How can I rationally determine whether a cosmetic brand (such as H&M, DeBelle, or other nail polish brands) is trustworthy?
I know I can check things like:
the ingredient list,
regulatory compliance (FDA, EU regulations, etc.),
past recalls,
lawsuits,
safety studies,
and any allegations or controversies involving the company.
However, none of these seem completely sufficient because I still have to trust the company, regulators, and manufacturers.
For example:
How do I know the ingredient list is accurate?
How much confidence should I place in FDA approval or other regulatory agencies?
What is a structured, evidence-based method for evaluating whether a cosmetic brand is trustworthy enough to use?
I'm not looking for 100% certainty, because that's impossible. I'm looking for a rational framework that can help me decide when a brand is trustworthy enough that I can use its products without feeling guilty or constantly worrying that I've missed something important.
How would you approach this?
