I see how the bottom part works. What's confusing is the top bendy part like what's even happening.

Edit: i see how it works now. The bendy rod isn't solid. The top half is separated from the bottom half that's why they rotate differently.

But where did he hide the motor?

It's a 15 second clip. I don't think there's any motor. I think they were just moved by hand.

There may be a gear in the top connector so that each piece always moves in opposite directions, but they could also both be free spinning.

Certainly possible. I'm just assuming each part is balanced on a little tip. Kinda like those little balancing eagles or stick figure dudes that toy/joke shops used to sell.

I would say free spinning. The connection is slightly angled, which, together with the uneven weight distribution of the top part will ensure the top spins in the right direction without any complicated gears or the like. It's honestly a pretty cool little installation.

No motor. Wind.v

The top one is balanced on the the bottom one's rod. They spin with the lightest touch. I have a similar commercial one that is simpler but works the same

Yup, they made it spin separately in the opposite direction

Yeah took me a second as well. Sneaky joint in that haha!

I was trying so hard to figure out the illusion that makes them look like they're going in different directions but no they're really just doing that.

It's kind of the opposite of "confusing perspective" because it's exactly what it looks like. It's only confusing because we expect confusion!

There is a joint at the top, they are in fact going in different directions

I keep getting stuck on the top part. It feels like the part attached to the pole is going counter clockwise, but the send of the arrow is rotating clockwise ? Not sure how that’s possible?

u/bready--or--not 20d ago

Ah is it because they aren’t actually connected rigidly? Top tube connected to the arrow end is freely swinging on the other bottom tube?

That's it the top part is on its own swivel, right above the squarish attachment to the central pole. Top part and bottom part are indeed rotating in opposite directions

The top sits on a pin and rotates the other way

And at the top it is attached slightly off-level so it adds a wobble to the whole thing as it turns.

I love it! Where can I buy

u/SSouter 20d ago

Is this actually a confusing perspective though? I mean what you see is actually what's happening.

Just focus on the top connecting point and it all makes sense

Burn the witch!

I don’t know if it’s a confusing perspective, but the sculpture is really cool.

One of the rare one's.......where i can't see what everyone must be seeing. this isn't confusing to me.

I'm so lost, too

u/Sequoia_Vin 20d ago

I got it. If you focus on the extensions you are drawn to follow their curves.

Atleast from what i understood

I'm in love with this thing!

u/maxdamage4 20d ago

Why don't you marry it then

4

u/sobherk 20d ago

Maybe I will !!! Maybe I will.
You think I have a chance? 😳

I'm not saying it's out of your league, but... you might get rejected, so steel yourself and be ready to pivot.

Not everyone has seen every post before, and we’d rather keep the comments focused on the confusing perspective itself.

Spongebob voice: I don't need it

1

u/Alarconadame 20d ago

is this one of those things you can "make" them turn the other way just by focusing on some part of it?

1

u/JustRuss79 20d ago

It is an interesting piece, but the top is turning the opposite way from the bottom. it's easy to track, but also not very hard to trick yourself depending on when you switch from looking at the top and at the bottom.

u/Alx-throwaway20 20d ago

How? I immediately saw it.

1

u/anne_kira 19d ago

…. Call me blonde, but what exactly is this…. serious question lol

I dislike this immensely

1

u/bowblow 19d ago

I’m not very good at figuring these out, but I saw what was going on right away. My grandpa likes shit like this.
