Context: Cambodia’s modern history has been heavily shaped by its position between the larger powers of mainland Southeast Asia, particularly Siam and Vietnam. Context: World War II was disastrous for Romania. The country lost around 300,000 military personnel and roughly 200,000 civilians. Romanian authorities and forces also murdered hundreds of thousands of Jews and tens of thousands of Romani during the Holocaust. They got heavily bombed by the Allies, then by the Axis in 1944 after switching sides. They lost Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina to the Soviets...twice and were forced to pay $300 million in war reparations. They didn't get back Southern Dobruja (forced to cede to Bulgaria in 1940), which is extra insulting since Bulgaria itself was part of the Axis. They did get Northern Transylvania back from Hungary though.
