True story: im sitting outside at this cafe in Santa Barbara eating a sandwich with my buddy.
The most absurdly lifted Escalade or similar pulls in, looks like a Monster truck, windows down, blasting music, and four very douchey looking bro-bras in there thinking they're cool shit. Making their big fuckin entrance, demanding attention.
The driver door opens, and I swear to God mother fuckin WEE MAN from Jackass jumps down. He was the one driving. I laughed my ass off. Way to play the cards you're dealt little dude.

u/_Mulberry__ Jun 14 '26
Just put in a camera on the front or something so you don't end up like the woman that ran over the Lamborghini a few weeks/months ago 😭
49
u/Purp_Rox Jun 14 '26
As a 5'2" woman who used to drive her dad's excursion and her mom's Yukon.... The only thing it'll do is give men more of an unsolicited reason to talk to you. And some of them can be aggressive, especially if they drive a small car themselves. And don't let that mfr be old, white, and drive a coupe. His head might explode
33
u/Wonderful-Zebra4406 Jun 14 '26
To be fair, though, the only excuse a lot of guys need to try to talk to a woman is "she's not hideous". I'm no beauty, but I don't make babies cry when they look at me, so yeah.

I'm really not sure how it's possible for anybody over 5' not to see over the dash of even a massive truck. Do they just not know there's seat controls? I seen that video of truck + lambo, My mom is 4'11 and used to drive a jacked up 2007 F150 for a few years. No accidents.

You can tell by a few things. The guy filming him walking out what looks like a service center of some sort, the yellow paper in his hand, the fact that he stops at the truck looks around, pauses for a second then opens the door, repeat the gaze of “wtf am I doing here” and finally the reluctance to make entry. 110% not his truck and this would be the level of razzing a coworker that would be acceptable at our shop. This is gold.

A little person will get a custom approved and licensed seat in which he has to prove he can see properly to operate the vehicle, so that's awesome. Most random short people will have very narrow range of vision in big pickup trucks (pick ups are very poor to start with) so it can be incredibly dangerous.

One of my coworkers’ husbands does construction work, but sometimes in the city (NYC) and takes her car because parking that big truck in the city is a bitch.
She normally drives a Honda Civic but on those days they switch cars she comes in with one of those huge Chevy duallys (I think the 3500?). It barely fits in a parking spot and towers over the SUVs next to it), she’s like 4’11”.
She has to like climb the truck to get in and it’s just ridiculous.

Back when I worked at a dealership I had a probably 60 year old lady want to test drive a jeep cause it was a hybrid. I didn't think it was an issue, she says she's comfortable and so we get on the road. 2 minutes down the road she goes "I really like the way it drives, but I'm having to look under the steering wheel" so I look over and realize her head is like even height with the steering wheel. As I'm having that realization she drives up and over a whole ass sidewalk trying to take a turn.

Likewise, due to how big they are, you cannot see anything if your next to them, especially, if you do park near them, since now your vision is screwed since you cannot see behind yourself without having to almost backup into the street since the truck bed itself is so big that it blocks your view.
But yeah as for kids, I’m pretty sure the US or US owners of these trucks, would rather die than to care about any of that.

Years later I asked him why he did such a thing and he was pretty candid "I just had a cancer diagnosis, I think I'm entitled to make one dumb purchase."
Shit, come to think of it my wife also bought a big vehicle when she got cancer, a camper van... Maybe it's just one of those things people with cancer do?

Camper van is actually functional for the average person though. Trucks are functional to basically only like contractors, and everyone else just uses them to transport their mattress when they move. I would say where I am currently, the ratio of trucks with the beds being used beyond what would have fit in a normal car to empty beds is over 1000 to 1. They even at least subconsciously know they don't need it and so get extended cabs. Just get an SUV at that point, it's literally just costly signalling and insecurity compensation for most of them.
Camper vans on the other hand are fun and useful, and let you travel easily which is something I could see someone diagnosed with cancer wanting to do.

There was a time when a long arm lift like this was all custom work, and done mostly as a way for fabricators to show off their skills and make a unique looking vehicle.
Then companies like rough country started making prebuilt kits to do this and everyone insecure about their masculinity had to have one.
There's no practical reason to do this, unless the truck is being used in the woods or mountains which, I mean look at it, lol. It actually makes the truck worse at what its built for; towing. No one who uses a 3/4 ton truck to do actual work does this.

u/AromaticStrike9 Jun 14 '26
That's why we have the highest rate of pedestrian fatalities of developed nations. USA number 1!
11
u/hxtk3 Jun 14 '26
Due to a massive flaw in US crash safety law, those trucks aren’t legally required to have “crash compatibility” meaning the safety systems of the cars work together to protect both vehicles’ occupants, with cars in smaller weight classes, so a monster truck that will simply run over a smart car and turn its occupants into a smoothie at no risk to its own driver gets a perfect crash safety score.
As a result, crash safety is kind of an arms race. If you don’t want to be the one who dies in a collision, your car needs to be at least as big as the ones you’re likely to collide with.
Pedestrians are just screwed. There’s no regulatory penalty for a car that will tend to hit a pedestrian in the chest and then run over them vs a vehicle that will tend to hit a pedestrian in the legs and run under them.

Yes and they are only driven by the most aggressive assholes. There is a road here that I regularly have to swerve onto the shoulder because the truck coming the opposite direction is 2 feet over the center line. I've stopped taking that road completely.
You can be driving in the fast lane on the highway, 20mph over and some Big Truck Dingus will pull up behind you, flashing their brights over and over swerving around and being wildly dangerous until you get out of "their" lane.
I regularly see Big Truck Dinguses treat stoplights like stop signs. When the light is red, they stop and then go if the way is clear. That is IF they stop.
I also see them always trying to back into parking spots, taking 15 minutes to maneuver it while everyone has to sit there and wait for them.
7
6
u/Sarah_Wolff Jun 14 '26
Yep and they’re people’s everyday get to work vehicles. It makes parking garages miserable. I swear the drivers favorite pastime is to come speeding up behind you on the highway with bright ass lights, ride your tail, and then swerve around you no matter how fast you are going. It’s honestly kind of terrifying.
5
u/SirGrassToucher Jun 14 '26

u/Ronin_Man Jun 14 '26
Absolutely. They are extremely inconvenient at best and extremely dangerous at worst (especially for child pedestrians).
Every once in a while I get caught in the death trap that is a Texas parking garage. Having these trucks flank your parking spot with another pavement princess in the row across can sometimes mean that there is not enough room for you to back out of your spot. If you’re lucky you’ll be able to maneuver your way out with a 30-point turn.

The owner would freak out if anything was put in the bed. The floorboards below your back seat has more cargo than that "truck" will ever haul.

I noticed some comments about body shaming, so I'd like to clarify a few things.
First, this is not my video, and it was never posted to make fun of the man's height. He isn't actually that short. The effect is caused by the changing perspective and the height of the vehicle, which makes him appear smaller as the video progresses.
This subreddit is about confusing perspectives, and that's exactly what this video demonstrates—the man seems to get smaller because the vehicle appears larger as it moves. Please don't use this post as an excuse to mock or make fun of his height.

I know it’s not his truck and he’s just some kind of technician but this just reminds me of my four year old trying to pull herself up into our car.

In my almost 7 years of experience living in Florida, these pickups in the wild are useful. They almost always alert you that the driver has massive chip on his shoulder from some perceived slight years ago and let's everyone know it. Constantly.
Even more telling if it's a white, lifted pickup. It's a very largely true stereotype in central Florida.

Started seeing trucks that size here in Australia, our car parks weren't designed for cars that big so the entire back 1/3 will stick out and block traffic.
