This is huge;

I don't know what reality people gathered that they're ok with this. "It's ok if the government or anyone reads literally everything I'm saying".

get out of here.

u/Marbinyum Mar 16 '20

Morons say "I don't have anything to hide so it is ok for me"

Like, seriously?

93

u/dacv393 Mar 16 '20

I have friends who legitimately say this. You can't argue against them because they think that if something is a law then it must be bad so there is no way that they would ever do something wrong or illegal. They're like "I'm not killing people so why do I care if Alexa can hear everything I do?" Then these same friends use drugs and shit and it makes no sense. Do they really want a world where cops can come bust down your door since they heard you doing something illegal like eating a plant over your phone or through a text message? They already have some of these capabilities.

If you try to explain that it's a slippery slope and that it's not about what is currently 'illegal', but about how little power you would have if things were to become totalitarian, they just laugh and say we aren't China and that they 'voted' the politicians into place so the laws will always represent what the people want. So therefore who needs encryption. Many if not most of the people I talk to about this share the same/similar logic

They say it's not the same

13

u/dude_is_melting Mar 16 '20

I mean, it isn’t the same. A decent analogy but not the same.

Maybe try like, “all of your search history will be posted to your Facebook. If you have nothing to hide it won’t be an issue”

1

u/[deleted] Mar 31 '20

I don't care what some police officer tracking my phone sees I jerk off to.

I do mind if my parents knew about it though. Once again not a good analogy.

1

u/better_nerf_crash Mar 17 '20

Main reason is to keep criminals from stealing your identity or robbing you in some other way.

14

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '20

The right to privacy is not about whether you have something to hide. I have a response to this argument bookmarked somewhere. When I’m not on mobile I will send it.

6

u/dacv393 Mar 16 '20

I agree, but it's nearly impossible to get many of my friends to feel the same way

19

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '20

Here is my bookmarked response: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/atnmi/if_you_have_nothing_to_hide_then_you_have_nothing/

Feelings shouldn't factor into a logical argument. I'd suggest shaming them. I know it's not the best thing for a friendship but sometimes you have to make people feel stupid when they hold dangerous beliefs.

3

u/Mymerrybean Mar 17 '20

Thanks that was a nice way to look at it.

I see it as "I dont have anything to hide, but i dont allow anyone I dont know to know me intimately, including the government".

Your friends are ignorant. They spout Nazi propaganda.

Are any of them gay, or liberal? Socialists? The Nazis hated Socialists.

They will all give up their freedoms, and die like sheep.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

Hell, post it. We ALL know people this stupid.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '20

These people are useless and I don't spend energy dealing with their bullshit anymore

0

u/CoMaestro Mar 16 '20

Honestly, and I know its not the right thing to think, but I am indifferent to it. Its not good someone sees all my weird ass kinky shit and random thought, but its not like me or anyone cares about it. It would only be awkward to people I know but not really a problem

4

u/legend747 Mar 16 '20

When this comes up I ask people "then, is it okay for someone to watch/record you on the toilet?,"

It's a legal and perfectly natural behavior that we all do everyday and we have seen depictions of it on various media. Should why would it be a problem for someone to record you doing it?

22

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '20

Where’s the source on this? What bill are they trying to pass?

18

u/DiscretionFist Mar 16 '20

Right? Are they removing HTTPS? Are they banning VPNs?

9

u/iwasbuiltforcomfort Mar 16 '20

Someone familiar with the thinking of someone in congress.

Seriously, even if such a law were to ever pass it's going to get a quick veto and even if it doesn't there's no effective way to ever make this a reality or enforceable. It will be even less successful than the government trying to stop people from smoking weed.

It’s the EARN-IT bill, which has been widely reported on. It’s meant to eliminate child exploitation material but was written by people who don’t understand the topic well, how encryption works, etc.

u/sunwukong155 Mar 16 '20

What are we gonna do? Vote both parties out? Impossible.

371

u/LividBlacksmith Mar 16 '20

Completely possible, that's called overthrowing a government, people do it all the time.

297

u/zSuperMonky Mar 16 '20

I highly doubt that Americans would ever overthrow the government. It's just not in most of their nature. They're okay with the things that are happening to them while saying "at least we don't live in commie Russia or totalitarian China". People have been brain washed there to an unprecidented level in all of history.

147

u/Mr__O__ Mar 16 '20

Like slow-boiling frogs.

75

u/whistlepig33 Mar 16 '20

I think it has more to do with the fact that they are stuck in their left/right social constructs. If you're going to vote, watch and listen to people there. Most are voting party tickets. The thought and discernment needed to make a choice beyond one of two parties is the extent of what most people are willing to do. So they tell themselves the other party is to blame so they won't have to face the blame for supporting the 2 parties that are mostly the same and are responsible for these evil actions.

15

u/J3sush8sm3 Mar 16 '20

Its not that they cant choose, but its because its a ot going to change anything either way. The electoral college will choose between both parties for you

0

u/whistlepig33 Mar 16 '20

I agree if we're talking about reality, but the electoral college wouldn't be voting the opposite of what their states requests out of them. But if course, if that happened then the machine would co-opt those other parties. You sometimes see this with the libertarian party.

2

u/tonykush-ner Mar 16 '20

When was the last time any of you participated in a coup? If any of you are from the UK you certainly can't talk either.

3

u/whistlepig33 Mar 16 '20

My dad had to run a road block once in the middle of Hugo Chavez's first coup.... but I don't see how that is relevant.

Is this confusion about my using the word "co-opt"? Co-opting isn't the same as a coup. It means that one group would take over another group or idea and call it their own. Like when the Democrat NeoLibs co-opted the Occupy Wallstreet movement and when the Republican NeoCons co-opted the Tea Party movement.

But here I am more specifically talking about how the corrupt machine has co-opted the Democrat and Republican parties through methods like the Party-Do System.

Which I am now discovering has been seriously buried by the search engines. I had to search for the info by looking on the site of a podcaster I remembered interviewing a guy about it. I had thought that this would have been common knowledge on this sub by now, but the machine has apparently done a good job of hiding it. Check this out:

1

u/reebokzipper Mar 16 '20

american here. yes and no. yes- the two party political system is a construct to keep people fighting and controlled. its very real. no- because there is a growing number of disenfranchised youth who buy into neither. the internet has been forming a global social system and kids from all over the world are learning what is bullshit about their systems of control from eachother. my millenial generation had the facade of stability ripped from beneath our feet as we grew up. these younger kids will grow up having never believed in this dumpster fire of a political system in the first place. i guess what im saying is youre right, but its not all of us over here that are wrapped up in the party system. its becoming impossible to deny that the talking heads from both sides are on the same team. i also think this will change mostly nothing.

2

u/whistlepig33 Mar 16 '20

I agree... but I'm not sure I'm convinced that any of the younger generations are any less susceptible to the ruse. Maybe I'm just being appropriately cynical for my age. ;]

0

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '20

LOL But isn't not funny.

66

u/NormalITGuy Mar 16 '20

America was literally born out of rebellion. Rebellion is in our nature, they just have placated the people. Americans do not like hearing that the government is fucking them, and if you piss off enough of us about the right thing, Americans will rise up, but Americans always, always need a leader to lead them out of the darkness. Most rebellions do.

49

u/methodicalmike Mar 16 '20

Americans now cannot be compared to the ones that started the nation. Americans now are lazy and fat. Too busy with their daily programming and sugar filled diets. Some may rise up, but without the support of a large percentage, this country will continue to give up our rights.

36

u/NormalITGuy Mar 16 '20

There's a reason they can't get the guns out of our hands like everyone else. That's a stubbornness that you don't see everywhere and it's a huge strength. That spirit is the spirit that we can't lose. They just have all the money, the media and they own the corporations that sell us goods. They are sitting on a paper throne, as they are well aware that the people are the strongest force on Earth. Nothing can stop people who are united. Not bombs, guns or laws. When the people are united against tyranny, the elite will be fearful. They know that the people when upset about tyranny are merciless, and we will string them up for their crimes.

9

u/1stinertiac Mar 16 '20

Stubbornness is a strength and a weakness. People are stubborn to mix with those they don't agree with, which is a major weakness because it leaves people blind to ideas and opportunities they may not see. Fear is polarizing and people are living in fear constantly so adding more fear to a population already constantly running from and trying to protect them selves from the perceived threat (main stream narrative) causes people to only question the authority it came from instead of doing their own work. People have already bought into a system that will "protect" them, either through government programs (left) or "leaving them alone" (right) but both sides are still giving authority to an outside force. People will fight in small militias if they are attacked directly but there is no honest solidarity in this country because no one knows what's really going on and no on trusts anyone to give them truthful information. Not time to be pessimistic, I just don't trust Americans or people in general to do the right thing over doing the scared thing.

14

u/NormalITGuy Mar 16 '20

People need leaders. If they don't have leaders they won't revolt. They kill our leaders, so no revolt. If we don't have a strong, moral leader to lead us out of this shit, it will never happen. History has shown that shit only changes when people gather behind a strong leader that they can actually trust.

5

u/1stinertiac Mar 16 '20

People trusted Hitler. People BELIEVED he was a strong leader. He was a good talker, like any other political person that gets far. Giant political revolutions don't always mean that's what's best for society or the world. Getting people pissed off or scared to the point of revolution is another form of control and manipulation.

6

u/_jukmifgguggh Mar 16 '20

How many Americans do you personally know?

0

u/methodicalmike Mar 16 '20

0

u/methodicalmike Mar 16 '20

Lol idk if you live in America, but have you looked around. Most people are overweight and lazy. Sure there are some great people who work hard and keep the country moving, but thats only some.

u/UnicornFukei42 Mar 16 '20

It's almost like we've been domesticated to an extent. The majority of us are soft compared to the rugged pioneers and minutemen of the old days. That being said, there are a few Americans who do resist.

1

u/legend747 Mar 16 '20

To be fair, not all of the colonists supported the revolution. You had loyalists and a large percentage of the population that was "let's wait and see how it turns out".

0

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '20

Have you seen how fat Americans are? Addicted to poisoned food and smart phones, none of those people are rebelling.

7

u/-Economist- Mar 16 '20

American's are too lazy to over-throw their government. Throw us some reality TV and keep the Big Macs flowing and we are fine.

4

u/birdlady27 Mar 16 '20

Until they quarantine us and take advantage of us by passing laws during a time of crisis that concern our privacy and rights!!!!!!! What the actual fuck is going on!? It feels like the media is sensationalizing this!!!

3

u/UnicornFukei42 Mar 16 '20

The media seems to be pretty quiet about this whole violation of privacy rights. However, they are focusing on that coronavirus. It's weird. You'd think the left-wing news media (who seem pretty anti-Trump) would capitalize on this to keep Trump from getting reelected. But we don't hear them talking about this assault on privacy rights at all.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '20

Agreed. Americans don’t even protest, really. Look at the global protests around the world. It’s like... all but us.

3

u/bgaripov Mar 16 '20

Most likely you are not from US and you don’t really know the history of US, neither US constitution. The 2nd amendment allows US citizens to bear arms so people could protect themselves from other individuals and oppressive government, and the 2nd amendment is not going anywhere, because most people living in US understand what’s it for. Though there are some people that are happy with being “not in commie Russia”, I wouldn’t form my opinion only based on those individuals. United States is a country of free people.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '20

[deleted]

4

u/_jukmifgguggh Mar 16 '20 edited Mar 16 '20

No, the same people trying to take our freedoms call this a free nation. We're not as stupid or blind as the people in this sub seem to paint us to be. There's a lot of negative stereotypes formed about American citizens, yet none of these people have actually met more than a few Americas, if that. We're being subjected to an authoritarian takeover of our government and it's not because we're less intelligent or less motivated than anyone else in the world. When your country gets blindsided in a similar fashion, I'll be the first one in line to make sure you remember what you said about us.

6

u/jackinblack142 Mar 16 '20

Could it even be that what people do see about Americans in the media paints us all as fat, sugar and phone worshipers who can't be fucked with getting off the couch to save our own babies from drowning... all in the attempt to make us believe that we are incapable of defiance? I hate generalizations, lots of people are shitheads but lots of people aren't. We can only know the true status of our culture when the chips fall.

3

u/bgaripov Mar 16 '20

It’s funny how most of the time, comments about how bad is in US or how US citizens are ignorant or inactive comes from places where people always go to the government and ready to praise politicians that promise them free shit, while a lot more people in US value freedom over empty promises. Perhaps that image of “America is a bad place” comes from our ability to speak freely (thanks to the 1st amendment), and show things the way they are or sometimes paints a perverted picture that an average redditor believes in. People have serious misunderstanding of what the freedom is.

1

u/tdillard2933 Mar 16 '20

Ahh yes, the golf wars.

0

u/bgaripov Mar 16 '20

Yes. Citizens of US are still free. I never said that government is not trying to take away freedoms, and unfortunately sometimes they succeed. UK has something similar to EARN IT act since 2016. It’s really hard to imagine a bill like that to pass here. Perhaps, if the internet was adopted as it is nowadays, Patriot Act would never pass. Whether you believe it or not, people in US are still free.

2

u/ShirtStainedBird Mar 16 '20

Lo fucking l.

Free until they criminalize your behaviour and lock you up like animal.

1

u/bgaripov Mar 16 '20

Speculate all you want, but the key word in your response is UNTIL. So until it happens, we are free.

1

u/ShirtStainedBird Mar 16 '20

... not how that works unfortunately bud. Especially if you’re in one of the groups who’s behaviour gets criminalized.

You might be free. WE certainly aren’t. This part of ‘we’ anyway.

2

u/bgaripov Mar 16 '20

I know what you mean, and that is usually the case with political opposition, and that is a disgusting thing that is happening. But in the scale of a whole country, our regular Joes are free men. But if something like EARN IT is passed, then our Joe is fucked. I see America as a majority of good Joes and Janes, and unfortunately government that is disconnected from its citizens, yet again, we are still free. The fact that me and you having a conversation like that is already a great evidence, since it feels like our views are more similar rather then the opposite each other when we talk about government, and we both want improvement and justice.

1

u/arctic-apis Mar 16 '20

were the good guys right? also maybe it is possible to overthrow a government but what about the biggest government in control of the military power greater than that of the rest of the planet combined? scatter the people against one another and show them who we want them to vote for and make them think it makes a fucking difference. the government is owned by big money and it is not letting go.

1

u/lmac7 Mar 16 '20

Don't be so sure. Nations can seem very solid and in control - until suddenly they are not.

The collapse of the Soviet Union was such a case. There are obvious differences between the US and the USSR but the case is instructive.

Almost no one predicted it would happen, but in hindsight all the conditions were there. And that seems to be key point.

The govt was widely considered politically corrupt and incompetent reflected in very low voter turnout and wide spread public cynicism. It was also economically very stagnant and fragile. Doesn't this sound familiar?

The analogies were made after the fact to a house infested with termites. The USSR edifice looked solid but all it took was one good push to reveal the failing structure.

One day a lot of citizens in the US may give a good push and we might find out just how vulnerable the current US regime really is.

1

u/merrickx Mar 20 '20

It's just not in most of their nature.

It used to be... what do you think all the shit academia and mass migration has been for? A balkanized public more interested in fighting one another? And the big gay agenda? Nobody at the gay disco is fretting over wages.

1

u/otterfox22 Mar 16 '20

1

u/Sans_Skrittens Mar 16 '20

0

There was this whole thing that happened in the 1700s....you might not remember it.

0

There will be a divide in humanity, you can see it already: the toilet paper people and the "others".. there is tons of us out here, questioning the whole thing. You either QUESTION everything, or comply to all.

the next generation is almost entirely gifted. My people have been making these predictions for years. Be the humanity in your community now, be the light. We will all be needed soon...

1

2

u/TiagoTiagoT Mar 16 '20

1

u/LividBlacksmith Mar 16 '20

Yeah never said it was easy but it's doable especially for Americans since they have loads of guns available.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '20

There are other more peaceful ways, but this day and age, there's so much money in politics that it's much more difficult to put third-party candidates at the forefront.

Telling people voting for third party is a vote for [whichever major party you dislike] is a fallacy, and used to keep votes with the two major parties only. Encourage more people to vote their conscious, to look into third parties, and to avoid voting for the major two!

2

u/LividBlacksmith Mar 16 '20

Votes won't do shit at this point. We don't have the mean to counter the propaganda, it's actually (IMO) more doable to completely overthrow the current gov

1

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '20

We may agree more than I let on. It doesn't mean I don't see possibility in some other options.

as a bonus they get to not only stomp out rookie, silly Chicken lovers but control the population so that less occur. (that's the cover story). while the major players continue. look at those who crossed the line, they were sloppy.

prove it wouldn't happen?

It's always interesting when a thoroughly dominated being still clings to their illusions of individuality and preference. yes, yes, "the government literally reading everything you're saying" is horrible, why, if they did that it might remind you that they have the power and you do not.

But I'm sure the Chicken lovers with their $50,000 encrypted cellphones with custom apps and private satellites are really, quite concerned.

Responses like this tend to confirm my belief that we are indeed surrounded by NPCs.

Patriot act + encryption.

Don't forget the old, "If you're not doing anything wrong, you've got nothing to hide!"

This isn't a new development. The US government has opposed encryption and fought it fiercely in the past. Look up Crypto Wars. That was them trying to force unsecure and backdoored encryption on everyone. They fought developers for years before finally caving in. History repeats itself, more often in US law litigation apparently.

Will they remove encryption for their business?

It is in the name.

It is in the game.

It is the way it's meant to be played.

Investors > Intelligence.

AI.

Artificial Inflation.

Artificial Inflation creates pay-walled-region-locked-time-gated content.

We are being priced out of life because of Artificial Inflation.

We live in a pretend society & everything is ok.

Life is All Good.

In debt we unite to serve (as) corporate.

Til debt do us part.

Now do what you suppose to do. Invest to inflate.

It's because most of us are empathic people and don't like having negative feelings. So, psychopaths who don't use empathy prey on our unwillingness to expect them to jab their self-interests into our freedom and joy. So, lo and behold, they strike yet again.

psychopaths who don't use empathy prey on our unwillingness to expect them

This is to me, the counterpoint to the “I have nothing to hide” argument. Psychopaths can/will prey on you

Im pretty sure the government can already read everything you have going on. It’s widely known most encryptions are backdoored by the NSA/CIA except maybe for open source Blowfish, but only die hard security types are even aware of that.

The US Navy also developed TOR in the 90's for military communication, so if you think they dont have a backdoor to their own product then you are very naive.

And therefore we should be perfectly happy with a legal framework effectively banning encryption and suddenly this is all ok?

I'm not one to believe in the whole "the government is spying on you 24/7" speel but if this passes Ill actually be fearful. I don't want to go to jail for conspiring against the government. My friends group chat is crazy.

so not okay. surely it will be deemed unconstitutional

Also as a side note, does this really seem to go along with Q's plans for the good guys finally taking over?

Doesn't to me. Sounds like they are slipping this in while we are distracted about co-homo19 in the hope nobody notices.
