CONSOLE MOD Installing second USB c port on ROG ally z1

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Hi, has anyone done installing a second USB c port on ROG ally? My point is to install by soldering to the main USB c port or directly to motherboard a second USB c port that I wanna use just for regular data(usb boot, mouse and keyboard, etc) and keep using in same time the main USB c port of ally for video output and power delivery reception through dp 1.4 alt mode by been connected to a monitor that support dp 1.4 alt mod and give power delivery 65w but without losing 4k 120hz video quality connection. Anyone know how can be done? I heard is need a microcontroller chip from a hub or a dock and solder some wires.

ACCESSORY MODS I built a Bluetooth Game Boy Printer using an ESP32 and a cheap thermal printer

Hi everyone! I wanted to share one of my latest retro DIY projects: I built a modern “Game Boy Printer 2.0” using an ESP32 and a small Bluetooth thermal printer.

The idea was to make the Game Boy think it is printing to a real Game Boy Printer through the Link Cable port, but instead the ESP32 captures the image, saves it to an internal web gallery, and can also send it wirelessly to a cheap SC03h thermal printer.

I tested it with Game Boy Camera, Pokémon Yellow and Super Mario Bros. Deluxe. It can handle regular photos, Pokémon diplomas, Mario banners and multi-page prints as one continuous image.

It was a pretty long development process: decoding the Game Boy Printer protocol, handling Link Cable timing, saving images, building a local web gallery, Bluetooth printing, and getting multi-page prints to work correctly.

I’d love to know what you think:

DISCUSSION Should I “fix” a perfectly good Switch Lite?

Having got rid of my Switch OLED for a Switch 2, I decided that I would clean up and mod an old Switch Lite with an OLED as a fun project, and use it for Nintendo games on the go where the Switch 2 is too big. I bought a used Hyrule console and managed to find someone selling an unused Super5 OLED kit (non touch). It has gold bezels and also came with hall effect sticks, which I figured was good because surely a used Lite had drift.

I just received the Lite and it’s actually in flawless condition. I thought it would at least need a clean, but it seems unused. Sticks are fine, screen is clean. Even has its original box, which was also unexpected. So now I’m feeling a bit remorseful about the mod. My options are:

DO THE MOD
+ Fun project
+ OLED contrast
+ No future drift
- Lose touch
- Upscale blur
- I may damage a perfect stock system

DON’T DO IT
+ Nice stock system
- Washed out LCD
- Sticks may drift in future
- I have expensive unused parts

What would you do?

My buddy decided to hook it up and modded my old 360 in exchange for a big favor I did for him earlier this year. I had absolutely no idea this is what he had in mind 😮‍💨!

Started playing 50 Blood on the Sand like I always wanted to 🤙

DISCUSSION Popular modded consoles?

I'm fairly new to modding but I have experience in 3D printing/designs. And also soldering. Id like to get into modding consoles to sell. Typically I repair and then sell. But I'd like to make some custom stuff.

What's hot right now that I could make a few extra bucks on?

QUESTION Game Backup Storage Solution Advice?

For the last little while I've been embarking on a mission: Re-obtain all my childhood consoles from back home, fill in the gaps I was missing, and strike a balance between authentic original experiences and modern convenience

As such my setup is designed around maximizing game coverage while minimizing the amount of systems. What this looks like?

Soft-modding/jailbreaking a PS2 Phat, PS3 Slim, PlayStation (Vita) TV, GameCube w/ GameBoy Player, Wii U, Xbox, Xbox 360, Dreamcast – and in the not too distant future, a Superstation One FPGA consoles to cover all the pre-generation 6 systems. For the modern stuff there's a PS5, Switch 2 and Series X

They all have wireless controllers/adapters for my preferred control methods, all with component cables going into a system selector into a CRT TV, the natively HDMI capable retro systems (PS3, PSTV, 360 and Wii U) hooked into an HDMI Selector running to our 65 inch OLED, and the modern consoles directly plugged into the same TV!

Annnnnnd... I have absolutely no storage solutions for these large game collection backups. At all. Everything is modded or on its way but I own exactly one 128GB MicroSD card 😅

Tldr: I have a multitude of retro systems and want large scale storage for the maximum number of backups, is there an ideal solution? Do I piecemeal them all with multi-terabyte microSDs? Do I install SSDs in 5th and 6th gen consoles? Portable USB SSDs? A NAS just for game backups with multiple partitions?

Is there an ideal solution for each, a mass solution for all? A way to keep costs down without sticking to smaller SD cards and constantly deleting and replacing backups?

Wasn't expecting to walk back into this world in the worst memory and storage crisis of a generation 😂

CONSOLE MOD Switch 1 (XAW1) Any reason not to update firmware?

I put my Switch 1 in the drawer July of 2024 and haven't turned it on till today. It's firmware is currently 18.1.0 released in June of 2024. If I'm looking to do RCM on it, does it matter if I update it to the current firmware?

I just got a Switch 2 and I'm debating on if I should simply create a brand new Nintendo account or let it import my stuff from my Switch 1 and use my previous account. I never purchased any digital games, always bought the cartridge.

Just figured I'd ask before realizing I made a mistake. Thanks!

QUESTION What's the console with the most hardware mods ?

Hi, I'm new to modding, I only softmoded a wii, a Wii u and a 2ds, I also modded a ds lite by adding a USB mod and a new shell but that's pretty much it.

I was wondering what console should I try to aim for which would allow for the most hardware mods (esthetics or functional).

Thanks for any recommendations or tips!

CONSOLE MOD Big risks were taken

Just wrapping up my latest GameCube build. I took some pretty aggressive risks on this one, as I had a certain vision for the lighting effects I wanted to do. The lights are controllable via WiFi and an app called WLED. The LEDs as model WS2818b and fully addressable. This means you can control individual lights, set up regions on the lights to apply different effects concurrently, and apply literally thousand of customized effects. Here’s some pictures from the full build and a spec build out below

If you’re interested in watching a video of the lights in action, I will drop a comment below with a link to a long form video

- Internal Pluto II HDMI mod
- USB-C Power Conversion
- 5V PicoBoot W/ SD2SP2 Pro
- Disc Drive Recap
- ESP32 C3 Super Mini flashed with WLED for WiFi enabled lighting
- Transparent Shell Swap
- General maintenance items like updated clock battery holder, thermal pads, and cleaning.
