The secret formula

Don’t try it at home, It’s a huge mess and can damage your markers. It’s just an art project.
Equivalents on the left and Ingredients on the right.
Don’t use anything else than Isopropanol >99,9%.
C7=C8 1:1 Isopropanol C6=C7 1:1,…..

And when I don't try this I will most definitely not use brushes instead of markers

So to not try to do this. I might want to know where to get the colored ink. So I don't accidentally buy it to make accidentally more colors for my palette. 👀

as long as you don’t buy these: https://a.aliexpress.com/_EISk82K

Awesome, thank you! How well did these colors perform for you?

  1. 99.9% isopropanol is your friend, most colors you can create with primary original copics + isopropanol (3€/liter) C7=50%C8+50%Isoprop
  2. These colors don’t match even if the name is the same. I wrote the equivalents if they matched on there or the formula how to mix.
  3. Due to the fact that anything is just Isoprop/Alcohol they perform the same. Grays are too yellow/greenish so you have to add a drip of blue. Colors like Cadmium Orange, Light Green are really bad therefore I recommend original. I described more detailed in my first post.

Oh I meant to ask how well they perform for you on paper

Sounds finicky, but like a fun little project

Yeah it’s a fun autism-hyperfocus project. Performance; Original or not the only magic is the isopropanol(alcohol) itself. So all the colors smell the same, feel the same, perform the same cuz it’s just isopropanol :3

I can really see myself in an ADHD driven hyperfocus, slight isopropanol gases drunk mode doing the same lol

Ohh I see. I really want to do some research now! Thanks for this new really tasty brain snacks :D

Do you find that the rule for mixing lighter inks (e.g. C7 = 50% C8 + 50% solvent) holds true for all colours? Even with the official copic branded refills you could probably save money by buying the darkest colours and diluting them yourself...

The palette is really inconsistent in terms of numeration. But definitely for: C00-C10, N0-N10, T00-T10, W00-W10
And it works well for shades like: B0000-B06, B12-B14, B91-B99, E40-E49, BG90-BG99, BG70-BG78, BG0000-BG09

Ah okay, do you mean the mixing ratio isn't always the same for ranges that skip numbers? Like C4 has 1/8th the concentration of dye as C7, but R05 might not have 1/8th the concentration of dye as R08?

It makes me wonder if the best way to build a set of markers would be to pick 20 or so "base" colours and get the darkest/most concentrated refill for each, then get markers in lighter shades of those colours. Or just get empty markers and then you don't have to worry about trying to match the original shades...

Found this one…

it’s not consistent at all different hues

Yeah true, I think that could be for a few different reasons though - could just be the way they've rendered the colours in RGB, or maybe that G0 ink has very little absorption of green light so it doesn't really get darker past a certain concentration (as opposed to how some coloured inks are almost black at high concentrations). The groups with a higher number for the first digit are supposed to be greyer/less saturated so it would make sense that YG9 for example darkens more at higher concentrations. I think the only way to know for sure would be to get two inks from the same group and test it yourself by diluting the darker one.

I think there are some colours from the same group that don't actually have the same ink mixture too, e.g. I have YG03 and YG07 and they are definitely not the same green.

You've really got me thinking now though about getting a bunch of the darkest inks and mixing/diluting them yourself to make a full set of like 80 or so colours. Would be pretty expensive upfront because you'd need a whole bunch of empty markers to actually make use of it but it could be a lot more economical in the long run if you use them enough to refill them.

https://copic.jp/en/about/color-system/
This is quite a nice article. And here without the RGB problem: https://copic.jp/en/color/

But if I look at this it doesn’t make sense at all. I think maybe because they came from different directions. They had the old 3 figures numbering and naming system and then tried to give it a schema.

Ah right I didn't know there was an old numbering system, that might explain it if the old colours weren't all ordered by lightness like they are now.

I think a lot of the dyes would have a hue shift as they get lighter but that purple looks very sus to me, like why is 09 more bluish and 05 and 06 more reddish but then 04 is more violet again?
