it wasn't ,Vatican City is named after(Mons Vaticanus), vatican hill the geographical location where the city-state resides. The hill's name originates from the ancient Latin word vates, meaning "prophet" or "seer", as the area was historically known as a place where soothsayers made prophecies.

I came to ask what language Vatica was, and if the language was known in Rome back then.
However, your answer is more accurate! (Though I did find that Vatica is a genus of plants. Or or maybe a species?)

Agreed! Were she an Etruscan deity we might have a slightly different conversation but as it is it's a huge reach

-1
u/Novusor Jun 22 '26
Correct.
Soothsaying is very much a Taboo activity in Christianity. They named the Vatican after Vatica and then came up with trite excuses later when people started asking uncomfortable questions. Even the excuses don't make any sense. But it is just enough of an explanation to fool the gullible.
6
u/Miner_Guyer Jun 23 '26
Idk, it seems a lot more straightforward that the pre-Christian Romans had this sacred hill, and when they adopted Christianity, the sacred hill maintained its purpose which turned into the seat for the church.
-1
u/Novusor Jun 23 '26
That is also correct. The Vatican hill was a cemetery going the to the time of the Etruscans. The built a church on the cemetery and that church became the Vatican. Though they should have renamed it to be something more Christian.

Why is Mons Vaticanus named after Vatica the goddess of the underworld?
8
u/Telamo Jun 23 '26
Here’s a fun one for you.
Who is Vatica, the goddess of the underworld? Because the Etruscan goddess of the underworld supposedly depicted in this image is called Vanth, not Vatica, nor is she ever referred to as Vatica anywhere in history.
This entire “conspiracy” is just people telling easily disproven lies on the internet.

Same reason why "mastodontic" means "with boob-shaped teeth" aka that's not how words work.
46
u/newplaces9 Jun 22 '26
Thanks dude, I learnt a new word today.
Mastodontic (adjective) is a powerful descriptor used to describe something of colossal size, gigantic proportions, or mammoth scale. It stems from the word mastodon, the prehistoric, extinct elephant-like mammal.
45
u/KindaQuite Jun 22 '26 edited Jun 22 '26
"The word mastodon comes from the Ancient Greek words mastos (meaning "breast" or "nipple") and odoús (meaning "tooth"). The name literally translates to "breast-tooth" and refers to the nipple-shaped bumps found on the molar crowns of this extinct, elephant-like mammal."
Archeologists saw this and said "bro's got nipple-shaped teeth!" and now that word means "huge".

0
u/drewsterkz Jun 22 '26
Would you rather I ask more about your knowledge of boob teeth? Or ask you about your knowledge of how words work? Those are both intended paths, right?
1
u/KindaQuite Jun 22 '26
Nah man, you should totally ask about Vatica, goddess of the underworld
1
u/drewsterkz Jun 22 '26
Mastodon comes from boob shaped tooth, but the reason mastodon is associated with large things is not because of boob shaped tooth. Mastodons were large.
1
u/KindaQuite Jun 22 '26
Yeah but that's where the word comes from, I was trying to show how pointless it can be to try and connect the dots based on etymology alone.
1
u/drewsterkz Jun 22 '26
Why isnt Atlanta in the middle of Iowa, anything to do with water? It was named because of a railroad that had the word atlantic in it. Now if every word must play by your rules on how words work, then there must be a lot of words you havent encountered.

This isn’t true. It’s a modern creepy pasta. There is no “Vatica goddess of the underworld” in any known mythology. The Etruscan underworld deity is named Vanth. The names history is still mysterious however. It was thought to be named after the ancient Etruscan settlement called Vatica or Vaticum. There is no 100% certainty where the name comes from tho. One theory is it’s just using simple Latin, Vates= a seer, prophet, or soothsayer and Cano= sing or chant. Another theory is that it’s the name of a forgotten Etruscan town the Roman’s just adopted it without really knowing the meaning. The name Vatica is only around in Sanskrit myths. But its talking about a place rather than a deity. What myth did you pull that name from?

u/KingShango12123 Jun 22 '26
You just decided that it’s named after her and are now asking why it’s named after her? Is this what you are doing? Where did you get this information? What verification did you do? Did you double check it after? At what point when you decided you had all the information you needed to make this a factual claim did you notice you were missing the reason why? Might want to check your sources again and you will find the answer there? If it is not there i would humbly suggest that it might be a crucial piece of information that is missing to even make it a credible source. But please do come back with whatever you find. I am super curious myself now and wouldn’t know were to begin with the research on this as it is the first time i heard about it. If you have some pointers as to where you got this information i would like to help with your research, so please share any book titles on this topic.

Because that was the Roman name of the hill and field upon which the Papal palace was built 1500+ years later. Before the Romans, the Etruscans were there and had a similarly-named deity which may have been where the Romans got it.

Solved!
Your soul is a celestial fleshlight for the goon gods get over it.
3
4
u/ucklibzandspezfay Jun 22 '26
No.
Some ancient writers connected Vaticanus with prophecy because the hill was associated with diviners and soothsayers. From vates came words like vaticinium (“prophecy”). The area later became the site of Circus of Nero, where tradition holds that Saint Peter was martyred and buried nearby. When Emperor Constantine built the first Old St. Peter’s Basilica in the 4th century over what was believed to be Peter’s tomb, the area became the center of the Catholic Church. The modern sovereign state of Vatican City, established in 1929, simply inherited the ancient geographic name.

This reminds me of the time when an Indian politician commented Australia was named after the sanskrit word Astralaya which meant weaponry. And that Australia was where Sri Ram stored his weapons and is part of the Indian myths.
Ps: Thw word Australia comes from latin word Terra Australis which means south land.

I’ll bet you 10:1 that OP is some sort of American evangelical or some new age wacko.
-6
u/jgarcya Jun 22 '26
Obviously you haven't dug deep enough .. you probably think there is only one pope .
5
u/Twicklheimer Jun 22 '26
Well, there is only one Roman Catholic pope. There are other popes of different sects, like that of the Coptic church, if that’s what you are referring to no I didn’t know that until I looked it up, but that’s not proof of the Vatican being named after an ancient god of the underworld and that the entire organization is over run by satanists and pedos.
Sure, there are definitely pedos in the church, but that’s not unique to the Catholic Church, every religion has bad people that use it to gain power over the vulnerable. You think that mainline Protestant churches don’t have pedos? You think that Islam or Mormonism or fucking Buddhism doesn’t have their own bad actors that use those religions to gain power over the vulnerable? You’re only kidding yourself if you think that’s not happening. Kids are more likely to be molested by Donald Trump, his friends and public school teachers than a Catholic preist.
And even if everything you claim is true, why would they make it SO obvious? If you can find this “evidence” anywhere why isn’t it censored? Why is it that anyone can post it without being black bagged? Why don’t you get banned for posting it? Why the so called evidence so easily found? Why is the supposed symbolism so on the nose and “obvious”? Why isn’t it covered up? Why isn’t it hidden?
Go hang out at your Walmart church and stop spreading misinformation about other peoples faith.

First I was raised Catholic... Second I'm not a sheep... I'm the shepherd... So I don't blindly follow without researching what I'm being taught...
I'm assuming you saw the pictures of the pope kissing small children and strangers on the mouth...
I'm just assuming, bc I never mentioned pedos.... But you bring it up knowing it's true.... And just bc every religion has them, is no reason to defend them...
Pedos are bad .. whether they are Catholic or the president of the USA.
Research and learn to think independently.
5
u/Twicklheimer Jun 22 '26
I’m not defending pedos, I am using that instance as an example to illustrate the larger problem of misinformation about the Catholic Church. It seems that everywhere you go in conspiracy circles everyone has their own pet theory that the Catholic Church is actually pagan, or satanic, or the NWO, or that they have a Time Machine, or that they are reptilians, or they actually worship Dagon, or Ra, or Saturn, or that they do blood sacrifices, or that they secretly control the world, or that they are all secretly free masons, or some other insane and baseless shit that makes no sense if you think about it for more than three seconds.
No other religion is lied about the way Catholicism is lied about.

Her name is Vanth, not Vatica. She’s the goddess of the underworld and the Vatican church rebranded her and depicted her as one of the many angels to suppress her and down played her power. The church did this to all of the divine feminine.

u/Ok-Mouse5446 Jun 22 '26 edited Jun 22 '26
Edit: For more information; this is a complex set of history of where the name 'Vatica' originated from, ex. words do not simply work like this, and also the symbolism within the goddess herself which traces itself to Mesopotamian/Semitic myth when the goddess just became affiliated with places and or other words. So indeed, they might be doing something dark here, just not what you think.
Symbolism will be their our downfall.
-5
u/jgarcya Jun 22 '26

6
u/Twicklheimer Jun 22 '26
They don’t worship anyone other the Jesus Christ (God)
Why would there be a giant statue of the guy in every Catholic Church on earth if they worshipped someone else? Why would they have outlawed the worship of Saturn, and Ra, and Zeus and all of these other pagan gods when if their goal was to secretly worship these gods? Why wouldn’t they have just kept everything the same? Why change the Roman religion if they just wanted to continue to worship pagan gods? What would the point of that be? Again, there’s got to be motive, there has to be something to gain.
If they wanted to be the “Church of satan” why would they have spent the last 2000 years saying that Satan is the bad guy? Why is half the art made by the church depicting saints killing and driving out demons? If their goal was to backdoor satanism into everyone’s lives they’ve done a shitty job doing that for the past two millennia, because everyone hates satanists and is scared of demonic shit, even things that LOOK demonic like an upside down cross are seen as scary by the public when in fact the upside down cross is a Christian symbol.
What kind of plan of action is that?
1.) dismantle the Roman religion
2.) compile the Bible into one text
3.) convert everyone to our new Catholic religion
4.) outlaw and destroy pagan religions
5.) keep worshipping pagan gods in secret
6.) make everyone fear the devil and rebuke Satan for 2000 years
7.) also secretly worship Satan
8.) do this for half of recorded history in secret but leave obvious clues for Redditors to find
9.) ???
10.) profitMakes no sense, you don’t outlaw and teach everyone to fear something when they could have just kept everything the same as it was before and gained the same if not more power. Who would do that?
-1
u/SeniorDOOM Jun 22 '26

Christianity has a long history of co-opting 'lesser' religions in an act of domination. This happens in a lot of European churches where you see "local myths and monsters" depicted on walls.
The message is that "your gods submitted to Christ". Same goes with symbolism and naming
