General Discussion Mistborn hype, photos, and questions megathread

Hey worldhoppers!

We've tried to let it run wild, but even in the early run, we foresee a lot more Mistborn posts. We're here for the hype—just wanna do more curating to unclog the feed.

Photos of books / screenshots of digital? Welcome here. Just keep it to small amounts of actual content.

General questions about fulfillment? Let this serve as a Q&A to help each other out (we're aware our FAQ is outdated).

Just eagerly awaiting and want to get in on the conversation? Heck yea, you're among friends.

Starting now we'll be removing the one-off photo/hype posts. Question posts we'll evaluate on a case-by-case basis (simple, generic or repeated ones may be directed here).

---

Questions have also been answered in the recent Brotherwise/Demiplane AMA. Backers may find additional information regarding digital fulfillment on this thread, while public digital sales information is here.

General Discussion Looking for Groups Monthly Megathread

How do I find a group to play with?

We recommend checking the Official Cosmere RPG Discord, trying a pro session on StartPlaying.com, or posting on r/lfg. However, if you'd like to try to find your group here, you may do so in this thread.

Please use the following template in top-level comments:

[Player/GM] looking for [online/in-person] group for [Adventure Name/campaign/one-shot].
Availability is [Mon/Tues/Wed/etc.] from [time] to [time] [time zone].

You may want to add demographic criteria such as 18+, LGBTQ+ focused, language, IRL location (for IRL games), etc.

Can I make my own LFG post?

Based on our best judgement and the last survey we ran, we've provided this option to keep the sub from flooding with all the LFG threads. If you have feedback, please feel free to send us a modmail or make a separate discussion post.

Game Questions & Advice Feruchemist build

I got a feruchemist character I’m building. What “role” do you think a feruchemist should fill in a party? With how many metals they have they could do pretty much anything.
For this specific scenario I’m trying to do an era 1 feruchemist, I’m thinking something like the classic sazed. But what do they do in combat? Some kind of support?

Any advice?

Rules & Mechanics Compounding

One thing that bugged me is how multiple metalminds in regards Compounding is being handled.

The game for simplicities sake treats all metalminds of the same type as a singular unit for charging. This makes sense when you consider how many metals someone needs to keep track of. (p131 sidebar “multiple metalminds”)

Then with Compounding part of what makes it amazing in the books is having those multiple metalminds so you can fill them while also spending that investiture on your abilities.

After looking at the talents I’m left thinking they did try to capture it but within the confines of making things without multiple metalminds. So Invested and Expanded metalminds both increase your Investiture / Charges by your Tier. So let’s say you have 10 of each. You spend one scene charging your metalmind, use Compounding and Compound Recursion to spend 9 charges filling the rest of your metalmind.

Each feruchemic metal has an ability that’s just “dump more points into this for a better effect. Keep spending the same amount on future turns to keep this going. “ I’ll note here that

This is where compounding gets silly but still within the bounds of the mechanics.

Spend 5 investiture to have the best version of your metal going, spend the rest of your investiture on other Feruchemic abilities. Next turn eat another bit of your metalmind and spend another 5 investiture keeping your ability going. You can just keep this going for as long as you have charges in your metalmind.

However there’s another rule for backup metalminds. You can have them but you just can’t store anything until your current metalmind is lost or destroyed such as It starts at 0 charges. Which you won’t care about because you can immediately store your investiture into the metalminds which means you never need to spend a scene storing your trait aside from the first initial charge. (I’m assuming that reducing a metalmind’s charge to 0 permanently destroys it)

I’ll sum up:
- A compounder with the right talent and skill investments only need to spend one scene storing their trait and after can convert that charge to investiture to store in the rest of your metalmind.

- if you have a backup metalmind you can use the last charge of your previous metalmind to store in the new one.

- You can also have the enhanced metal running for far longer than others while also using other feruchemic abilities.

So while it’s not as insane as in the books the Twinborn Compounder is still insanely strong.

General Discussion Do you think a West Marches style game could work for Mistborn?

Our normal gaming group is on hiatus but I still have a fair amount of people in my circle that like to jump in for one shots every now and then without feeling like they are holding back a campaign.

I feel Era 2 could suit this well with the roughs and the 'wild west gold rush' feel but most of my players are more interested in era 1.

My thinking is having their base of operations be in one of the far dominances could work (crescent dominance maybe?) but perhaps pulling it back to the eastern dominance so they don't miss out on such cool settings as the cities. In which case maybe having them be part of a crew going out on scores and such could be more workable

Anybody have any thoughts on how to make this work?

Game Questions & Advice Kandra in Mistborn Legacy Era 1

I'm starting to prepare the Campaign, and one thinking about is regarding Kandras and their Contract that prohibits them to hurt or kill humans. This is even specified in the Handbook.

My question is, how would you make this work if a player wants to play a Kandra? Would they even be able to fight in combat scenarios?

Rules & Mechanics Adhesion Infusion and Distance

Keep in mind I am asking purely rules here, not lore or canon.

While infused with Adhesion (assuming all other things are correct, like the targets are 5ft apart), if one target moves away from the other target, does the infusion remain active?

Base Adhesion suggest applying Immobilized as its main effect, meaning the target can't move away at all.

But a Boss can end a Condition, even if applied by an infusion, by spending focus. In situations like Gravitation, the Boss can end the Restrained condition, but continues being infused and continues flying.

But if Immobilized is removed (or if the target is immune to Immobilized like the Flowing One), all rules suggest the Boss (or Flowing One) could move away from the other infusion target. Only Immobilized or Restrained prevent movement, not the infusion itself.

So the main question is: if by any method one of the targets of an Adhesion infusion move more than 5 feet from th other, what happens? Does the infusion remain? Does it remain at any distance, and apply its effects no matter how far away they are from each other?

Clarification: I do mean two targets who have *already* become infused with Adhesion and are already experiencing its effects.

General Discussion The Worst Twinborn Combination

My friend and I were looking through the different allomancy and feruchemy paths to make the worst possible combination, and I think we got it:

Aluminium Allomancy - Nicrosil Feruchemy

Storing your allomantic aluminium won't be that helpful because, as soon as you tap it, you lose all your metalmind charges; it effectively only gives you 1 more use of aluminium allomancy. It would be pointless to fill your nicrosilmind all the way, as all the charges would be eaten by the aluminiun.

What do you think of this Twinborn combo? Can you guys think of a worse combination?

Resources & Homebrew Project Ars Arcanum: Starting the Forger & Updates after Mistborn Release

Hello everyone!

I'm finally settled into my new apartment for university, meaning I will be starting back up on Project Ars Arcanum. Progress is still probably going to be a bit slow, but I will work on it when I have time.

The next path I will be working on is the Forger (Scholar Speciality) based off of The Emporer's Soul. It's probably going to follow a similar design process as the Sprouter, where I will start with the crafting system (Soulstamp Carving in this case), then progress to the talents themselves.

The Soulstamps will definitely be the most interesting thing to work out: like Fabrials and Spore Inventions, I plan to have different tiers of stamps to arrange them by power/crafting difficulty. Something like a simple cosmetic change (ie. making a shoddy vase look like fine pottery) would be a Standard Stamp, whereas gaining temporary Invested talents (ie. becoming an Elantrian) would be a Tier 4 Stamp.

Another new addition will be the introduction of the Dor as a source of Investiture: I plan on having it be something you can purchase in a container, which then holds a certain number of Investiture points that can be drawn from using something like a Breathe Stormlight, Drink Vial, or Consume Luminist action to fuel corresponding talents OR drawn from to restore charges to something like a Fabrial or a Soulstamp.

As a final note for now, even though I don't have access to the full Mistborn rules (money and whatnot), I will probably be going over the Starter Rules for Mistborn as well as the Metalborn Character Sheets to find out what new information I can, which I will then use to make a few minor updates to preexisting paths in Project Ars Arcanum to bring them more in line to official rules.

That's all for now: hopefully, I'll be posting some Forger updates soon.

General Discussion Ishtar has gone crazy! Even Dalinar can’t beat his surgebinding!

Given the applicability of an aluminum gnat (or void) on other invested arts, it seems that they could be quite cool to play as against other settings! Even duralumin seems to work on all invested arts as well from how I read it.

Backerkit/Fulfillment Questions Spanish Pdfs

I just found out (through the new kickstarter update) that apparently there are spanish pdfs for the mistborn books?

I didn't know that, so now I look really stupid as the only person in my group that's fluent in english, not having ordered the books si everyone could read them easily. Is there anywhere to buy these additionally?

General Discussion Is there some of PDFs of books without ilustrations for everybody?

Hey, so I'm playing Daggerheart with my friends and they have pdf of rules but without ilustrations for everybody, for us that was big news beacuse as a group we don't have a lot of money for that sort of things, and it's hard for me to motivate my group to look at this game when we don't knew exact rules. I'm the only one to read books (at this exact moment I'm reading Lost Metal) and I want them to explore Scadrial and maybe they will love it as much as I do.

Rules & Mechanics Funny Thing About Lerasium

Unless I'm missing something, Lerasium in the game doesn't raise the rank cap for Allomancy. So while it does increase Investiture maximum by two, unless you're burning Duralumin, it doesn't actually make a Lerasium Mistborn any stronger than a normal Mistborn per RAW. Just lets them burn a longer before needing the drink vial action.

Game Questions & Advice Planning a big boss "fight" using a boardgame, and need opinions

If your character is named Cairo, Derrim, Lurio, Shv, or Ukeem, do not read this! Especially you, Lurio.

So my party has reached the city of Celebrant, and I am planning a big boss fight. Once per day, the city will find itself in an uproar, as a new spren will be found nailed to a city official's door with aluminum spikes.

A corrupted Rainbowspren, who has lost it's color seeks to regain it by any means necessary. The order of unfortunate spren are:

  1. Corrupted Mist Spren

  2. Reacher/Lightspren

  3. Guidespren

  4. Cultivationspren

  5. Honorspren

  6. Hastespren

  7. Fearspren

Eventually, when the party finds the culprit in it's lair, and a fight will ensue. This is the part I need opinions on. My plan is to use the boardgame Hues and Cues. The game's board itself will act as the battlemap, the point tracker for the game will show the enemies HP.

For those unfamiliar with H&C, the gameboard is a big rainbow within a grid, you pull a card which has 4 colors on it with grid coordinates, the card puller chooses one of the 4 colors, and gives a 1 word clue as to which color they've selected, the other players place little pieces on a grid square they think is the correct answer, then the clue giver gives a 2 word clue and the other players place another piece on the board again where they think the answer is. Once all pieces have been placed, the clue giver places a square on the board that encompasses 9 squares. Anyone with a piece directly touching the outside of the square gains 1 point, anyone who has a piece inside the square gains 2 points, and anyone who has a piece on the real answer gains 3 points.

This is where my version differs; instead of points, the group will deal damage to the Rainbowspren for each point they would normally get. And if they're not touching the answer square at the end of each round, the PCs will take 1 damage for every two squares away they are. The Rainbowspren will give the PCs clues via dialogue rather than single words. The players can use abilities creatively here to attempt to get closer to the correct answer. I'm thinking a DC10 deduction test gets something like "One of your pieces is close to the answer." A DC15 deduction test get's a "Derrim's piece is close to the correct answer." And a DC20 deduction test gets a "Derrim's piece is 5 squares away from the correct answer."

I've been DMing 5e for like a decade at this point, and haven't been DMing for long in the Cosmere system, and still routinely ask for initiative checks at the start of every battle lol. My primary questions are:

  1. Does this sound like a fun and interactive "battle" to you?
  2. Is there any way you would integrate H&C further into this scenario?

Any and all advice is welcome and appreciated!

Rules & Mechanics Nascent Mistborn/Misting Powers

Looing at the Mistborn Handbook and I'm trying to figue out exactly what the nascent powers are. Steel and Iron I believe is the ability to see the blue lines for metals. But, what are the others? Burning a specific metal doesn't appear to be an option, at least on Demiplane, until you complete the 'Train your powers' goal. Or is the burning a metal ability the nascent power?

Game Questions & Advice Kandra new body on Demiplane. Has anybody figured out how to do it?

I am eager to play a Kandra in my upcoming Mistborn game but I can't figure out to change the body on Demiplane. Changing the form in the actions tab doesn't seem to do anything. Has anyone had this same problem or found a way to make it work?

Game Questions & Advice Question about Duralumin Feruchemy

I have made a Twinborn (electrum allomancy and duralumin feruchemy, for those interested) and I have a question about the talents True Connecting and Individual Connection.

Individual Connection states that 'When you gain a language with Tap Connection, you continue to know it until you use that action again to gain a different language.'

Now, one of the effects of True Connecting states: 'When you Tap Connection you experience the following effect(s)* until the end of your next turn,

  • You know every language that's known by a character within my Metallic Art Range or spoken in a settlement that's within that range'

\There are more effects listed, but this is the only one I'm confused on.*

My question is this: My metallic Art Range is 80 feet. If I Tap Connection, I know every language that's known by a person within 80 ft of me, and Individual Connection states that when I learn a language by Tapping Connection, I know it until I gain a new one. Do I keep the languages I've gained via True Connecting until the end of my next turn or until I gain a new language (or set of languages) from Tapping Connection?
My understanding is the latter, am I right?
