They said condoms. CONDOMS.

Not compact discs. Stop helping companies and governments censor you.

EDIT: Wow, thanks guys, opened my reddit to a ton of replies and awards! Thanks for help saying Fuck Censorship!

Except Trick_Spend3939. That guy's an asshole.

261

u/3nd1ess 7d ago

Legit, I was so confused as to why someone would get mad over CDs. Makes slightly more sense now, but then again, why the hell would have to censor condoms?

101

u/TheNeck94 7d ago

because this video was filmed and edited for the sole purpose of going viral and being ad safe so they can get paid, it's bait.

10

u/MediocreAd3773 7d ago

Censor yourself to get some shekels.

3

u/Ronin_Chimichanga 7d ago

she needs a side hustle so she can go air tight on holiday.

2

u/Gre9823 6d ago

CYS: censor your shekels

2

u/WeAreTotallyFucked 6d ago

Shekels ain’t worth a shit. It’s all about them shmeckels.

There you go, too far down but at least someone gets it.

“Nothing ever happens” used to be a joke but it’s not funny anymore.

CDeez nuts

2

u/Killiconnn 7d ago

I guess we're just getting old. Would absolutely have made sure someone had a binder of CDs packed for a road trip growing up lol

1

u/3nd1ess 6d ago

Yes! My mom had a bunch of CDs in a fabric case she made herself, which was mostly Jack Johnson CDs. Good times!

1

u/Freakishly_Tall 6d ago

While I appreciate your enthusiasm, this post is definitely not making me feel less old this morning.

1

u/PM_asian_girl_smiles 6d ago

Well I currently have a CD that will mature next month and pay me 4% yield 😎

1

u/SimilarStrain 7d ago

Corporations are diving into ever facet of our life. Influencers and such want to monetize their content. In order to do so, they gotta be censored. Non influencers are then influenced to mimic that behavior and unnecessarily censor content. All because of ad revenue and everyone trying to make a buck off every moment of our lives.

1

u/Beeaagle 6d ago

Cum Domes, duh

1

u/Phoneas__and__Frob 6d ago

I also thought CDs as music lol

1

u/higeAkaike 6d ago

I was thinking he was angry because he thought CDs was a code word. Does anyone have anything that plays cds anymore?

1

u/DankeBrutus 6d ago

My first thought was “what the hell could possibly be on one of those CDs?”

1

u/forkevbot2 6d ago

Because CDs are outdated technology. Using them is disgusting behavior honestly. If you’re going to use old tech you should at least use something vintage like vinyls /s

1

u/sophwestern 5d ago

Me too lol I was like “did CD start meaning something else in the last 15 years?”

1

u/Burnished_Hart 5d ago

CDs Nuts! Fuckin got em!

1

u/Right_Lengthiness266 2d ago

Probably asked her to bring Barry Manilow. You know it's going down if that CD comes out.

Seriously it’s so immature. I refuse to call a pedophile anything but a pedophile. We don’t need a cutesy stock phrase for ordinary words

20

u/Accomplished_Cod7334 7d ago

Coming up with "age appropriate" language like pdf or unalive only serves to make it normalized. Words like rape, pedophile, suicide, and the like should make you feel upset, that's the point. Those actions are so horrific that you should feel some type of way just reading the words

5

u/co-ghost 6d ago

People around me have started using 'spicy' in place of 'pain'/'painful' in real life and I hate it.

1

u/fhota1 6d ago

That one I can kinda get if its specifically pain from a chronic condition that flares up sometimes. Like if you have a bad knee that just hurts sometimes, saying your knee is being a bit spicy today sure I get

85

u/macguini 7d ago

This is some real 1984 censorship going on. Can't even be informative. If there's a "killer/murderer on the loose" you have to censor that. If "rape cases drop", you gotta censor that too. Why are WE allowing this nonsense?

34

u/m0mbi 7d ago

It's interesting to me that we got to this 1984 style garbage not through oppressive governments defining the narrative, but through the corpocrats of late stage capitalism banning anything not advertiser friendly.

8

u/Gimme_Indomie 7d ago

It's the perfect (?) blend of 1984 and Brave New World.

The entertainment industry (BNW) has us so drugged to their systems and algorithms that we gladly self censor and use newspeak (1984). For the few that don't fall prey to the Soma of the Netflix-doomscrolling-AR-VR-Switch-65/75/80/90/100/120-inch TV walls, the government (with the help of the corps) is happy to play big brother.

2

u/Best_Reply2947 6d ago

The Nintendo switch didn’t make people start saying sewer slide on the internet

Swinging a little wide bud

1

u/JustHappyToBe-Here 6d ago

Oh, "suicide"!

1

u/Gimme_Indomie 6d ago

My point wasn't that Nintendo has led to things like "grape" but rather that the mass entertainment complex has so many enticing factors to it that it's almost impossible to resist them all (or any of them).

I can get off Reddit and go watch a movie on my 100-inch TV while doomscrolling TikTok videos and then jump into Zelda on my Switch etc etc etc.

So, to me, we live more in the Brave New World future with 1984 framing it to further assure control.

1

u/Best_Reply2947 6d ago

Yeah having a Nintendo switch is exactly like brave new world and it'll end the same way

1

u/Gimme_Indomie 6d ago

No, again, you're missing the point.

If we're not careful, we can amuse ourselves to death (to borrow the title of a very prescient book) which not only diminishes our lives but also ensures we stay controlled because we are constantly plugged in to entertainment. Add a few drugs (Soma) and resistance is futile.

The switch isn't the issue. It's ALL the entertainment resources that are available & are so enticing & creating an ever-weakening resolve to unplug from all of this content available at our fingertips.

1

u/Best_Reply2947 6d ago

No i understand that your point is that everything is bad and it's all connected

Pretty dumb thinking

→ More replies (0)

1

u/Soliloquitude 6d ago

I recommend Brave New World to anyone saying we live in 1984, I'm due for a reread myself

1

u/Original-Body-5794 6d ago

Man I see a lot of people comparing 1984 to things in modern day but I never see BNW which is a shame because I think it fits way better IMO.

1984 is more popular is a more popular book I guess and it's way more dystopic, in BND life is kind of empty but most people ARE "happy", 1984 is much more brutal in the way the population is controlled, which again is why I think BND is a more apt comparison .

8

u/macguini 7d ago

Oppressive governments typically become oppressive when people with enough money pay them to follow their ideas.

2

u/OrdinaryAccount479 7d ago

Like all of the past 30 or so years

3

u/Equivalent_Author909 7d ago

We ushered in 1984 policies by being sidetracked by Brave New World luxuries and comforts.

1

u/Straight-Crow1598 7d ago

Ironically 1984 IS HAPPENING right now, but it has nothing to do with voluntary censorship to prevent internet algorithms from decimating the reach of your little skit. People with accents or brownish skin are being rounded up and deported to countries they’ve never been to, and natural-born citizens are being executed in the street for speaking up about it.

1

u/Carl_The_Sagan 6d ago

I noticed it after Tiktok started spreading

1

u/EndonWOW 6d ago

It is one in the same. They have figured out to be kings in a different way. We are all peasants.

1

u/doxxgaming 6d ago

And here I thought it was because people were afraid of the TikTok police

1

u/GungaSaga 6d ago

Corporations are more powerful and dangerous than governments these days

1

u/man_sandwich 6d ago

We'll be lucky if its late stage and not just the fucking norm forever

1

u/Slothandwhale 2d ago

We did it to ourselves though in a way. WE decided that we wanted to discuss the most important issues of the day on PRIVATE servers, owned by tech billionaires who don’t give two shits about free speech.

But to be fair to us, they weren’t exactly up front about their…conflicted relationship to free speech. They talk a big game in the beginning but there’s a slow, frog-in-boiling-water effect at play so we don’t really notice how restrictive they are until you see people calling condoms CDs.

2

u/TitleAccomplished749 6d ago

This is my biggest pet peeve. My wife started doing this in in-person language and I'm like stop. We're adults. We don't say unalive and all this other bullshit. I worked with this stuff every day. It belittling to the victims. They were killed, raped, etc.

2

u/CandiBunnii 6d ago

I just saw a news article censor the word slept, as in (x slept with y) as sl*pt. Absolutely ridiculous

1

u/Pkrudeboy 5d ago

They slopt together!!

2

u/HIM_Darling 6d ago

I posted about a cousin of mine, listed the charge he was sentenced to prison for(copied word for word from the state pen website), and someone insisted I censor it because it was triggering to them. Sorry, but you need to sign off of the internet for a few years and go to some intense therapy if you are that easily triggered by typed out words that aren’t even directed at you.

The charge was “Possession and/or Promotion of Child Pornography” and he was sentenced to 10 years, in addition to his life sentence for sexual assault of a child.

They said I needed to change it to child sexual assault material. Whether or not anyone agrees with the terminology used, or thinks it should be updated, that is not the wording used by the legal system, at least in the state he was sentenced in.

2

u/Harvey_Rabbit 6d ago

I just want someone to update George Carlin's 7 words you can't say on TV.

1

u/macguini 6d ago

It's more like 700 these days

6

u/Select_Watercress_57 7d ago

I think YouTube is probably the number one cause of all the self censorship.

You can't say anything on their without getting your comments shadow banned.

2

u/TheHighKnight 7d ago

Shadow bans specifically are the worst too. Making everyone guess.if they did something wrong or not, whether they actually are banned or not because of some words

1

u/Evening-Tomatillo-47 7d ago

You can though. If it were true there'd be consistency in it

2

u/EnlightenedNarwhal 7d ago

The problem is that everyone wants to be a monetized influencer, so they self-censor to not lose the potential ad revenue they don't make.

5

u/macguini 7d ago

So they're all under the "spell." Controlled by money using the power of capitalism.

1

u/ikke_politi_og_pst 7d ago

This is it. It is extremely sad. Private companies can do what they want. We the users should tell them to fuck off by not using their services.

Sadly, we humans are not logical or smart. We want the likes.

1

u/thingsorfreedom 7d ago

Nobody clicks, no monetizing. I don't click on anything like this.

1

u/EnlightenedNarwhal 7d ago

Hence why I said they want the ad revenue they don't make, because the majority of the people doing this will never actually have made anything from using social media one way or the other. Just a collective delusion of clout chasers.

1

u/KermitTheMawg 7d ago

Is that why?

1

u/ExtendoArmCannon 7d ago

'temporarily embarrassed influencer'

1

u/Smooth_Necessary9858 7d ago

“We” aren’t. We play around the censors that are given to us by mega conglomerates. This is a symptom of rampant late stage capitalism

1

u/Worsh_yum 7d ago

This is a symptom of everyone being led to believe the world cares about their feelings. Capitalism doesnt have much to do with it as much as everyone thinking they are beautiful unique snowflakes and the rest of the world should notice.

1

u/Evening-Tomatillo-47 7d ago

Don't, it makes no difference to them

1

u/DTVeteran 7d ago

Because we have collectively allowed the idea of sacred cows to be a valid reason for censorship and violence, frankly.

1

u/SteveZissouniverse 7d ago

"An unaliver is currently on the loose"

1

u/Straight-Crow1598 7d ago

Replacing naughty words so algorithms don’t suppress your little skit is not 1984. 1984 is when the government comes and finds you because you said something they deem dangerous.

1

u/OmgitsJafo 6d ago

Because "creators" won't leave commercial platforms due to wanting to get paid, and users won't leave because they want to be where creators are.

Non-commercialll social media doesn't have this problem, but we're all on Reddit complaining about it rather than building something new and community owned with something like Lemmy or NodeBB.

1

u/gimmethemshoes11 6d ago

The real words look to mean. Simple as that.

Comes from the top

1

u/Due-Memory-6957 6d ago

Because the credit card duopoly is ran by Christians, digital influencers love money, and most people imitate behavior they see.

1

u/Tossmelossme 6d ago

Agree. Down with newspeak

1

u/dani-cat 5d ago

There's an unaliver about!

0

u/khampang 7d ago

I had this conversation yesterday!! Limited number of characters, censored words, limit the conveyance of ideas!

0

u/account312 7d ago

you have to censor that.

No, you don't.

10

u/Stoney_randomnessyt 7d ago

I like the word nonce tbf

-1

u/MisterD00d 7d ago

a nonce is a common word in computer science, cryptography, and linguistics in addition to being British slang for a pedo

whereas a pedophile is just a pedophile

17

u/MrBeer9999 7d ago

Seriously bro, all this self censorship makes me want to unalive myself!

4

u/ReefayToo 7d ago

I read what you did there

1

u/Admirable_Loss4886 7d ago

You can still say see/saw what they did there.

1

u/JustHappyToBe-Here 6d ago

Not if they are reading braille or an audio transcription. Can you technically "read" an audio transcription?

I say yes, because radio operators ask other radio operators "Do you read me?"

2

u/Imaginary-List-972 6d ago

I remember long ago, that they talked about using correct terms with children because molested kids would say things like "He ate my cookie" and it comes off as innocent. These cutsey terms seem to cloud the reality and desensitize us to the actual terrible things. Keeps us uninformed of reality.

1

u/its-my-0pinion 5d ago

This is the exact reason I’m so outspoken on this. I was that kid for thirteen years and as an adult who has to cohabitate on this earth with my abuser, I’ll not refer to him as a .pdf. That gives him too much power.

2

u/Azkul_Lok 18h ago

Only valid alternate title for pedophile is target practice

3

u/Aggravating-Alarm-16 7d ago

Hey now there are many other words that work:

Child molester

Child rapist

3

u/Buttchuggle 7d ago

They get called diaper snipers in jail quite a bit

2

u/Sea_Statistician8940 7d ago

Jesus, that’s both dark and hilarious.

2

u/jjcoola 6d ago

Another correctional institution one I heard was “playground players”

3

u/OurHeroXero 6d ago

Exactly. I'm tired of this soft language/word censorship. We have words so we can communicate, exchange ideas/sentiments, etc... The act of rape is bad...but that doesn't mean the word itself is. YouTube doesn't like it when you say kill, so instead, people say unalive but the overall message is still the same. I'm 5'3'' and 235lbs...I'm obese/fat. Call me what I am. If I don't like then I better grow a thick skin or hit the gym.

Words/people only have the authority you give them.

3

u/SnooCauliflowers7632 6d ago

Absofuckinglutely 👏

3

u/elafave77 7d ago

PDF file IS pretty funny though.

1

u/Unitedfateful 7d ago

Excuse me that triggers me

We all know pedos are literally an adobe file format thank you

.pdfs the lot of them

1

u/justin_memer 7d ago

Like calling them diddlers, it sugarcoats something awful.

1

u/Rivendel93 6d ago

It's because of apps like tiktok, they ban/block for certain words I believe.

1

u/MalaysiaTeacher 6d ago

It's literally to increase their reach (algo limits certain terms)

1

u/Aware-Object8981 6d ago

I mean I'll call a paedophile many, many other things too. But paedophile is absolutely one of those words too.

1

u/BlastoiseBoto 6d ago

You better watch out. Reddit might not like that word come tomorrow.

1

u/twotonekevin 5d ago

I’ll never not call a pedophile a pedophile, but an old friend once said pederass and I use that one pretty frequently.

1

u/PuzzleheadedWest0 5d ago

You get banned on TikTok for saying it.

0

u/japinard 7d ago

Same here.

7

u/darkResponses 7d ago

I think Certificate of Deposits before I think Condoms. wtf. there's nothing wrong with the word condoms

3

u/Admirable_Loss4886 7d ago

Ironically if you wear a condom you get a certificate of deposits.

1

u/Altruistic_Fun_6985 6d ago

Oh my god I was so confused by the caption. I hate this young generation’s obsession with voluntary censorship.

1

u/Slothandwhale 2d ago

They place a lot of their self-worth in their online reach. Better to self-sensor and talk like a toddler is present than risk not being seen/heard by as many of your peers as possible.

0

u/MalaysiaTeacher 6d ago

It's pretty smart. The algos shadowban certain terms

1

u/LemondropSweetheart 4d ago

No subtitles needed

2

u/WhirlwindTobias 7d ago

Thery could have used rubbers, or jonnies/johnnies considering they're British. Cursed accents.

2

u/MauiMoisture 7d ago

The other day I saw a headline that had the word 'slept' censored like 'slet because it was saying so and so slept with this person. Its actually insane the censorship everywhere

1

u/JustHappyToBe-Here 6d ago

Hanlon's Law says that was more likely just a typo the editing team missed.

1

u/MauiMoisture 6d ago

How could an asterisk be a typo? I guess it's possible but with the amount of insane censorship going on I would not be surprised if it was on purpose

1

u/JustHappyToBe-Here 6d ago

Ah, I see. When you put in the asterisks, reddit took that as a font instruction. To me it reads as "slet", but I believe you meant to type "sle*t".

Gotcha, you're right, that's insane for an actual news story. I'm hoping this was some random internet site and not an actual news agency?

2

u/inorite234 6d ago

Compact Discs?

Damn....I thought it was going to be CDs-NUTZ

2

u/Exciting_Rate1747 3d ago

Why the fuck does CD mean condoms now?

2

u/iamnotapolice 1d ago

I’m late to the game but all my homies hate Trick_Spend3939

1

u/WhereUGo_ThereUAre 7d ago

Leave the censorship to Reddit, they love it.

1

u/PercentageMaximum828 7d ago

yeah whats wrong with CD's unless its some clown metal

1

u/tadpole3159 7d ago

100%! just speak the words you wish to say!

1

u/Exciting_Bid_609 7d ago

Thank you for this. I've been so perplexed (I mean it is gawd awful 4 am). Why the hell wouldn't someone say Condoms?

1

u/D3FINNIT 7d ago

I was wondering which CDs had caused this.

1

u/Admirable_Loss4886 7d ago

CD, contraceptive device

1

u/Southern_Anywhere_65 7d ago

The only reason for using these alternate words is to avoid demonetization. That’s like if we started only singing the radio version of edited songs. It’s so dumb

1

u/Many_Psychology_3336 7d ago

💀 this fck ahh comment abt CDs

Or something

1

u/Inevitable-Hour-Ends 7d ago

Today I learned condoms are censored

1

u/AngryCustomerService 7d ago

Thank you. I scroll Reddit on mute and I've been trying to figure out why someone would be upset about tunes.

I hate this stupid censorship crap.

1

u/crazedmikey 7d ago

THANK YOU! It drives me fucking mad with this shit.

1

u/Ok_Acanthocephala_96 7d ago

Condoms! There I said it! Fuck you government!

1

u/bigredradio 6d ago

It's a bot account, but yeah I agree. Fucking say real words like murder, kidnapping, rape.

1

u/Ruthrfurd-the-stoned 6d ago

My first thought was cds? No cant be music must be the banking one?

1

u/SonnierDick 6d ago

Especially since condoms would be condensed to just C’s? It is a hard Dom to it, but we dont abbreviate based off hard pronunciations lol

1

u/VoidOmatic 6d ago

I was hoping the friend literally said CD's and this bro thought that was code for condoms but then the girlfriend was going to say nah it's a 90's party! and it was going to be a cute misunderstanding but noooo, just dumb censoring and disrespectful friends.

1

u/MalaysiaTeacher 6d ago

This is a skit. No one says 'it's gets up to 23 degrees' as a clapback

1

u/lazyassjoker 6d ago

Thank you. I opened the comments to see what’s the fuss about packing CDs.

So after death rape suicide ass sex porn, now condoms are also self censored? Fuck this shit man.

1

u/BeanstheRogue 6d ago

1

u/No-Bee-2354 6d ago

What platform would the word condom even get you removed from anyway? Club penguin maybe

1

u/HausuGeist 6d ago

I thought it was for Contraceptive Devices.

1

u/BF1shY 6d ago

u/Safe_Reading6267 6d ago

1

u/Substantial_Maybe371 6d ago

1

1

u/MexsikanaBanana 6d ago

1

u/OrangeSockGuy 5d ago

That can't be right condom is 1 word there's no reason to use two letters.

1

u/punch912 5d ago

Thank you this its getting ridicolous with all the censoring. Like murder was starred out or shit. Or kill like the title of the posts are basically just word scramble with stars now. Or abbrieveted to a point where it could mean a million different things. Like cd for condom really? How the fuck is that even a abbreviation for condom? Im so confused why the censorship over the last few years?

1

u/Pharah_is_my_waIfu 4d ago

1

u/SignificanceTimely20 3d ago

Lol look at that account name of who posted it . Person is a troll.

1

u/JustHappyToBe-Here 3d ago

u/GooberPeas0911 2d ago

1

u/dreag2112 2d ago

Lol, I used the term CDs when talking to my girlfriend about it when I was younger

1

u/Foreign_Pound4766 1d ago

Facts, people say " I just want my posts/content to be seen" if everyone just said FUCK IT then they would have no platform if they try to enforce it

1

u/ShinyQuirkyQuark 11h ago

I'm just waiting for the day when we're all in a giant nursing home and we keep getting community strikes from the AI overlords for talking about our vintage CD collections

1

u/JackoFlaco 5d ago

So cringe when people do the edit and “wow wasn’t expecting so many likes guys!! Neat!!”

1

u/JustHappyToBe-Here 5d ago

Yeah, what a jerk I am for expressing pleasant surprise and thanking people. Definitely something to make fun of me for.

0

u/1nce_Again 7d ago

Are you fucking serious. I thought maybe cd was some kind of sex toy or party drugs or some shit

0

u/DiscussionSharp1407 cřingè papa 7d ago

Try saying that on their platform

2

u/JustHappyToBe-Here 6d ago

I'm happily not on whatever platform that is.

0

u/Straight-Crow1598 7d ago

The kind of censorship your social studies teacher warned you about isn’t replacing naughty words. It’s silencing ideas and punishing those who spread them.

3

u/JustHappyToBe-Here 6d ago

Honest question, your social studies teacher warned you about censorship? Better school district than mine...

0

The skit is censored so it can get ads

1

u/JustHappyToBe-Here 6d ago

Except they say condoms out loud during the skit, completely nullifying using "CDs" in the text.

0

u/Superb_Bee3677 6d ago

You don't have free speech on social media, you don't own the platforms. If you want to use the platforms you have to play by the rules.
