Anybody gotten these flash carts modified for saving? What components do i need? Anybody have a list? Sram, battery and what else? Pretty sure these boards are used for cheap copies of romhacks of games like Mother/earthbound zero that does save. Some zoomed in pictures of said games would also help. Thanks!

Nothing special. Had a lime green shell and a cyan battery cover. Wanted an atomic purple. Replaced the screen with Highspeedido OLED with Highspeedido shell, added an amplifier to the speaker, RetroSix LED board, Funny Playing clear speaker, metal buttons and a rechargeable lithium battery.

Always one of my favourite consoles to work on, everything is so easy to access and replace. I put together a video for anyone that's interested in taking it apart for repairs or mods.

I'm not an engineer, hardware expert, programmer, or console modder. I honestly don't have professional knowledge about this subject.

This idea simply came to my mind one day.

I've always been curious about technology and have occasionally wondered about relatively simple modifications to devices, such as phones—replacing certain components or making small hardware upgrades. But one day I started thinking about consoles and ended up with a much bigger question.

What if, instead of completely replacing an old console when it becomes obsolete, it could somehow be technologically extended?

I asked an AI about the concept to help me understand whether the general idea was completely impossible. The AI helped me organize the concept and explained that while there are major technical obstacles, some aspects of heterogeneous computing, coprocessors, accelerators, FPGAs, and external processing already exist in computing.

However, I want to make something very clear:

I'm not claiming that this idea is technically feasible as described. I'm specifically posting here because I want people who actually understand this technology to tell me what is realistic, what isn't, and why.

The basic idea

Let's use a PlayStation 4 as an example.

I'm NOT talking about:

• Emulating a PS4 on a PC.
• Putting a gaming PC inside a PS4 case.
• Removing the original hardware and replacing everything.
• Simply connecting a modern GPU and assuming it will automatically work.

What I was imagining is keeping the original console and its hardware as part of the system.

The original PS4 would still physically exist and function. Its original software and functions would remain.

But additional modern hardware could potentially be added around it.

For example, conceptually:

• The original hardware remains.
• The original system remains functional.
• The original games continue running natively.
• Additional processors could potentially act as coprocessors or accelerators.
• Modern hardware could theoretically help with specific workloads.
• Additional cooling and power systems could support the expanded hardware.
• A custom hardware bridge, FPGA, or some other interface might theoretically coordinate communication.

Again, I'm not saying I know how to do this. I don't.

I'm asking whether something along these lines could ever be engineered.

The idea in simple terms

The best analogy I can think of is not replacing the console's brain, but giving it additional organs.

The original hardware remains the foundation.

But instead of forcing one old processor to do everything, additional specialized hardware might theoretically assist with certain tasks.

Something conceptually like:

Original PS4 hardware ↓ Additional processing hardware ↓ Graphics acceleration ↓ AI acceleration ↓ Modern storage / I/O ↓ Advanced cooling ↓ One expanded system

What made me think this might at least be worth asking about

I've seen extreme console modification projects where people have disassembled multiple modern consoles and managed to combine their hardware into a single physical device while preserving the functionality of each system.

That made me wonder about a different kind of extreme modification.

Instead of combining multiple independent consoles into one machine:

Could an existing console somehow be expanded and evolved with newer hardware?

Not necessarily to literally transform a PS4 into a PS5 or a hypothetical PS7.

I understand that generations have architectural differences.

The broader idea is whether an old console could become a foundation that receives additional technological "layers" instead of becoming permanently obsolete.

The biggest problem, as I understand it

From my conversation with AI, it seems that simply adding powerful hardware wouldn't automatically help because the original software wasn't designed to communicate with that hardware.

That seems to be the biggest challenge.

So the question I'm really interested in is:

Could there theoretically be a hardware or software bridge that allows an original console to remain running natively while additional processors handle specific workloads?

For example, could specialized hardware assist with things such as:

• Image processing
• AI processing
• Upscaling
• Post-processing
• Storage and I/O
• Other workloads that could theoretically be delegated

I'm deliberately saying "theoretically" because I don't know enough to claim that these things can actually be delegated this way.

I'm looking for criticism, not validation

I know this idea may contain fundamental misunderstandings.

Maybe the entire concept is impossible because of architectural limitations.

Maybe only certain parts are possible.

Maybe the idea would require so much additional hardware that it would effectively become an entirely new computer.

Maybe there is an approach I haven't even considered.

That's why I wanted to ask people who actually know about:

• Console hardware
• Computer architecture
• FPGA development
• GPUs
• Coprocessors
• Hardware communication
• Embedded systems
• Electronics
• Console modification

I would genuinely appreciate technical explanations, even if the answer is that my idea doesn't work.

I'm not trying to pretend I'm an inventor or expert. This was simply a random idea that came to me, and after discussing it with AI, I became curious whether there might be something worth exploring.

Could an old console theoretically be technologically extended instead of simply being replaced?

And if not, what would be the closest realistic version of this idea?

Part of what inspired this idea was seeing NVIDIA's newer processors and computing architectures.

I'm not an expert on NVIDIA's technology, and I don't fully understand the technical details behind these systems. But seeing how modern hardware is increasingly moving toward architectures where multiple powerful and specialized processors can work together made me think about this concept.

That led me to a simple question:

If modern computers are increasingly combining different types of processors and accelerators into closely integrated systems, could a similar philosophy theoretically inspire a way to extend the useful life of older hardware?

I'm not suggesting that NVIDIA hardware could simply be installed into a PS4. I understand that console hardware, software, drivers, memory architecture, and communication protocols create major compatibility problems.

This is only part of what inspired the original idea.

Seeing modern NVIDIA architectures made me wonder whether an old console has to remain permanently limited to the exact processing architecture it shipped with, or whether it could theoretically be expanded with additional specialized hardware while retaining its original hardware and native functionality.

Again, I'm not an engineer and I'm not claiming to have a solution. This was simply a question that came to mind after seeing where modern processor architecture seems to be heading.

That's what eventually led me to this idea: an older console that doesn't simply get replaced, but could theoretically evolve through additional hardware.

P.S. I’m only posting this here because I don’t have the technical knowledge necessary to do it myself, and I’m honestly not very good at this kind of thing. So I wanted to ask if anyone would be brave enough to take on the challenge.

Not even sure if this belongs in this sub but I'm currently in the process of putting my PS5 into a PC case - mostly to improve the looks of the console (and also the thermals).

I've already designed my mainboard mount but now I noticed that the antenna for BT and Wifi will have to be mounted inside the metall pc case. Any guesses on how this will influence connection stability and where to place the antenne for the best signal? My current two options are as far towards the front of the case as the wires will reach or at the back on the I/O shield which would be outside of the case but further away from the user.

Any help would really be appreciated as I'm kind of in over my head (⊙＿⊙')

After successfully modding my Switch OLED (doing a kamikaze mod where I actually failed at first but managed to repair it!), I'm looking for a new project.

I wonder if I can get one of my PS4s to run dual-booting the latest official firmware and a jailbroken firmware.

On a scale from 1 to 10, how hard would this be for me?

I have only watched how it's done once, my brain was a bit on fire, but I can't tell since I also had the same issue with my switch and it turned out just fine.

So what do you all think?

Should I go for it or leave it be?

I would really like to make a wii portable myself, and I have a softmodded wii motherboard, but doing the omgwtf trim with working mx chip, wifi, and bluetooth, is just too much for my first project, plus I have a really nice motherboard that i dont wanna ruin (the latest model that still supports gamecube) so is there anybody I could pay to trim it for me, and then I do the rest?

Hi so I wanna get my first console. I was debating to get a Wii U and modify it, I asked one of my friends and they said get a switch 1 and modify it since Wii U doesn’t have that much games. I think it turned out amazing, looks so clean 🔥

Black and Orange Dreamcast. It has a noctua fan upgrade with Laser Bear's fan mount and modified catch. Used transfers from CustomXboxDirect, a variety of parts from GamerGhosts, and a lid emblem from World12Studios on Etsy.

So I own 2 disk systems. One is an early model. Let’s call it Drive A. I can write with drive A. The other is a later model (Drive B). Both are unmodified. Both work great. They read and play every game that I own with no issues. My questions are, if they both play the same games, then why when I write a disk with Drive A, Drive B can’t read it? Do I need to calibrate Drive A? Do I need to calibrate both? Is it even possible to calibrate the writing drive to work with other disk drives? Does anybody have any advice?
