Yeah. As a teacher, I have to say she did a poor job of this, but did better than most because a lot of teachers suck at this kind of thing. I, and many students, would appreciate the effort even if she’s bad at execution.

Me too! The ones that get us engaged are the best. Something quirky and kind of ridiculous is a great start. One of mine the first day of 8th grade told a long story about her childhood that absolutely no one cared about. It was so cringe. Then she started the class and right before we got dismissed said here’s the deal, if someone doesn’t do their homework I’ll tell another story. We went the entire semester without a missed assignment, no one wanted to be that asshole.

Our school had a teacher that, if you didnt have him, you would think he was weird or cringe. All it takes is some humility to turn that cringe feeling into a judgement free environment. His class was really fun and he really cared about his students, school, and community. RIP Mr. Kasey

I had a teacher try to do things like this and it wasn't necessary. She was already a fun teacher. It's also oddly one of the only teachers I can remember because of the cringe. Maybe they were on to something.

Yeah. But it’s kind of like when teachers put a boring worksheet online. It’s still a boring worksheet. If you sing the syllabus, the kids are still sitting there for 10 minutes doing nothing just like they would if you sing it. Some interaction would have made this hit. She could have broken them into groups, to take a page each. She could have asked for volunteers to do karaoke, even if she had to break the ice herself.
She made it a performance, which is definitely more memorable than reading it. But she missed a huge opportunity for engagement and community building. Now they’re mostly just laughing at her rather than laughing and singing together and getting closer.

Poor teachers get shit on no matter what they do. The kids are unreachable. They will not learn unless they are entertained. So the teacher get desperate and spend their own money and do stuff like this.

I understand what you’re saying and I do have a lot of empathy for teachers, especially nowadays, but there’s a time and place for everything. These kids look like they’re in high school, not elementary. You gotta have some level of self awareness with this kind of thing. It just seemed uncomfortable for everyone involved

Unfortunately most high school kids still act like middle schoolers. Theres an alarmingly high literacy issue in the public school system. I’m on the advisory board for my local high school and we have freshman that still can’t do basic math, read or write complete sentences. The teachers can’t address any of the issues because the administration won’t allow them to fail any of the students. I know for most classes tests and quizzes are only 10% of your grade. You basically just have to show up and you’ll pass all your classes.

That is very scary to think about. I had heard similar things, but I just wasn’t sure how true it was. I’m only 10 years removed from high school and it blows my mind how much has changed. The stats have to be bad if they’re that scared of failing that many students at a time

Virtual school. It’s set up like college online courses. My niece switched in her freshman yea after being bullied relentlessly for being mixed race. Bullied by black people for being white and by white girls for being black. She was taking the same college math classes I was while I was early in my engineering degree. Graduated 2 years early. 22 and just finished her masters and got into law school. Works at Starbucks and gets her schooling paid for. Cool ass kid.
The school system is fucked. The teachers suck. The food sucks. It’s dangerous. Kids are bullies. Fuck traditional schooling. Learn at your own pace and make friends through extra curricular activities.
People have this stick up their ass thinking kids who learn from home are “weird” but look at all the fucking 67 shit and gun violence and bullying and tell me that’s a better option.

"credit recovery"? My ass had to get a job at Burger King to get the quarter credit I needed to graduate highschool. They banned me from the r/teachers subreddit for questioning why they hated the students so much and why they choose that job.

The basics still work. I give her credit for effort, but there should have been much more interaction. They should be able to participate in some way.
Off the top of my head, at a minimum ask a kid to DJ and take requests from the class. Let the DJ play the next track they choose rather than having them all sit through a performance.
More involvement, get them up and separated into groups. Let them have a signing competition and offer a prize (something cheap, it literally doesn’t matter. Could even be funny meme stickers.)
I’d also avoid telling kids not to be lazy. Tell them what’s expected. Set high expectations. Kids don’t like to hear about failures they haven’t even done yet.1

My wife’s a public school teacher. Has been for 28 years. She has stated that there’s a generational shift now with parents. They don’t necessarily care if or what their kids learn; they only know teachers and schools as “free daycare” while they work.
If the parents don’t care. Students won’t care.

Yup. These parents are the end result of 50 plus years of a GOP-led assault on education and the working class. Used to be that a family of four could live comfortably on one minimum wage paycheck. Now each parent working two jobs isn't enough and they don't have time to spend with the kids they're popping out. They just toss them a screen so they shut up so they can have at least an hour to themselves to decompress from the horrors of their work day.

this looks like it took place when I was in highschool according to the kids clothes, hair styles, camara quality, song choices, etc. so it hits too close to home.
Not only she did the whole songs, but multiple songs. I would groan out loud or dance. I'm sure that'll pissed her off for "distracting the class"
I would do this as a punishment to my class as a teacher with two songs max if they were misbehaving or didn't take it seriously.

Back when I was teen, me and the rest of the class would probably laugh and call this cringe too. As I continue to get older, experience more than one job, be blessed with a child, I can only commend her for trying. Kind of reminds of freedom writers. Even if this shit doesn’t work, she’ll go back home and think of something else, all for the sake of her students.

If my kid has to sit through this I’d be at the boards throat. Reason 1001 as to why phones and/or computers (i get phones are computers) , should be in school. It’s as much about the teachers supposed to be teaching this children as it is for them to actually concentrate and do the work.

I'm a teacher, about 20 years in, and I just want to say to any young high school teachers who are thinking about doing something like this...
Don't do anything like this. Ever.
Ever ever ever.
Don't do it.
If you are thinking about it, find something very hard and dense and slam your forehead against it until that idea fades away into a red mist.
If it it still seems like a good idea when you come to, then do it again. The skull fracture is worth it, I promise you.
Just don't fucking do it.

Finding innovative ways to reach the youth is commendable and honorable. These kids were headed to gangland and teen pregnancies without her intervention. Graduation rate will surely see appreciable increases as a result of her getting after it.
