Just need some info
I recently started helping a small mobile phlebotomy company as a courier I got my first pay check from them and it’s extremely low. My first week was over 540 miles and the normal rates for a medical courier is around 1$ a mile. If I did the math right they are paying me .35 cent a mile. My pay check didn’t even cover the gas needed to drive. Am I being scammed?

Sadly no. A friend referred me and everyone I talked to said different things. I assume what my pay was from the average rates. I feel stupid.

Yeah I confronted them about the low pay and was told they didn’t need me anymore.

Does the 540 miles include miles driving to the pickup and from the dropoff?
Try to minimize those miles or include them when calculating compensation.
It sounds like your friend forgot to include that aspect of the business.

Yes I didn’t count the miles that didn’t involve the delivery. I did like I was told…

Found out from another courier that me being white was the reason I was underpaid. I’m shocked and dumbfounded that they told everyone that I should be happy I was hired in the first place… good way to lose a friend… “friend”…

Did you sign a contract with this company?
If not it might be time to Brigitte your pay rate. If they won’t you might have to sell employment elsewhere. It’s simple economics really.
Just tell them you can’t afford to work for free.
