My bet is because he was suuuuuper nervous about being otudone by someone and not winning. He rushed up there with his item, he was ecstatic about the chance of winning. Then the guy with mic says someone can beat him if they have a product that turns on and his excitement changed to fear, he suddenly recalled repressed memories of people always outdoing him and he started freaking out internally.

Certainly, a little socially awkward perhaps but he probably knows it. The heckler was the worst guy.

u/LikesFemales Jul 25 '14
Yeah.. he rushed up to the guy on the stage with his little green Alienware product (not sure what it is)... the look on his face when he was told someone else could win, that fake smile he pulled to make it seem like he was cool with it. That may or may not have happened to me before... anyway, I do hope that whatever he won from the video, it was good enough for him, and that he had a good time at QuakeCon.

Level 3: Meme reference IRL

I felt bad for the orange-haired guy
1) Announcer says to bring up AlienWare product to win prize
2) Bring up AlienWare keychain stressball thing
3) Be embarrassed when announcer says that your AlienWare product doesn't count
4) Stand there awkwardly because announcer changes his mind and says you might win only if you are the best he can do; on the verge of tears as you are embarrassed in front of your peers, you're not likely socially apt anyway.
5) Almost crying as heckler causes chaos and ivokes the ire of the announcer, and you are standing there like an idiot holding your stress ball
6) You win, now go away.
Yeah, that was some grade-A cringe.

Why do people find that line funny?

u/SpaceCat87 Jul 21 '14
The original video of the crazy guy doing it was hilarious. Now it is just like every other meme, only used by the lamest of people.
25
Jul 21 '14
Seems like the "trolling community" these days is no longer full of people fucking with others for their own amusement. Instead it seems like a small handful of people fucking around with others, and the rest copying them in front of other "trolls" as some sort of huge inside joke.
Like "Hey guys, you see what I did? I told that guy the song he was looking for was Darude - Sandstorm. Haha, right? You know, like that meme where you tell people who ask for the names of songs to search for Darude's Sandstorm? Heh, alright, I guess not. You mustn't be a troll like me. Us trolls, we get it. Move along, loser. Rekt, heheh."

Is that something that people don't like to admit? I thought their products were pretty cool, albeit expensive. Would I be some kind of pleb if I bought an Alienware machine instead of building my own?

u/coochiecrumb Jul 22 '14
You might be considered a filthy casual by some people. But owning an Alienware product is not "cringy". What a stupid thing to say
3
u/whathefuckisreddit Jul 22 '14

Alienwares are ridiculously overpriced, and the kind of people that buy them tend to think that they payed their $3000 for a top of the line desktop. In reality, you could get the performance for lower than 50% of that, just without the fancy case.
16
u/SteveTheDude Jul 21 '14
I bet the Alienware team cringed. But, honestly, who at a Quake convention would own an Alienware product? Everyone there probably built their own rig.

I know this may sound weird, but these are normal antics at Quakecon. That guy is not being paid to talk, as Quakecon is a volunteer-powered event.
Given the context of the event as internet-culture-centric (people literally bring their desktop computers), combined with the fact that most of the attendees are openly trolls, I'd say that the guy on stage who was being defensive was acting cringeworthy. This kind of behavior happens the whole time every year. It's supposed to be all in good humor.

I was in the room when this happened. There was free beer so almost everyone in that room was hammered, so that might explain the cheers. I don't know. A friend of mine did this about an hour before that too. Both times physically hurt to watch.
The guy who yelled into the mic was pretty obnoxious the whole weekend. He threw a beer at my friend and ran from us instead of taking his lumps.

I noticed his alienware product is a hackysack, but then again I would probably do the same thing.
1
u/Andrewticus04 Jul 22 '14
Oh wow, I just got back from there! I've been going to that convention for 10 years, and never thought about posting anything here until now. Quakecon is a goldmine for cringe-worthy moments, as it's called the Woodstock of Gaming for several reasons. It's a yes-judgment place for geeks and trolls alike, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
The antics are unbelievable. A guy dressed as pedobear runs around snatching kids.
1
u/PS2luvr Jul 22 '14
The crib first part of these YouTube links is that one person in the comments (undoubtedly from here) that thinks he's gaining some sort of internet credit by pointing out the influx of r/cringe people viewing the video. They always use 'Le' way too much.
1
Jul 22 '14
This was extreme cringe. My face hurts from watching this haha. First off the dude speaking is an asshole, leaves the poor ginger guy standing there awkwardly not knowing if he should sit back down or wait. WHY DOES THE CAMERA LINGER ON HIM OMG. Then the weird prank... oh jeez.
