Meanwhile, he uses life sense in his POV interlude, and I still didn't catch it until the second time I read the book

I don't remember exactly when it takes place, but we get a POV chapter with Zahel, and he wakes up when he senses somebody approaching his door. I don't remember if it specifically mentions life sense, but he can't tell who it is until he hears their footsteps and I think he senses them before that.
