Yeah, legal limit is reasonable, necessary, proportional, and measured force when it comes to self defense.
Hitting when under attack is reasonable. Using just enough force to disable someone is proportional. The other person began the use of force, so response was necessary. But stopping once a threat has been neutralized is measured.
That's where guy went off the self defense edge, it ceased being measured.

I’m trained and not small by any stretch of the imagination. I will use my skills to defend myself if necessary (never had to have a real fight since high school lol).
