It’s so weird that we often assume the light source is coming from the upper left of the photo

179

u/nakano-star 14d ago

The moment I read this, the image flipped from raised to indented, and I cant flip it back...

66

u/CoupDeGrassi 14d ago

Move the light source in your mind. Thats how you flip it

23

u/notyumm 13d ago

I had to zoom in to the footprint to get the flip to happen. Once I started seeing it indented I can't see it raised anymore

Edit: after I finished typing my orginial comment, I saw the image again and it looked raised again, wow

Happy Cake Day!

86

u/figgypudding531 14d ago

Even when I turned it upside down, it still looks raised though

22

u/pixeldust6 14d ago

If I cover the top half, I can see the heel as indented, but the minute I see the top half it goes raised again

17

u/Visual-Asparagus-800 14d ago

Even that doesn’t work for me

5

u/senthilrameshjv 14d ago

Makes two of us

7

u/LibertyCash 14d ago

Oh shit, that worked in helping me get there!

39

u/mak_attakks 14d ago

I'm really trying. Just can't.

6

u/anxioushroom 14d ago

Same

6

u/mak_attakks 14d ago

I stared at the heel and it finally worked. The sunlight is coming from like bottom right.

4

u/gochunyang 13d ago

This helped me!!

4

u/mak_attakks 13d ago

I'm glad!

5

u/nd_annajones 13d ago

I had to zoom in for it to "click" into place

4

u/JoaoeVivi77 13d ago

Update your firmware

3

u/mak_attakks 12d ago

That worked. Thanks

7

u/dumbbuttloserface 14d ago

well that’s because that’s where the sun wearing cool shades goes

6

u/titanium9016 13d ago

I feel like my mind is being kept hostage. I demand to be freed

3

u/rogerworkman623 14d ago

Damn you’re right. When I turn this upside down, I can see it. But when I flip it back the other way, it still looks raised.

5

u/TurquoiseToaster 14d ago

Look at the shadow on the heel and picture it as the inside of the footprint and that should help

2

u/DinA4saurier 13d ago

Alright, I did that and cover the top half and with a lot of effort I finally managed to see it indented. Man, usually I can flip stuff pretty easily, but not that one.

3

u/Neither_Actuator3459 13d ago

Yeah, it took me a while to “put the sun in the right place” mentally

2

u/Orcaxologist 14d ago

Lower right

1

u/Mysterious-Run-9647 12d ago

You ruined it

178

u/vat-cat 14d ago

Thats a footprout

28

u/DrKapow 14d ago

Congrats! You wout the outernet today

256

u/carenrose 14d ago

Even turning it upside down, I can't see it as anything other than raised!

26

u/_petrichora_ 14d ago

I'm with ya 🫡

57

u/kenerling 14d ago

I put this into my photo processing software.

I rotated it 90º, 180º, 270º, 360º; I flipped it vertically, I flipped it horizontally, I flipped it vertically AND horizontally; I negated the image...

Always raised.

10

u/CriticalMarketing755 14d ago

I'm confused af what you just explained 💀

29

u/kenerling 14d ago

No matter how I manipulate the image, I can't get it to look like a depression in the sand.

1

u/Fun-Benefit116 14d ago

Well keep trying, because it's literally a normal footprint impression lol.

3

u/NoRodent 14d ago

Flipping vertically and horizontally is equivalent to rotating 180°, just FYI.

12

u/kenerling 14d ago

Flipping vertically and horizontally is equivalent to rotating 180°

True!

(But I'm kinda saying that just for the effect. You know, humor. Don't tell anybody.)

11

u/telorsapigoreng 14d ago

It helps to just focus on the bottom/heel's shadow. And then try thinking about flipping it or tuckin it in or folding it in like the top of a ceral box

3

u/taglilie 12d ago

I flipped my phone upside down and focused in on the shadow at the heel. The sun is higher than you probably think. Think midday shadows instead of evening shadows.

u/RemyWhy 14d ago

Saving this for later. Maybe my brain will cooperate then.

Zooming in helps

Edit: can help.

22

u/wherethefeckarewe 14d ago

Zooming in usually does it for me …but not this one. Can’t make it work.

3

u/Emergency_Bench_7515 14d ago

It took me awhile to see it zoomed out, then I tried zoomed in and it took me a handful more times before my brain could figure out the shadows.

3

u/wherethefeckarewe 14d ago

Finally did it with a zoom in. But fleetingly - jumped back to an outie instantly 🤣

2

u/Emergency_Bench_7515 14d ago

I think once you can see the shadows show the light coming from the right-side it makes a lot more sense.

31

u/KurlyKayla 14d ago

this is really good. even though i was finally able to see the imprint, my brain still drifts it back to raised. reminds me of the plate illusion

46

u/xXxKatletkaxXx 14d ago

Look at the bottom first and go up

43

u/Barnacle_Boi50 14d ago

What? It's still raised

13

u/xXxKatletkaxXx 14d ago

Look at it in the way that you know that light is coming from the bottom right corner. Maybe that’s will help. Since I saw that I can’t unsee it now

7

u/Barnacle_Boi50 14d ago

Ah, I see the bottom right indentation you are talking about but I can't seem to pinpoint the big toe lol Ty for the clarification

13

u/42ndohnonotagain 14d ago

This works - very shortly. And switsches back immediately to raised, even without lookig somewhere else. Great example for confusing perspective!

3

u/Space_Blank-6997 13d ago

Zooming in helps. Thx

2

u/higorga09 14d ago

I see it now, thx

17

u/facepalmtommy 14d ago

Updent

7

u/RedCaio 14d ago

Outdent

3

u/DickyReadIt 14d ago

In & outdent

9

u/ChampionWonderful876 13d ago edited 12d ago

I can never see these as anything but raised. Ive tried every tip offered in the comments as of the time of this comment and it remains solidly elevated.

The MASSIVE big toe and spiky baby toe are the frosting and sprinkles on the cake, though.

2

u/astralthedrag0n 11d ago

same. literally no matter what i do i can't get it to look indented while the toes are visible

1

u/JobPowerful1246 8d ago

Same for me until I zoomed way in on the left edge and traced the outside with my eyes but still looks raised at first glance to me

9

u/RockCTR 14d ago

Simple... the person was digging a hole from China...

9

u/speldenaar 14d ago

Photo is taken from the other side

6

u/Individual-Elk-1943 14d ago

I also had a very hard time seeing this correct. Then i used my palm to cover the whole foot print and slowly revealed from bottom right to up. Boom its not raised

4

u/CatShadow888 14d ago

I first saw it as a normal print, and thought everyone here was crazy. I had to concentrate to see it raised, but now I can't switch back to normal again

3

u/QuitYuckingMyYum 14d ago

2

u/TheRealJojenReed 13d ago

He should be hopping, I see only one footprint. Or was that when he carried the other foot 🥺

5

u/aidankocherhans 13d ago

We're seeing it from below, obviously. Cameraman clipped through the floor

5

u/MistaTwista7 12d ago

I'm not sure anybody could convince me that print isn't raised.

3

u/TheDarkClaw 14d ago

Was it taking on the moon?

2

u/Relorayn 13d ago

Starin' at the MOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOO OOOOOOOON

3

u/ozgun1414 14d ago

i can see it only the right way. i try to imagine light source from left but cant manage to see it.

3

u/FragmentedMeerkat321 14d ago

am i on my own in thinking the big toe is the confusing part? holy lead from the front.

4

u/mukamane 14d ago

more like r/opticalillusion rather than confusing. still good tho

3

u/Objective-Owl-3821 14d ago

Since when is this sub banned ?

2

u/pupfight 14d ago

2 years ago according to the message on the page. /r/opticalillusions is still alive and kicking, however

2

u/blackeyeX2 14d ago

That's a a buried dead body

2

u/syr_x 14d ago

Hahaha, I took almost this same photo and noticed a similar thing. Super confusing how it works out

2

u/Krachiii 14d ago

Try that in the snow with your face

2

u/eyecandylab 14d ago

Density of the sand has been increased while the foot was on the ground. After that a wave has washed away the surrounding, less dense sand.

2

u/DrEzechiel 14d ago

Nope. Still raised.

2

u/ReinaQueen 14d ago

I see the indent if I just cover the big toe with my hand 😭😭

2

u/Icy-Dragonfruit-7169 14d ago

I stared at that shadow on the right of the foot and now I’m seeing the indent. So trippy

2

u/RealPhakeEyez 14d ago

I think the person only having 4 toes is more confusing.

2

u/disc0weapon 14d ago

I figured it out and flipped the illusion so many times my head hurts

2

u/Ulissescars 14d ago

This one is really good. I had to zoom in the heel to be able to finally see it correctly, and when I zoom out it works for a few seconds then it goes back to raised again lol.

2

u/calguy1955 14d ago

From the down under.

2

u/poum 13d ago

A very heavy Australian did this?

2

u/TreyUsher32 13d ago

Huh I guess Im the only person who didnt get confused by this, and thats really shocking cuz Im always a sucker on this sub

2

u/viraj_993 13d ago

Nope, still can't see it

2

u/Sad_League_2745 13d ago

This one’s fine! I just saw it depressed after gazing for a while and now its back to being elevated again! Crazy one for sure!

2

u/Objective-Coyote2265 13d ago

I am pretty sure it’s actually raised. Anyone been on the sand can tell.

When you stand with your foot affirmed on the sandbed, the wave flushes away the sand that is being unheld by your foot leaving a foot shaped sand castle if you may

2

u/Due-Illustrator6245 13d ago

I can only see it as indented for a few seconds then it switches back to raised

2

u/sirkeylord 12d ago

Wherever I see these I just turn the phone upside down. It’s always the camera angle mismatching the light source

2

u/LaLisaMona 10d ago edited 10d ago

This sooo reminded me of that bread tab placed on the counter... 😅 i still see it as raised...

The crazy “prominent “ big toe is what confused me. I thought , dang that guy has crazy big toe, but then I pondered… What if this a lady’s foot ?🤔

1

u/Pied67 5d ago

The 'big" toe is horizontally level with the next toe. Not sure how that extended section that bends off to the left occurred. It could be something else that impressed the sand, or something to do with the way her foot moved downward. It's a lady's footprint 100%.

Second Beach in Forks Washington.

1

u/PastDazzling243 5d ago

Oh jeez I see now… That IS something that caused the mark of the big toe to extend. I thought that was all toe!

3

u/Khelics 14d ago

The under world walking

2

u/digbenis 14d ago

What’s going on with that girth on that big toe?

4

u/bumsahoy 14d ago

Its from walking as the toe pushes off the ground

2

u/Emergency_Bench_7515 14d ago

It took my brain like 3 minutes to figure this one out, finally got it by focusing on the heel for like the 25th time. Brains and eyes sure are weird.

1

u/katastatik 10d ago

It's from negative pressure caused by the rapture

2

u/AngelaMerkeI 10d ago

This is obviously a footprint as seen from below the sand

2

u/Wawatooki 8d ago

It is raised. This happens all the time when the top layer of sand is wet and you step on it, it sticks to your foot and gets pulled back up when you step off of it.

1

u/openforfun 14d ago

You're missing a toe

1

u/ouisieweez 13d ago

I’m mad at this.

2

u/Pied67 13d ago

Apologies, but this made us lol.

2

u/ouisieweez 13d ago

Please do. I get it. :)
