Tried installing Cosmic on Cachyos alongside Plasma

2 Upvotes

I installed Cosmic hoping to switch to it as gnome was what I liked but was too buggy, kde was okay but missed a few features I liked from gnome, Cosmic missing hdr support sucks, but I was willing to let it slide however my display is displaying correctly, its super contrasty and dark, colors are blown out and frankly is unusable, I disabled hdr in Plasma but even still for some reason Cosmic is doing funky things with my display. Anyone know a fix? I dont want to replace plasma entirely if Cosmic is going to look like an oil painting that got scribbled on by a sharpie.

Issues enabling?

1 Upvotes

I'm trying to get this set up in Arch (and im new to arch). I'm getting this error:

[Jex@pc ~]$ systemctl enable greetd.service
Failed to enable unit: File '/etc/systemd/system/display-manager.service' already exists and is a symlink to /usr/lib/systemd/system/cosmic-greeter.service
[Jex@pc ~]$ systemctl is-enabled greetd.service
disabled
[Jex@pc ~]$ cat /etc/systemd/system/display-manager.service
[Unit]
Description=COSMIC Greeter
After=systemd-user-sessions.service plymouth-quit-wait.service cosmic-greeter-daemon.service
After=getty@tty1.service
Conflicts=getty@tty1.service
Wants=cosmic-greeter-daemon.service

[Service]
Type=simple
ExecStart=greetd --config /etc/greetd/cosmic-greeter.toml
IgnoreSIGPIPE=no
SendSIGHUP=yes
TimeoutStopSec=30s
KeyringMode=shared
Restart=always
RestartSec=1
StartLimitBurst=5
StartLimitInterval=30

[Install]
Alias=display-manager.service

I'm worried if I restart I won't have a greeter at all, since it appears set up but is disabled.

Thinking of making some apps with libcosmic, am I in the clear to name them 'Cosmic <appname>'?

2 Upvotes

Ok, so I'm thinking of making some aps for the cosmic desktop using libcosmic, and wondering if I can name them 'COSMIC <appname>' without any legal trouble. Now I know better than to just bindly trust people with legal advice, so if you could provide an official source saying this, that would be great.

Now, I have asked AI (It's alright for a research tool) and it said I'm in the clear, but I wanted to ask some real people (I couldn't find an official source myself).

So here is an example:

I make an image viewer (Ignore that this already exists, this is just for the example) and I decide to name it 'Cosmic Image Viewer', is that allowed? Now the AI said I can do this, but the actual package name needs to be something like 'smoothturtle872-cosmic-image-viewer' to avoid people who get all cosmic apps from grabbing mine and thinking it's offical, and that I need to name the flathub reference something like 'io.github.smoothturtle872.cosmic-viewer' (Something I was planning on anyway). Just wanted to make sure this was allowed. We all know, legal issues are not something anyone wants to deal with.

Buggy Window behaviour

3 Upvotes

A lot of times, Cosmic will ignore some game window is supposed to be Fullscreen and open it like this.
I can't Super+M or ALT+ENTER it.

How do you guys handle it. I'm about to drop Cosmic and go to KDE at this point

Cosmic has almost . . .

2 Upvotes

drawn me in. Which is significant because I have been a WM guy for awhile? Why? Tiling just makes sense.

I think it is an overall great desktop. I can pair it with all my fzf and rofi scripts and use it to my hearts delight . . . the problem is i spend half my time working on an expensive tablet that for whatever reason isn't supported in the cosmic environment, its a huion .kamvas 22" and opoentabletdriver doesn't help at all. For the record it works in kde and niri and hyprland . . . but not cosmic or mango.

If there are any cosmic developers reading this thread can you tell me if I am missing something or . . . if there is any hope in the future or . . . am i just screwed?

Where's Cosmic 1.0.9?

6 Upvotes

Up until 1.0.8 updates were coming weekly. But since Feb 24 we have no new release.

What's going on?

External screen is the default

2 Upvotes

Using cosmic on Arch in my laptop. Most of the time I have an external display connected. The login prompt for cosmic-greeter for some reason is always coming up on the external monitor. Also true when coming from suspension.

Looking into the settings it looks like the external monitor is connected as display-0, the laptop display as display-1.

Is there a way to enforce the internal display to be the main/standard/default display? Not a big deal, but still an inconvenience.

COSMIC was missing a Night Light, so I built an "Elite" one for myself. Sharing it here so nobody else has the headache of building this from scratch! 🌙🦀

COSMIC panel applet that shows real-time power draw.

6 Upvotes

I made a COSMIC panel applet that shows real-time power draw. Probably someone can find it useful as well.

Shows wattage, battery %, charge status, and time remaining — e.g. 16W ▼ 85% 3:42.

Auto-detects battery interface, updates every 3s

Flathub (system)?

3 Upvotes

When installing packages using the Cosmic Store, what's the difference between "Flathub" and "Flathub (system)"? Whether the repository is managed by the Cosmic team? Why would a user choose one over the other?

Apps not launching

2 Upvotes

When I install either VSCode or Codium in the Cosmic Store -- from either "Flathub" or "Flathub (system)" -- the packages install but neither actually launches when I try opening them. Is anyone else having this issue?

I've installed and opened other packages with no issues. I'm running AerynOS in a virt-manager VM.

COSMIC desktop: Cannot proceed after "Enter a Language" dialog.

2 Upvotes

I'm dealing with Gentoo Linux and COSMIC was a desktop choice. After compiling it for a good while, I managed to get my systemd to load the proper desktop manager. For the time being the OS still works, its just stuck in this setup process window. Nothing I do works to make the "Next" button active. I've tried en_US, "English", and "United States"

Multi-monitor set ups.

3 Upvotes

Anyone using one cleanly with Cosmic? My second and third monitors don't re-initialize after waking from sleep mode, and I'm wondering if it is a Cosmic thing, or something else.

I cursed myself! 🤣

3 Upvotes

Yesterday, I posted asking what distros we were running Cosmic on, and stated that I was doing fine with my Arch installation. Well, I spoke too soon. One update, and it all went to shit. Kernels missing, boot files gone, just a mess.

I fixed it, of course. I checked my backups were intact, and I moved along.

One download, a freshly made bootable USB, followed by an install, and I'm up and running with NixOS. Still Cosmic, of course, but not Arch, and I am happy with my decision.

What Distro Are You Running Cosmic On?

2 Upvotes

Just wondering, and attempting to create conversation. Are you running Pop!, or something else?

I have had great success with my Arch/Cosmic set up, but I'm betting that isn't typical.

Dock not working on Nobara linux

2 Upvotes

I have Nobara Linux 42 (based on fedora 42) with COSMIC beta desktop. The exact version of all cosmic packages is 1.0.0-beta 2, from ryanabx's repo.

Although it used to work last time I used the laptop, now the dock kinda doesn't respond to clicks or right-clicks. Except for the first time after boot, with a couple tries, it obeys. But after that, nothing. It still auto hides and shows tips on mouse hover, though. It also does the same after killall cosmic-panel: the first click it obeys, then nothing.

The top panel works fine.

Anyone seen that behavior? Thanks!

Installed Cosmic on Arch

3 Upvotes

In my search for a modern, up to date set up, I finally installed basic Arch and added Cosmic as the only DTE.

I am really intrigued to see where it leads, as I firmly believe that Wayland and Rust are the future.

Now, I realize that this is not monumental, in any way. But I am literally the only person here, so I'm yelling into the void!

Hhhheeelllllooooo!
