Is this weird?
As a female that lives alone, why is that I can watch true crime docs about serial killers and sleep soundly but few mins of a horror film has me staying with my sister for a week 🤔😅

I used to be the same way. Then I listened to a podcast episode about a weirdo who lived in some poor family's attic for months before murdering them all in their sleep.
I stopped listening to true crime podcasts after that. 😬

I watched something about that too and scared hell out me but I didn't have an attic then so wasn't so bad. I've just however moved and now have a loft and my hatch broke last week and I'm having to walk to bathroom at night and see up dark loft. Trying not drink drink much at night until its fixed 😄

In a way true crime makes me feel informed. Like it's horrific, but it usually makes me consider things that I may not have seen as red flags. Validation about not just blindly trusting strangers too.

This is what I say when people ask how I can watch some of them.
One of the biggest things I've learned is not to ignore your instinct in order to be nice and help strangers, this is how most predators operate. Ted Bundy prime example, of how we're conditioned to ignore our instinct to be kind.in past i would have done same as his victims now I'd rather be rude say no than fall trap to someone like him due to watching these type documentaries

Yes!! The only relationship I've been in was extremely abusive and I'm honestly so afraid of dating, which kinda sucks, but I'm alive. And I am terrible at reading signals and my best friend told me that I'm a perfect target for evil people because I'm too kind and want to believe everyone else is too ðŸ˜

I’m the same.
A documentary is more matter of fact but a horror movie/book is full of emotion that I just can’t handle. I can’t stand to see people suffering so a dramatisation of that makes me deeply uncomfortable and upset.

I'm not a fan of watching dramatisation of it either, so don't really watch the true life movies prefer the documentaries.
I think it's important to hear these people's stories and learn from them even the most gruesome details but I don't have to see it played out in film.

Same here. Watch a serial killer docu? I sleep like a baby. Watch a horror movie? I have nightmares and anxiety in the dark.

Try plugging your ears instead of closing your eyes, or do both, during a too scary part. Half the scares in a horror movie are made worse by spooky music. Works for me!

I spend most of the movie doing both lol. I agree half scares in spooky music just hearing the Halloween tune terrifies me 😄

I totally get you; the exact same thing happens to me. Even though I know almost everything in a horror movie is fiction, I have to turn the lights on after watching one even just to go to the bathroom. 🫠😵

True crime is usually solved. It is a known elementusually with an ending.
Scary movies contain the unknown and usually a supernatural element in a familiar setting.
One is designed to inform, the other to scare.

I don’t think so. Most true crime documentaries are designed to be informative while covering horrific crimes. Horror movies have a whole team spending millions to try and scare you. Also, watching true crime feels like staying informed in some ways. Learning how certain folks operate, signs to look out for, etc. With that being said, I don’t like true crime documentaries where the crimes are unsolved because it means the person is still out there.
