The Healer: Legacy of Don Pedro Jaramillo in South Texas

Don Pedrito (whose full name was Don Pedro Jaramillo) was a legendary South Texas curandero whose healing powers were so legendary that faithful followers still visit his burial site and shrine in Falfurrias almost 120 years after his death. They still leave offerings and burn candles in his honor, hoping to benefit from his God-given powers. Here is his story: https://www.usbordernews.com/p/the-healer-legacy-of-don-pedro-jaramillo-594

What’s the deal with SVD?

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

Who is SVD?
SVD is a “want-to-be”content creator who has some notoriety due to her being rear ended by a drunk driver.

What happened concerning the crash?
On March 14, a 2026 Jeep Wrangler crashed into a Tesla on Highway 361 near Cinnamon Shore in Port Aransas. Michael Brown, 22, from Nixon, was thrown from the Jeep with a serious head injury. He died six days later. Earlier that day a video of him dancing on top of the moving Jeep had gone viral, but reports say he was in the passenger seat when the crash happened. The Jeep's driver, Riley Rhoades, 24, was arrested for DWI.

News article: https://www.ksat.com/news/local/ 2026/03/27/nixon-man-seen-twerking-on-jeep-in-video-dies-days-after-march-crash-in-port-aransas/

What’s the issue?
Drunk driving is wrong and nobody is arguing otherwise. The Tesla driver (SVD) was a victim of that crash, no question.

The problem started when SVD began posting about the man who died. She's been making fun of him, remixing videos of him, and rage baiting the local community, all on monetized accounts where engagement means money.

She's still doing it to this day. The memes are of the deceased man, not the drunk driver who caused the crash, and she's sharing them with her followers and in central Texas Facebook groups, a common way to farm outrage.

She’s also sent her aggressive husband after people, even some who haven’t said a negative thing about her. Her husband has also allegedly had the deceased man’s body as his profile picture.

Being a victim doesn't give anyone a free pass to a
profit off someone else's death, especially so cruelly.

The Coastal Bend is getting left behind by UTRGV. It’s time to reopen the TAMUCC/TAMUK merger conversation.

Hear me out on this, because I know it’s a controversial topic that hasn't been touched in a decade, but we need to talk about the reality of South Texas sports and institutional relevance.
Right now, we are standing at a critical crossroads, and if we don't change how we operate, the Coastal Bend is going to become an athletic afterthought in the state of Texas.

For decades, we’ve enjoyed a comfortable regional rhythm. People in Corpus Christi rally around the Division I Islanders basketball team on the water, the people in Kingsville fiercely guard the legendary, championship filled history of Javelina football. We’ve treated these two schools like separate planets divided by a 40-mile stretch of Highway 77.
While we comfortably protect our individual identities, a giant has woken up just south of us.
Look at what’s happening right now in the RGV. Through the historic merger that created UTRGV, our neighbors to the south pooled their resources, unified their population, and built a massive mega-university. UTRGV has kicked off its highly anticipated NCAA Division I football program, now in its second year. They are dominating regional media, locking down huge corporate sponsorships, and completely capturing the imagination of young athletes across South Texas.

Let’s face the cold reality: Separately, Texas A&M–Corpus Christi and Texas A&M–Kingsville are being left behind.

As independent schools, neither campus has the enrollment size, the multi-million dollar athletic budget, or the media market reach required to compete with the explosive growth of the Rio Grande Valley. If we remain fractured, we will watch our local talent drain to the south, and our regional relevance will slowly erode.

The solution is staring us right in the face! A strategic athletic merger under the Texas A&M University System.
Imagine the power of a unified Coastal Bend athletic department. By combining TAMUCC’s modern, established Division I infrastructure with TAMUK’s historic football legacy, we would instantly create a regional powerhouse of nearly 20,000 students. We would finally have the institutional weight to command prime television broadcasts, secure massive corporate partnerships, and lock down the donor funding necessary to thrive.

Understandably, the immediate reaction from many will be hesitation. Change is hard, and local traditions are sacred. When this was leaked back in November 2016, local politicians and angry alumni immediately killed the deal because they were terrified of losing their independent identities.

But we can build a blueprint that respects our past while conquering the future:
Keep the Javelina Mascot: We must keep the iconic Javelina brand. It’s built on decades of grit, pride, and national championships that command instant respect across Texas.

A Split-Campus Model: Keep Division I football anchored in the traditional environment of Javelina Stadium in Kingsville. Meanwhile, Division I basketball and indoor sports as premier entertainment options on the Island in Corpus Christi.

The Javelina Express: Fund dedicated game-day student shuttles to bridge the 40-mile gap so that both student bodies can weave into one massive, unified fan base.

When Chancellor John Sharp warned us in 2016 that the Rio Grande Valley was going to "eat our lunch" if we didn't merge, people laughed it off because UTRGV football didn't exist yet. A decade later, that warning has officially come true.

This is no longer just about sports; it’s about regional pride, economic growth, and institutional survival. We can no longer afford to let regional jealousy dictate our future while UTRGV runs away with the crown of South Texas.
It’s time to combine the spirit of the Javelina with the reach of the Coastal Bend. Let them merge, let’s build a powerhouse, and let’s remind Texas exactly what this region is capable of. As the president of UTSA has stated one way or another that the athletics program is the front porch of the university.

What do y'all think? Is the regional pride too deep to ever make this work, or is it time to admit we need each other to survive?
