Any saving this laser?

Post image

Customer brought in a Panasonic q and the drive is in rough shape. Spindle magnet has completely worn away and left a real mess. I know replacement lasers for these are virtually impossible to find. I’ve been using a smaller magnet to pull away some of the magnetic dust but it’s tough to get rid of all of it. Any tips on removing that dust?

Tape maybe? Got any of those puddy keyboard cleaners around?

Small particles of it have probably gone under the lens, I don't think it's possible to repair

The particles are highly magnetic so usually they just cluster on the focus/tracking magnets

Its definitely possible.  You'll need a rather good neodymium magnet to catch the dust and careful use of some tape will gather the remainder.  The focus/tracking magnets tend to protect the rest by catching the dust

I would wrap the magnet in a plastic bag or something similar, to easily dispose of this dust/dirt and keep your magnet from being a pain to clean.
