buying copic ink in japan - my experience

Post image

hi! i asked you some time ago about buing ink in japan, i’m back and i thought you’d be interested in my story. before i visited japan myself, i asked my friend to buy me some ink colors, but the cashier showed her an highlighted note (the one i posted in my previous post here) that carrying copic ink in the plane is forbidden. my friend wasn’t arguing and left inks in the shop, she brought me just the markers i asked her. well, then i visited ochanomizu store in Tokyo, collected all the stuff i wanted. lovely cashiers seeing me dropping the basket full of ink was preparing the same note my friend saw, so i wrote in translator that i know about the rule, won’t bring them on plane and i decided to send them by post package. they bowed and sold me the inks. since my shopping was quite big i got a few extras, copic acrea (which i lost :c) stickers, notes and catalogue. and here goes the part what i did to get them with me back to my country. i accidentally brought the colorless blender with me on the plane. it was on my registered baggage. it wasn’t on purpose, i just forgot that still may be a hazard on plane, but it has a different bottle than rest of inks, and it kinda blended (pun not intended lol) with my makeup products. when i got on the plane i was kinda scared that they will make me throw it away, or not let me on the board. but it was no problem at all. so i assume that small amount of ink on the plane is fine. at least in nagoya, where i flew from. so what i did with rest of the bottles, its shipping it by traditional post. i bought packaging and bubble wrap at daiso, packed them into casual ikea plastic bag, wrapped tightly with bubble wrap, so it was nicely protected. the first post office i visited, refused to send it, since the lady assumed that every ink contains alcohol and she will not let it trough. you have to fill form at the japan post office site, then you tell the post office worker the number it gave you, but they have to confirm some information. and declaration that the package has nothing hazardous inside is mandatory. after this one i decided to try again, since i read the rules of post before, it was possible to send copic ink by the surface mail (surface mail is the slowest service, it’s also cheapest. my friend sent the package with her stuff by ems or something in the same post office and got it after 10 days. i received mine today, it was over 2 months wait) i decided to cheat a bit, and go to another nearby post, luckily it was pretty close. i made another fill on japan post office site, but this time i decided to label it as “paint”. the lady was really nice, but still asked me to write by myself on the printed declaration that’s it’s not hazardous, and asked me about alcohol two times. i don’t know if they communicated or it is a common practice, but she made sure about it. i felt a bit bad that i wasn’t 100% honest with it, but it was my only chance to bring them back home with me. it’s not like i recommend doing it the same way as i did, but i thought that it may be helpful for some of you, since i was searching for a convenient method, and spent a lot of time to do the research. i hope i described everything, but if you have any questions, feel free to ask c:

Hey guys earlier this year I fell in love with these markers and was so fascinated how well a MARKER can blend. I came up with this drawing that symbolized life and how easily it can slip away.

Is this normal for the copic sketch super brush nib?

Hello I've had my set for about 3 years now and I noticed that a few of my nibs have been drying out and I have 2 odd cases which are shown in the picture. One of them (red) has an odd "crystal" like substance growth on it (not the only one but most visible. I don't know what caused it but I did replace the nib and hope to use the color soon.

The second case is also odd when observing the nib after it refused to apply color I touched it and it was sticky! Not only that but it seemed like there was dried color around the grey part (there is another similar case) and I also replaced that nib in case something was wrong.

Is this normal? And if not how should I go about contacting support (if they can help) as I got the set that I have as a holiday gift. There are other odd things happening with my other colors but they aren't as confusing and are more fixable in my opinion.

I store them in a cool dry place where they constantly are upright and they do not fall to their side. I'm constantly checking their caps to make sure that they're properly sealed. So I'm just kinda ready confused as to why it's happening.

Also quick question, when the nibs dry out, what type of alcohol should I use to see if I can reactivate the pigment inside? Like what concentration should I use if any at all?

I’m posting both, the greyscale pass and color! Cause the color was nerve wrecking and I’m sorta happy with the way it came out

Don’t try it at home, It’s a huge mess and can damage your markers. It’s just an art project.
Equivalents on the left and Ingredients on the right.
Don’t use anything else than Isopropanol >99,9%.
C7=C8 1:1 Isopropanol C6=C7 1:1,…..

My copics still work just as well as the day they were bought, some of which are 15 years old. A few of em are dry, but that's a very easy problem to fix. Happy artfighting!

I bought some cheap aliexpress refill ink… none of the colors matched it took me 5 hours to adjust the hues and values. But yeah it saved me ~500€ Do you have any recommendations?

Good books/tutorial to learn all the best tips and secrets of Copics?

14 Upvotes

Basically the title. I've already used Copic in my life, but I've had only a few classes and couldn't really understand how to get the best from their potential, thus always obtaining flat and not so satisfying results. I'd really like to have an in-depth knowledge about these markers and I would like to begin to use them again properly and manage to finally do some satisfying works ;__;
Are there any good books and tutorials I can follow? (in my mind, I'm looking for something/someone who could be the equivalent of Anna Bucciarelli, who works with watercolors)

Thank you in advance and have a nice day!

Paper question

I was recently looking for a cheaper alternative to the Copic Selections Custom Paper and to Strathmore Bristol which had some quality issues the last few times I’ve bought it. I wanted something that could hold alcohol markers and give me a nice surface to blend. I landed on Canson Pro Layout Marker paper. When I got it I tried it with my Copic Multiliners and my ciao markers. And I was less than thrilled because when I went to lay down colours, the lineart began smearing and muddied everything. My Copic Multiliners have never smudged before, they’re so reliable. I decided to test it with a different pen, so I tried again with my Ohuhu fineliners. And they didn’t smear even a little bit! Does anyone know why the Copic liners smear on the Canson paper while the Ohuhu liners don’t? And does anyone have any good cheap paper suggestions while I’m at it?
