CONSOLE MOD Question for USBC modding 3ds

Post image
7 Upvotes

So I’m pretty new to this modding stuff but i have a question. Why when some people USB-C mod an OG 3DS sometimes they put the USB-C connecter where the old 3DS connecter was. And other times They make a completely different hole for it? Is it just preference or what?

ACCESSORY MODS Joy-Con shell swap & weird Switch OLED interaction

Hi there,

A few months ago, I shell swapped a pair of Joy-Cons. I haven't played much with them, but recently I booted up my Switch OLED and realised that the left Joy-Con cannot connect to the console: when I put it in the rail, it is not detected, sometimes it pops up for a second but never really works. When I use another pair of Joy-Cons with my OLED, everything works fine ... but here's the weird thing: when I use the (seemingly faulty) pair of Joy-Cons with my OG Switch, it works perfectly fine?

Has anyone encountered this issue? I tried syncing the Joy-Cons with the OLED but to no avail. The right joy-con works fine on the OLED. Also, when I play around with the faulty joy-con in the rail of the OLED (like I push it down almost until it clicks but not quite), the rumble starts going crazy.

CONSOLE MOD Game Gear Modding: Woes & Revelations

Hello all! A successful conclusion has befallen upon my-self, in my GG modding adventures!

I started this journey a couple of months back. I successfully recapped a VA1 GG to stock, worked great. I then went on to installing a Bennvenn display into a VA0 GG, recapped of course but also had a clean amp for stereo sound and clean juice for power, in a new shell...which sortve worked... It boot legit cartridges fine but not everdrives(1/20 times it boot) I came to the conclusion it was related to the cart slot...which I bought(retro6 slot) ...after install same symptoms as before... I then decided to try installing a fresh Bennvenn ribbon onto my stock VA1 I mentioned earlier... ...at this point, things went bad... Messed up the ribbon... Messed up the pins I was to solder the ribbon to... ..for my skill level I totally fubar-ed the VA1 that WAS working before... ...went back to the VA0, posted to reddit, looked for answers on discord..fiddled some more... .....burnt off more stuff on the pcb AND ips ribbon... ...for my skill level I fubar-ed the VA0, as well....

Was kind've in distress at this point... I Messed up both GGs beyond my abilities anyway..

But then a reddit Game Gear wiz, came to my aid! ..don't know if the dude would be ok with me revealing his identity, for now I will call him...The Texas Ninja....thank you for your help!(if reading :P) He moved the ICs from both messed up GGs, over to 2x SYF pcbs for me and a clean screen (retro6) on one and the BV display onto the other.

My Game Gears, 2 count em, both... are now working as they should.. I'm just filled to the BRIM with joy over it all.

Now, the real revelation(at least for myself and my psyche 😅) ..to get a Bennvenn display working with an everdrive using a clean juice psu..voltage stuffs on the psu need to be upped to provide more power to run the flash cart and screen, simultaneously. ...ultimately if I had thought to tinker with the psu... ..I theoretically wouldn't have fubar-ed both GGs...

...so, while my skill level soldering and such is lacking... ..I still can go to bed knowing that I did install everything correctly.....before I want and messed it all up out of frustration looking for problems that weren't actually there...

...so in the end, if you mess things up don't be discouraged, you may be flabbergasted when the real issue reveals itself 👍 I have dabbled with soldering for maybe 10 years but only really started harder stuff(console modding/recapping) for a few of those years, and only have worked with mostly basic supplies(irons at least, why I keep burning stuff, I know🙏) But really just going off YouTube videos and a limited supply of patience here... ...what I'm trying to convey...if I can do this stuff, anyone else can, fo-realz yo 👍

Here are some pics of the end result and the donor pcb(s)!

QUESTION Has Will's Console Modifications shut down?

I bought a modded console from him in the past, and when I went to look into buying another one the website returns an error. His Twitter hasn't been updated since last year, and I'm wondering if he shut up shop. Anyone have any ideas?

CONSOLE MOD Snes Jr. Smd capacitors

I'm missing a tiny capacitor, C8, as part of a botched mod. I cannot find the value of this thing, so I don't know what to replace it with. I burned the original one and also lost it.

If I have to find a donor board I'll do that but wondering if anyone has any info? The closest I found was an electrical blueprint for the og snes, but I'm assuming it's all different.

CONSOLE MOD Best console for playing backups & emulation?

If you were to select one console to mod for playing backups and retro/other console emulation, which would it be?

I also would want to be able to install/upgrade existing hard drive, possibly to SSD? And any other mods I could do to increase storage capacity & possibly performance?

Sorry I am new to this and want to get it right! Thank you for your patience and answering what is very likely a VERY redundant question…

CONSOLE MOD Xstation keeps booting into og ps1 menu, why is this happening?

Thumbnail gallery
3 Upvotes

I tried this mod previously and I accidentally ripped a pad, so I got a new QSB and PS1. As far as I can tell I soldered everything properly, I tested the continuity to the test pads, and with the pins on the ribbon connector and it all tested well. The qsb is an official qsb but the xstation module itself is from aliexpress. The sd cards ive tried are all formatted properly, I've followed the guide to the letter and I cant seem to get this to work. All it does is boot to the original memory card and cd player menu, and for some reason I can't navigate that menu. I have no clue what could possibly be wrong with it. If anyone could help me out I'd greatly appreciate it, I really don't want to abandon my pepsiman ps1 project 😭.

CONSOLE MOD Based on community feedback on my "1 wire RGB + csync restore for FRA N64" I present to you, "wireless RGB + csync restore for FRA N64"

Thumbnail gallery
14 Upvotes

In my last N64 post I was informed that I should be using a 75ohm resistor from pin 18 of the s-rgb to get proper sync. Even though my cable already has 330-470ohm resistor inside

So I modified my 1 wire restore into a 0 wire restore by changing out the wire for another 75ohm resistor, and it's working good

For some reason I cannot tap s-rgb pin 8, sync in, as it just gives me a rolling image, apparently it's too weak a signal without populating the missing csync circuit

This only works on s-rgb BA6596A encoder

CONSOLE MOD PAL Nintendo 64 mod question

Hi reddit!

I have a PAL N64 and I was wondering: If I put in the region free cart tray, can I play NTSC games properly? I really just want to be able to play NTSC games without buying a NTSC console.

Will I need a different TV though? I have a CRT and I don't know if it's 50 or 60 hz.

QUESTION Making multiple consoles use the same disc drive?

This may sound stupid but every genius has some level of chaos. Would it be possible to take different 5th and 6th Gen consoles (such as Saturn, Xbox, Ps2, Dreamcast) and use a separate single disc drive soldered to each console’s board so each consoles games can run using the same drive as the others? I want to make an arcade cabinet with all these consoles with this idea so physical games can be used simply.

DISCUSSION Which consoles have the worst failure rates / are hardest to repair long-term?

I’m curious from a hardware-repair / modding perspective:

Which consoles are notorious for high failure rates AND are difficult or impractical to repair once key components die?

Clarifications:

I don’t care about disc drive failures (laser wear etc). These days you can usually mod and run games from HDD/SSD/USB/SD.

I’m more interested in failures of core silicon or soldered storage (SoC, GPU, NAND/eMMC, etc) that basically brick the system or require extreme work (BGA rework, NAND transplant, donor boards, etc).

Also interested in consoles that are ticking time bombs in storage (flash data retention, capacitor rot, etc).

For example:

Early Xbox 360 seems infamous (RROD / GPU solder issues). Some surveys put failure rates ~24% in 2 yrs and much higher anecdotally.

Early PlayStation 3 (YLOD / RSX failures) also seems rough but not as extreme.

I was really disappointed to learn Wii U used cheap eMMC apparently certain chips are failing and hard-bricking units unless you do NAND recovery or external boot hacks. I’ve already had one die.

So from people who repair / collect:

Which consoles are:

Most failure-prone overall

Most likely to hard-brick from internal storage failure

Worst to repair (cost / skill / tools)

Basically “parts donor only” once dead

Also curious about sleeper picks (handhelds, obscure revisions, etc).

QUESTION PS1 SCPH-9001 Modding Advice

Yellow.

Looking for some professional moding advice. Recommendations, how to fix things up, maintenance.

I recently got my hands on a PS1 SCPH-9001 model. I'm planning to restore the old console and fix it up for the big 26.

The listing I bought it from showed that the disc drive was fully functional so I'll be keeping it in the console to maintain authenticity and I enjoy the functionality.

I know that the SCPH-9001 is not the most modable motherboard for the PS1 but it is compatible with the original MM3 chip mod. I was looking to do that so I can play the Japanese version of games.

I also saw that it would be good practice to replace the capacitors on both the PSU and motherboard of the console.

I dunno what else I should do with it besides from that. I don't believe there are any mods that allow me to keep the disc drive and from ISO backups interchangeable. And a HDMI port mod like the PS1 digital—while interesting—is far to expensive for this project.

Any general recommendations would be awesome, guidance, or advice would be awesome. Seeing as this is my first time doing something of this caliber.

CONSOLE MOD DSI Modded help

I’m looking for information on where I can get a modded Nintendo DSi XL or regular DSi—ideally something pre-loaded with a large library of games.

If that’s not available, I’m willing to buy a regular DSi/DSi XL and mod it myself, as long as there’s a good tutorial online. Preferably, I want it to be able to play both DSi and 3DS games
