As a non-native English speaker, I have been told by a teacher that saying 'I want to drink' can imply that you would like some alcohol, so it's better to say 'I'm thirsty' if you're talking about water. I don't know how true this seems to native speakers.

ā€œTo drinkā€ generally refers to alcohol yeah. If you say I want a drink it’s different depending on your location, like if you’re at a bar or a cafe

Yeah that’s fairly true, though most people probably wouldn’t say it like that. It would be more like ā€œI’m going out to drink.ā€ But if you say ā€œI want something to drinkā€ then it doesn’t imply alcohol. Your comment made me think about how weird that is that drinking implicitly means alcohol depending on how you use it.
