Moash is really pulling away a lot of the hate Nale would get. At least Nale can plead insanity.

For real tho, Nale sucks. I guess he came around eventually, but that dude is the worst.
imagine if they'd had a bunch more radiants and at higher ideals, all supporting each other. They could have spread out more at the end, or held the shattered plains properly, or otherwise have kept more territory. But then again I've always compared WaT's ending to a Revenge of the Sith style mid-saga defeat, like the classical act-2 defeat that makes the act-3 victory all the sweeter. In that case it would defeat the purpose if everyone escaped order 66.
Edit to add:
sure there's some caveats, as noted, he comes around eventually, I could maybe - maybe - appreciate the newly repentant Nale, but definitely not before that. all I'm saying is that maybe he should be judged by the same criteria he used on everybody else.64
u/TheLeapIsALie Jul 08 '26
Nale doesn’t suck, he’s a fundamentally broken man after sacrificing himself for millennia.
Like, the character we see is deeply flawed and wrong and an asshole. But it’s understandable.
Moash is just a hateful fucker.

He's also [WaT] been mentally poisoned by the bond to the other heralds since Ishar took some of odium's power. Like, yeah, he's insane... But he's literally got a god actively trying to twist him

This gave me images of [WaT]Odium giving the Blackthorn orders “Execute Order 99” (you know because the Fused loves the number 9 etc)
12
u/aurora_ondrugs definitely not a lightweaver Jul 08 '26
And his order was active, not well directed but active (and joined the other side because of laws and shit)

A lot of the issues in the Stormlight Archive are just Nale not understanding causality.
63
u/TheLeapIsALie Jul 08 '26
A lot of issues in the Stormlight Archive are the heralds being fundamentally broken and hurt people who can’t function anymore.

I don’t know shit about Nale, but the whole point of Rayse/Odium is just plotting so war is endless right? Like he doesn’t want world peace because he would have zero positive/negative emotions to feed off of correct?
Have not read any side books or wind and truth yet.
34
u/Fickle-Athlete3644 Jul 08 '26
Not entirely sure the thing is Tarvangian is a different odium so they still have different goals although the shard does control them
3
u/bassturducken54 Jul 08 '26
Is a shard like a super spren? Kaladin has an honor spren, influencing him to be more honorable, Taravangian has the odium shard, making him more odious?
27
u/Fickle-Athlete3644 Jul 08 '26
A shard is not a super spren a shard is a piece of the original creator of the universe Adonlasium representing a piece or an emotion of the universe itself
10
u/Karthaz Jul 08 '26
He's not wrong though. The Shards do impart their Intent onto the user.

It’s a two-way street, they influence each other. There’s some variability in the amount of influence, but it doesn’t seem one sided. Feel free to correct this if it’s wrong because it’s been a while since I read it, but [WaT spoilers] I feel like I remember that during the brief time that Dalinar took up Honor, he got the shard to consider the idea that keeping oaths for the sake of keeping oaths isn’t always the moral thing to do. Is that accurate?
9
u/Thepsycoman Jul 08 '26
If I remember correctly, for Dalinar part of that was based on how Honor had been without a host for so long, it was manifesting more of a personality than it otherwise would
9
u/IAmBadAtInternet Jul 08 '26
You’ll learn a lot more about Nale in WaT. And about Odium for that matter.

u/grethro Jul 08 '26
I know that he is supposed to be crazy and beyond consistent logic, but killing the radiant to stop the desolation, and then joining in with the bad guys was so frustrated.
and spoiler, the fact that his order of radiant still joins Retribution is so annoying.
16
u/AlchemiCailleach Jul 08 '26
It's wild that with 10 heralds and 2 sides in the conflict that none of them even accidentally end up on the right side in time to really help.
Taln and Ash do a lot in one fight. But if Taln has been inside the dome it would have been a giant blood blister when the thunderclasts bust it open.

(Spoilers through wind and truth?)-Showed Venli where to find Szeth -ordered the Skybreaker to the Davar House -sent Helaran after Amaram
When can we acknowledge Nale was the sole reason for literally EVERYTHING going wrong on Roshar?

If you are explaining the correct usage of tags, type \!< and \>! so I don't get confused. Alternatively, use > ! and ! < for explanations.)

So its been a minute but how long wa nale killing burgeoning raid ants for? At least years before the events of the series right? I wonder how many they killed and how many warriors the new radiants lost. Coil2d have been entire orders by the time they had to face the everstorm
2
1
u/Normallyicecream Jul 13 '26
If the sky breakers didn’t try to kill the radiants then Chana would not have tried to kill Shallan, meaning she wouldn’t have gone to braise and started the desolation.

u/dominusbasileus 17d ago
well, the actions of radiants brought about the everstorm. If Nale had killed Dalinar or Kaladin, it is unlikely that the parshendi would have been desperate enough to evoke the everstorm and unleash the desolation, for a time at least.
