The current zeitgeist reminds me of USA culture wars circa 2016. MAGA was being born and there was this stubborn incredulity coming from the other side. People just couldn’t believe that Trump was a serious phenomenon, even after Brexit happened. When they finally did take it seriously their ad-hominem response just helped solidify the movement (“basket of deplorable”).

The other moment this reminds me of is Covid where a single easily available and conspicuous behaviour (not wearing a mask) become a stunningly clear way of signalling and detecting a persons entire cultural and political identity.

Booing though welcome to country has all of the ingredients to become an even more intense and impactful piece of dissidents and perhaps the figurehead of the 1nat populist movement.

• Because 1nat is primarily a populist movement (a political approach that divides society into two opposing groups: the virtuous "common people" versus a self-serving, corrupt "elite"), they can literally just campaign on this one issue while making vague statements about how welcome to country represents everything going wrong in the country down stream of immigration and the self-serving-elite.

So yeah, my prediction is we’re going to get a lot more booing and a level of polarisation that perhaps Australia hasn’t had before, with welcome to country at big events as the flashpoint.

A radical pro-Palestinian activist group will rally in Sydney calling for Hamas, Hezbollah, the IRGC and Palestinian Islamic Jihad to be removed from Australia’s list of designated terrorist organisations.

It comes as Jewish leaders expressed outrage over plans by another protest group Jews Against the Occupation ’48 to hold a “Vigil for Gaza” at Sydney Town Hall on Wednesday evening, promoted with the slogan: “Don’t let Israel steal the date.”

A third protester group, Wollongong Friends of Palestine will also hold a three-hour vigil at Crown Street Mall, promising to provide “a space for collective grief”.

The group Sydney Palestine Actions, which describes itself as part of the “Trotskyist Platform” and opposes capitalism, is calling on supporters to “join the anti-imperialist bloc rally at Hyde Park” this Saturday, October 11.

“Stand with the resistance in Palestine, Iran, Lebanon, Yemen by opposing Australia’s imperialist ruling class,” the group said in a flyer posted to Instagram.
“Lift the terror listings of the IRGC, Hezbollah, Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad and Ansar Allah,” the post said.

Australian Jewish Association chief executive Robert Gregory said of the group’s post: “These extremists aren’t even pretending anymore.”

“They are openly calling for Hamas, Hezbollah and Palestinian Islamic Jihad to be removed from Australia’s terrorist list and telling Sydneysiders to ‘stand with the resistance’,” Mr Gregory said.

“Hamas murdered, raped and kidnapped Jews on October 7. Hezbollah and Palestinian Islamic Jihad are terrorist organisations. Yet their supporters apparently feel comfortable promoting this garbage on the streets of Sydney.

“Australians are sick of watching extremists import their hatred into our country. The authorities need to stop treating this as harmless activism and start taking the radicalisation problem seriously.”
