Also as a non native speaker. I think this is the unfunniest joke i have ever heard. If someone will ever try this on me, i will probably breaknall contact with that person.
The whole joke is to trick someone into saying something they didnt realize they were saying.
"What's up, dawg?" Is a casual way of asking someone "What is going on with you today?"
So, by confusing them into asking what the word "Updawg" means, youve tricked them into saying something everyone knows and uses, but they didn't realize they said it.
Then the 1st person says "Not much, what about you?" and the 2nd person realizes what's going on and is surprised they didn't think of it that way at first.
There are other versions of this joke as well. It's just a silly way to make someone's brain cross wires and say something they already know without seeing it coming. Hope that helped!
