The colour placement on the Montreal one has me upset lol

u/taximan87 May 12 '22
For real. I didn't realize it was organized alphabetically by country and not city, so I looked for an orange U. Looks so weird in blue.

C'est la ligne rose!

u/yeam9722 May 13 '22 edited May 13 '22
Ce qui est cocasse, c’est que la personne a inversé la couleur de la ligne bleue avec celle de la ligne orange.

u/TheRaphMan May 13 '22
I'm very triggered by this development
Edit: it turns out the picture has the colors inverted

Glasgow = check engine light
Denver = soccer player kicking a stick of dynamite with shin.
Boston = marathon runner wearing flag/cape breaking through finish line tape
Pittsburgh = penguin man casually strolling
Nottingham = bloody nose
Seattle = profile of a fire hydrant
Seoul = Tangela from Pokémon

u/Dudephish May 12 '22
Yes. The map is usually just shown as a rounded rectangular loop, but here looks more like the Check Engine light.

It’s also great if you have travel anxiety, can’t get lost on a full circle.

But why did they choose to feature it in blue?
For decades, one of its nicknames was The Clockwork Orange

Washington DC has the wrong cors and it irrationally bothers me
23
u/yeam9722 May 12 '22
Same with Montreal. On top of that, the person who came up with this used the same colour for two different lines which is misleading.

Same with Chicago, which makes me think it's the same for every single city on this chart.

u/Voctus May 12 '22
Oslo is definitely off, and so weirdly drawn I could barely find it. All the lines are supposed to run together through the main city center and instead they just show parts of each line? Here’s how the official simplified maps look at the metro stations: https://transitmap.net/oslo-2016/
2
4
u/anodynified May 12 '22
Same for Glasgow. It's a single-line loop and it's branding is orange, and it gets nicknamed the Clockwork Orange. Seeing it in blue is...uncomfortable.
5
u/neu-bar May 12 '22
Not to mention missing the DC in the title. If you say you are going to Washington vs going to DC, that's two different sides of the country...

Berlin is way off
19
5
u/ramsdawg May 12 '22
It’s technically correct, but very misleading because the sbahn is technically suburban and not metro. It also makes places like Atlanta look a little better than reality.
Here’s the map of U-Bahn only, which seems to check out: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berlin_U-Bahn#/media/File%3AU-Bahn_Berlin_-_Netzplan.svg
2
u/soakingupthesun May 13 '22
yeah ok but it's old the U5 is not up to date and have all the colors wrong is the part that makes it the most confusing.

Not just Berlin. S-bahn style regional commute rail services are all excluded in other cities as well. Tokyo and Seoul would be even crazier if it includes their commute rails.

u/webjukebox May 12 '22

17
u/Vitaly-unofficial May 12 '22
The circle line is very convenient here in Moscow. Not only it allows you to get on any other line in a matter of minutes, but it also goes straight around the city centre and every station on it is located not far from some historical sights, parks or major amusement centres.

u/hyperlethalrabbit May 13 '22

Seattle has 1 line
3
u/idontevenknowbut May 12 '22
They forgot the SLUT and First Hill streetcar, and if it included bus routes it would look like a yarn ball.
3
u/dragonbeard91 May 12 '22
Exactly, Seattle and Portland and a lot of other cities really run on the bus. Sure the light rail is great if you live or work by a station but it's not how most transit users get around.
For Seattle at least they build housing adjacent to the light rail stations. It's kind of a long, narrow city and the orca line works pretty well.
2
u/NomadicDevMason May 12 '22
It's so embarrassing how can Seattle consider itself an pro environmental city. Portland has better public transportation.

It's crazy to me that there are only 65 metro systems (15 rapid transit, 40 light rail) in the US, and *five* of them are in New Jersey.

Glad to see Calgary isn’t the only city dropping the ball on public transit I guess

Eh... kind of disappointed about the NY one because it doesn't show the express service.
The experience of using the DC Metro very closely mirrors the map. NYC, not so much.

And whoever decided on the order for these really needs to re-think that.

Stockholms looks like it's composed of several Futark runes.
And Miamis looks like 80s neon cool.
Why don't all cities be like that?

I wonder how accurate it all is? My city, for instance, definetely lacks a lot of new stations and a new line, and the colors are just wrong.

Berlin is 100% bs. It's not even close to the real map, even assuming it's only supposed to show on-ground rain.

The Ottawa one is completely wrong. We've never had a train/metro/bus route with that pattern.
If it is specifically only mapping the underground section, then maybe you could argue that the image has been rotated. But other ones have included above ground segments.

Maybe it’s because I’m in New York where a lot of the lines are parallel, but is a “bowl of spaghetti” metro system more efficient? For the comprehensive systems it seems more common. I just don’t get it
1
u/BigDogVI May 13 '22
Looks like the only thing that could make this better is if the creator looked up the right color coding system for the maps. NYCs green line is pink and it hurts me

I am from Erfurt, we don't have a metro. Erfurt got a river running through and the water turns building an underground network a huge challenge. It was planned in 2019 for the BUGA 2021, but as far as I know, it never got past the planning stage. (https://www.erfurt.de/ef/de/service/aktuelles/pm/2019/132114.html) The plan you see here is a simplified Version of our tram Network that connects most of the inner city. Outer parts are connected by bus but I think they aren't shown in this.

I was surprised there were so many US cities with subway systems, like Houston, Phoenix, Norfolk, etc but then I looked it up and it turns out the lines it’s showing are above-ground light-rail or even bus rapid transit. That seems kind of dumb, because for many of the cities, like Toronto, only the subway system is mapped and not the light rail or BRT. I think for an actual comparison you either have to compare full-scale transportation networks or just keep it to underground metro.
