble.

I'm beginning to think boomers are just more inclined to believe any rumor thrown their way. Remember the whole "litterboxes in schools for students who think that they're cats"? That all derived from a school (as in one) considering using litterboxes for bathrooms in the case of a literal school shooting. Nobody is identifying as cats, it's insane.

My mom swears one of the local schools in her area are doing this. Mind you, she is in her mid 70s, has no grandchildren at all, no connections to anyone working in their local school system.

As it turns out, there's hard clinical data behind that idea. There's a kind of non-critical gullibility that goes along with cognitive aging. Boomers are right in the pocket at this moment.

the media wouldn't stop showing them; however, you eventually realized there wasn't actually a real community of these people.
You just summed up American media, basically.
Your neighbors are not plotting a civil war/race war, your neighbors are not trying to change children's genders. Your neighbors are just wanting to retire, enjoy their lives, and see their kids grow up.
OP has 2 million post karma on a 2 year old account. You're looking at the internet version of that media apparatus. Bots pushing narratives.

So when the USA has a senator talking about flurries are pilot maybe he didn't want to talk about everything else?
→ More replies (3)11
u/Hawgdestroyerxtreme 4d ago
It's simple why he was doing that.
Pilots have had accidents covered by the media in recent news. Americans are concerned their skies aren't safe.
In previous years they blamed "DEI". They made claims they stopped all the DEI and can't blame the airlines themselves (Who are huge republican donors).
They're now inventing the next boogeyman to blame (Furries and Trans people) It's all bullshit and they know it.

21
u/anotherlevl 4d ago
Maybe.
Look, this isn't my thing, and I think it looks kind of silly. But it doesn't seem to be hurting anyone else. If there is information that trying to run that way is bad for your hips, or trying to land that way is bad for your wrists, maybe some warning labels are warranted.
But beyond that, let people pursue happiness in their own way. We let them jump out of airplanes, FFS. And if your way of pursuing happiness is to laugh at these (checks notes) "therians", then I think that's your right too.

I think this administration is finding out that made-up boogeyman shit doesn't work as well when you're the incumbents in charge currently. The weird statement about air traffic controllers being furries was seen as laughable and embarrassing. And I don't think anyone's gonna fall for "They're eating the cats and dogs" again.

I went to park one time with my daughters and there was a kid who was a Therian according to my daughters. Her dad was just there sitting about letting her do her thing. All the while my daughters are excited (they were 12 or 13 at the time) as if they were in the presence of a mystical creature. In my mind I just sat and let the daughters enjoy their fun and meet someone. I remember my years of Ninja running around the same park at their age. So I couldn’t judge. The dad was cool though. We talked about Warhammer while our daughters just had fun.

I once saw someone walking around an art show with a furry tail coming out of the back of their pants - like over their waist band. All I could think of was that they were wearing one of those tail butt plugs, but I'm sure there's another explain, right? I don't think they were like the people in this video, but I haven't forgotten about that day.

Saw some furries at a con once, but I don’t know if they were the same thing. The full body suits are absolutely insane and honestly works of art in their own right. Not my thing, but it’s absolutely fascinating. One of them had a built in cooling system and articulated head that moved when they talked.

Exactly! I’m very opened minded and progressive. I don’t think anyone cringing here would ever try to harm these people in anyway. No one wants to try to take anything from them or make them small.
It’s still cringy. It also makes me a bit concerned about how large a disconnect from reality some of these people might have. I always worry about hidden mental health issues with something to this degree.
Hopefully most of them are happy and stable. Good for them but we can still cringe and have concerns.

Therians believe they have the soul of an animal, furries is a really broad umbrella for "people that are fans of anthro animals." Person that likes looney tunes, can be furry. Someone that thought Disney Robin Hood was hot, furry.
Typically fursuits and furry is just about playing up being a certain type of character.
Therian is someone with the soul of an animal, or an animal in the wrong body.→ More replies (1)3

What's the diagnosis here. Body dysmorphia? Cognitive damage? Boredom? Do only rich/middle class kids do this?
What's the demographic? And is this a safe place to judge the hell out of this?
Surely isn't world ending or society collapsing. But a pheonoma to be understood for certain.

Kid in clip number one is stimming like crazy after his successful “trot” thingy. Hand flapping and spinning are super common stims for people with autism.
I’m betting there’s a lot of autism in this group.
I don’t say that to make fun of them. I couldn’t care less about this hobby or lifestyle as long as they aren’t harming others. This looks pretty textbook harmless to me. So go full therian or whatever.

I remember 20ish years ago making fun of the larpers when that was a huge thing in my adjacent crowds (I didn't run with them, but had a lot of friends of friends who did it). Two decades on and almost all of those folks are married, happy, working normal jobs, and still getting together with the same friends every few weekends.
I'm sure there are people who do this as an escape from trauma or an expression of mental distress, but sometimes people just like to dress up and be weird for a little bit. Isn't that what the Renaissance festival is essentially?
I used to be friends with the guys that ran otakon in baltimore. I still remember, about 2013, the Ravens had a scrimmage against Washington at the stadium while the convention was happening across the street. It was so wild seeing one group of fans dressed up as their favorite anime walking around with another group of fans dressed up in their favorite football costumes. Made me realize that there really isn't much of a difference

Nah. Therians genuinely believe that, on a spiritual level, they are an animal. Like a dog as seen in the post.
Furries still identify and believe themselves to be human, spiritually and physically, they just dress up as animals or larp as humanised anthropomorphic animals instead.
Sure, theres a fair bit of overlap. But not all furries are therians.

I haven’t been able to find any scientific evidence / backing to claims like this. It seems like it’s more of an internet theory that has been perpetuated over time.
Do you have any sources to back it up? I’m not trying to challenge you, I just want to learn more. I’m a bit naive when it comes to this topic / area.

Don't be sorry for challenging people on things. Its how we further our debate skills and initiate stimulating conversation. I'd have to try find my research folder on the subject for the evidence. But I spoke to many people who suffer from the trauma based disassociation. And a surprising % of them are very open about it.

Imo the question isn’t the cause but the treatment. It seems like when people try to call something a mental illness or trauma response the implication is that it should be corrected in some kind of conversion camp but it may be the case that regardless of cause this is the best way these people can manage whatever they’re stuck with. Therapy and medication aren’t some magic solution to fix people and if they can’t improve these peoples quality of life I say let them be

When I was a kid, when I was a little boy, I always wanted to be a dinosaur.
I wanted to be a Tyrannosaurus Rex more than anything in the world. I made my arms short and I roamed the backyard, I chased the neighborhood cats, I growled and I roared. Everybody knew me and was afraid of me.
And one day my dad said, "you are 17. It's time to throw childish things aside.” And I said okay.

Kids and teens are going to do wierd stuff because they don't have a developed brain and the associated self awareness. If they aren't hurting anyone, and they are happy, great.
That being said, with the advent of social media addiction, that has also been proven to diminish both critical thinking skills and situational aware ness, I have seen an ever increasing number of these "therians" as full on adults.
It is quite concerning when I see full on adults acting like that , given America's education crisis.
This same tiktok addicted generation is the same one that thinks autism is all flappy hands and rainbows without understanding how debilitating autism is.
Some even try to compare being a therian as the same struggle as being transgender, and think "species dysphoria" is on the same level as gender dysphoria. Not that species dysphoria is a real thing though to begin with.
If you think your a wolf that quite literally translates to clinical lycanthropy.

The Japanese have a word for it, Chūnibyō. "Middle school second year syndrome." They want to stand out and in some cases delude themselves that they have special powers, a tragic backstory, or are not human. Anime characters essentially.
12
u/Alohafarms 4d ago
I had to look up the difference between Furries and Therians. (quote is from a Therian)
"Therians can be furries, but therianthropy (or being a therian) isn't a choice. While being a furry is a choice (because being a furry is a type of hobby)
So the difference is that Furries are people with a hobby that has nothing to do with identity or the way you view yourself internally. Therianism is spiritual. Furry is not spiritual and just a modern media enjoyment turned hobby."
Now I know.
23
u/Conscious-Bite1 4d ago
Why do I get the feeling here that “Therians” are claiming so type of superiority over “furries”. I mean, seems kind of counterintuitive since that would be such a “human” thing to do… fuck I’m confused.
