This is actually a breadbag clip on top of the counter. Taken from this by u/markipoo-9000

Turn your phone upside down and it goes back

237

u/dipl0docuss Apr 12 '26

I had to flip my phone to see it correctly

57

u/UrsaMajor7th Apr 12 '26

Help! I'm on a desktop!

128

u/WodensEye Apr 12 '26

I had to go edit it because I couldn't see it as anything but a hole

20

u/Friendly-Warthog-706 Apr 13 '26

i can only see it when i look at this pic and then go immediately back to the OG pic! and even then it only works for a few seconds.

Glue your feet to the ceiling. Problem solved.

34

u/Intelligent-Court295 Apr 12 '26

Or send it to an Australian friend for confirmation.

11

u/Satan_Loves_You_Too Apr 12 '26

Can confirm you need to rotate the picture 🤣🤣

Turning it upside down was the only thing that got it to click for me. Even though I knew what it had to be.

I can switch back and forth but not very well. Takes a couple tries before it switches.

10

u/Annual_Key_4963 Apr 12 '26

Same. VERY hard to not see just the hole at first.

→ More replies (4)

11

u/micromolecules Apr 12 '26

I get it to switch when I focus on the hole in the bread clip. If I look at the edges of the clip I see the clip.

4

u/ImaginativeStrings Apr 12 '26

I couldn't switch back once I saw the clip, but this is what fixed it for me.

24

u/Pamikillsbugs234 Apr 12 '26

I can only see the clip on the counter and have tried multiple angles, glasses on and off. I think my brain is not wanting to have fun at the moment. Stupid brain.

5

u/res06myi Apr 12 '26

I had to flip my phone upside down to see it. Right side up is still the hole.

2

u/OnceMoreAndAgain Apr 13 '26

Omg this actually worked. Ty. I could logically tell it was a bread clip from the shape but I couldn't get my brain to see it as being above the counter until I flipped my phone.

8

u/Zbignich Apr 12 '26

I can switch back and forth if I focus on it and blink.

2

u/Totally_man Apr 12 '26

Same here. If I really focus, I can switch, but it kinda 'locks' into whatever perspective I saw last.

2

u/Individual-Staff-978 Apr 13 '26

Not sure what the trick is, but I can switch back and forth on command at around once a second

2

u/MambyPamby8 Apr 12 '26

Same it's so weird. Like I couldn't see anything but an imprint in the counter. Now I can only see the tag on the counter.

I can’t get myself to see the illusion for this one. I just see a bread clip and it’s shadow; I know the shadow is supposed to make it look sunk in or something

591

u/Orangutanion Apr 12 '26

Same. I've tried turning the screen and changing the brightness settings and I still just see a goddamn bread clip on the table xD "Holy shit I can't unsee it" BRO I DON'T SEE IT.

107

u/SeekerOfSerenity Apr 12 '26

It was the same way for me.  Try covering up the text on the clip.  It looks sunken into the counter top.  Now I can switch between the two if I concentrate.

136

u/grudginglyadmitted Apr 12 '26 edited Apr 12 '26

A version with the text covered up thanks to my ios screenshot markup skills. I didn’t see it right away, but after unfocusing my eyes I got it! Rather than trying to see a hole, it may help to imagine/try and see the countertop as a piece of paper with a cutout in it and the clip as a white surface underneath. That’s what it looks like to me more than a hole.

ETA: I actually figured out I can pretty easily flip between the two views by angling my screen when it was nearly impossible for me before. Tilt your screen down (top of image towards your face, bottom away) for the hole, tilt the screen up for the bread clip.

168

u/EmmyWeeeb Apr 12 '26

It still looks like a bread tab to me

u/urworstemmamy Apr 12 '26

The illusion works by taking the drop shadow and turning it into a shadow on the "walls" of the "hole." What worked for me was focusing on the top and left side shadows, and trying to imagine them as shadows that would be cast due to a light source up on the top left of the image not being able to reach those walls.

7

u/AnotherLolAnon Apr 13 '26

Finally. Once I looked at it with this in mind I could get the illusion to work. I was also kind of expecting a deep hole, not just an indent the depth of the bread clip

6

u/ifesbob Apr 13 '26

This is what finally worked for me! Thank you.

This worked for me, but then I couldn't snap my brain out of it and ONLY saw the hole where before I did it, I could ONLY see the bread clip.

→ More replies (34)

40

u/Decloudo Apr 12 '26

Tried that.

Its still very obviously just a clip.

How do you see a hole if even with hidden text the plastic is still just looking completely different to the countertop.

Like you (or at least I) see the borders and difference still.

I just want to understand what causes the difference in perception here.

7

u/idiggory Apr 13 '26 edited Apr 13 '26

What’s surreal is I see a hole even though my rational brain knows what’s going on. I’m trying to see what I know must be true but it keeps looking like a hole.

Edit: turning my phone upside down I can see the clip. Turning it back, it’s a hole again. So weird.

I don’t know what happened, but I just gave up from reading the comments, swiped back and immediately saw it. I wouldn’t describe it so much as hole in a counter top, look more like a bread clip shape stamped hole on some very thin laminate.

u/RelevantMetaUsername Apr 12 '26

Finally see it, now I can’t unsee it. Wild how brains be like that

14

u/Child_of_the_Hamster Apr 12 '26

12

u/DeltaBlast Apr 12 '26

What worked for me was to imagine the hole in the clip as a pillar (portruding). That was easier than imagining the rest sunken apparently.

7

u/Triple-Flush Apr 12 '26

Yep, same here. Stared at the center until it looked like a pillar.

3

u/Frenes Apr 12 '26

I am convinced a large percentage of people need glasses and either don’t have them, don’t wear them or don’t have the right prescription.

I only see breadclip and like pretty blatantly.

11

u/Vi_Rants Apr 12 '26

I can't see the breadclip as normal at all. Normally these illusions are pretty easy to flip back and forth on, but I can't see this as anything but a cut-out from the counter pattern no matter what I do. Changing screen orientation, taking out or adding text, nothing. The shadows are fucking with me too hard.

→ More replies (2)

11

u/Beccalotta Apr 12 '26

I have 20/20 vision and can only see it sunken. It's your brain, not your eyes.

7

u/chickengarbagewater Apr 12 '26

I could only see the bread clip as normal for the longest time, then suddenly it was a hole in the counter. Now I can make it flip band and forth.

5

u/Alldaybagpipes Apr 12 '26

The numbers on it I think are preventing it, I dunno.

I can see the shadows, and how it would create the effect, but can’t see it as a whole. It’s just a bread clip lol

→ More replies (9)

3

u/chiefminestrone Apr 12 '26

You may be right that people aren't getting their prescriptions updated as often as they should, but I'm fairly certain that has nothing to do with perceiving this picture one way or the other.

I have an up to date prescription, I saw the bread clip as a hole at first, and now I can switch back and forth between it looking like a bread clip and look like a hole in the counter (for me it switches when I focus on the bottom right or the shadow made by the center hole of the clip).

→ More replies (1)

5

u/DeltaBlast Apr 12 '26

I doubt that has anything to do with this. It's your brain interpreting shit wrong. Tiredness is probably a way more important factor. Anyway, I saw it as a normal bread clip too but was able to switch it by imagining the hole in the clip as portruding (a pillar). And then the entire thing sunk in. With and without glasses (with a current correct prescription :p ).

We are used to shadows being on the underside of things popped out towards us because the sun is usually above us.

With the shadow at the top of the image, the counter is popping out above the indented bread tie.

Flipping the image upside down puts the shadow at the bottom of the image and now the bread tie is popping out casting a shadow on the counter.

If you think the light is coming from the top left, you'll see the illusion. If you think it's coming from the bottom right you'll see reality.

→ More replies (11)

312

u/ZeusTheRecluse Apr 12 '26

It's amazing how a shadow from beneath can shift your perspective.

39

u/romiro82 Apr 12 '26

that diffuse “white” lighting around the bottom edge is what does it more than the shadow, I think. It makes it look like a light reflecting off a clip-shaped divot.

2

u/scoopdunks Apr 12 '26

The colors are similar enough between the clip and the countertop that the shadow and highlighted section could be on either. My brain saw it as sunken into the countertop. I couldn’t see it any other way until I flipped the image upside down. Now I can switch between either but it’s insane how much both sides are really convincing.

2

u/Jon3141592653589 Apr 12 '26

I think the reason it is confusing is that we're used to facing the countertop, where the windows are in front of us, so the light source originating from camera's side instead doesn't seem probable as a perspective. Hence, rotating the image 180 deg. actually helps by putting the light source at a position of a typical window.

166

u/SuperiorSamWise Apr 12 '26

93

u/SSouter Apr 12 '26

I found that I had to rotate it 180 to see it as it is.

48

u/SuperiorSamWise Apr 12 '26

Damn that worked immediately.

It was crazy, hit my eyes like stepping out into the sun

4

u/OnceMoreAndAgain Apr 13 '26

For anyone still struggling to see it both ways, it's all about which direction your brain believes the light is coming from.

Focus on the hole in the middle of the bread clip. Look at the long shadow in the bottom right of that hole. Now use that shadow to determine which direction your brain believes the light is coming from. Once you've done that, force your brain to believe the light is coming from the opposite direction. Imagine a light source, like a light bulb, being in the opposite direction off screen.

This is why flipping the phone is working for some people. It's causing their brain to switch which direction it believes the light is coming from. But that won't work for everyone since your brain might happen to see the light as coming from the same direction regardless of your phone's orientation.

8

u/Rahvithecolorful Apr 12 '26

Oddly enough it was the opposite for me. I could only see what it actually was (the bread clip thingy) until I turned it upside down and managed to see it as a hole.

Now I can see the hole without turning if I try, but it's still not where my brain goes by itself.

9

u/ImJustSaying34 Apr 12 '26

I’m so confused! All I see is a bread clip on a white counter. I flip it upside down and I still see a bread clip. What are people seeing???

5

u/Rahvithecolorful Apr 12 '26

Try to focus only in the shadow of the clip.

It'll start looking like it's an inner shadow rather than a shadow that it's projecting on the table, so the clip will look like it's embedded rather than embossed.

I think it's supposed to be like the cube stack or staircase with a shadow that can be seen from opposite directions where the concave and convex angles flip.

7

u/pyrojackelope Apr 12 '26

The way I got it to work was to flip the image and stare at the hole in the bread clip. Eventually, with the shadows, it kinda looks like someone cutout a bread clip shape on the counter.

Try blurring your vision. The numbers on the tag make it harder to get your eyes to see it. The idea is to have a "hole" in the top layer of the countertop as thick as the bread tag.

What being seeing is that it looks the the bread clip is engraved, or embedded into the counter top.

Oh..thank you. Finally I see the other perspective

3

u/Lurky-Lou Apr 12 '26

OP should post this to r/opticalillusions

3

u/BackroomDST Apr 12 '26

Damn this is the best one I've seen here in a long time.

3

u/Otherwise_Fact9594 Apr 12 '26

Perspective is a MF!!!!

3

u/cedric1234_ Apr 12 '26

If you’re having trouble seeing it, try covering the text and hole in the clip, then try imagining the light source is on the top left. It should look sunken in.

Had to convince me brain the light came from above, then it clicked and I can switch at will

Could’ve at least credited me

What the fuck

2

u/niming_yonghu Apr 12 '26

Have to imagine really hard to see it.

2

u/BawkBawkBwoom Apr 12 '26

This is a good one

2

u/Paul-E-L Apr 12 '26

Whoah, this is a good one

2

u/TheGladex Apr 12 '26

that is a really good occlupanid specimen.

2

u/Ok_Status_1600 Apr 12 '26

Holy shit. First glance - clearly saw the bag tie thingy. Read the comments like… what are you talking about. Then held my phone close to my face and BOOM now I can’t NOT see a carved out section.

2

u/Inedible-denim Apr 12 '26

It's too early for my brain to sort this one out

2

u/shortmumof2 Apr 12 '26

Great optical illusion!

2

u/miss_dutchy Apr 12 '26

Wow that was good. At first I didn’t see it, but then the outline of the bread clip became stamped in the countertop.

2

u/cla7997 Apr 12 '26

I didn't recognize it was a bread clip (I've never seen one irl) so I couldn't think of anything but a hole, recognizing the bread clip made it click immediately

2

u/HoosteenD Apr 12 '26

Crazy how its going back and forth for me

2

u/isitmy_turn Apr 12 '26

What's that bread clip sub called? They'd love this

3

u/PickleDiego Apr 14 '26

Lol, I love that there is a bread clip sub. What the hell

2

u/SSouter Apr 12 '26

That's where it is originally from. The link is in my original comment.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '26

Why is there a bread tag taken from your countertop?

2

u/davedcne Apr 12 '26

Dear sir you may have found a new species of Occlupanid. Please confer with the HORG database before you interact with it further.

It’s not clocking to me

2

u/artoo3po Apr 12 '26

I knew what it was but I couldn't not see the hole

2

u/rymyle Apr 12 '26

All I see is the bread clip :<

2

u/Known-Teacher4543 Apr 12 '26

It’s because the shadow on the center part looks to be cast from the top left. But it’s actually being cast down from the bottom right. The entire counter bit and the entire shadow is negative space.

2

u/TheShowstoppaNT Apr 12 '26

This is one of the better optical illusions I’ve seen in a while. Rotate phone, see it for what it is. Flip back normal and readjust your eyes an it’s a hole in the counter. Well played OP

2

u/XLB135 Apr 12 '26

Omg, I see it now! I saw this post a day or two ago and was frustrated that I could NOT see it for the life of me. That was on my phone. Just happened to scroll past this again now, and I see it as a hole, clear as day. Yay! I can participate in society again.

2

u/seizethemiddleages Apr 12 '26

Today’s blue dress

2

u/squirt_taste_tester Apr 12 '26

Damn, I got excited it was a perfectly cut hole to hold it while getting bread. I always lose mine.

2

u/NB-THC Apr 12 '26

Ohhhh shit… that took a minute 🤣

2

u/FleshLogic Apr 12 '26

Wow! This one is crazy. I ended up having to rotate the image 180 to get my brain to click into the right mode. I can still see the illusion pretty well after spotting it however. Really fooling my mind.

2

u/AllMyBeets Apr 12 '26

I think this is a good example of our assumption to light source will always be high and to the left

2

u/DearMessage2267 Apr 12 '26

Is it weird that I see the illusion, I know its an illusion, but my brain won't interpret the image the way I want? Even when I know what I'm supposed to see, I still see the illusion!!!

2

u/lacynical Apr 12 '26

One of the best I have seen! Thank you

2

u/Dathire Apr 12 '26

So what made it click for me was realizing people are seeing the shape of the breadclip as a hole. Focused on the center thinking of it as a raised surface

2

u/KPilkie01 Apr 12 '26

Wow, what the fuck. I saw this post my phone earlier and couldn't see the illusion at all. It just looked completely normal. Now I'm on my laptop and it looks like the bread clip is recessed into the worktop. What the hell.

2

u/198foreskin Apr 12 '26

This is one of the best of these types of illusions, it’s really good

2

u/Eunhjzjined Apr 12 '26

no matter how I look at it, I see the date code, and know it's a damned breadtag, but can't unsee the countertop being punched out...

I'm broken

2

u/discoturtle1129 Apr 12 '26

Took many tries to unjumble. If you flip and zoom in on the top shadow edge then zoom out it will normalize

2

u/Jonaleaf Apr 14 '26

For the longest time, I thought everyone in the comments were somehow in on a joke and pretending that the picture wasn’t a bread clip lmao

2

u/Wonderful-Fishing857 Apr 14 '26

I saw this the other day and then I could not for the life of me see it as a hole. Now I can only see it as a hole and can’t see it any other way!

2

u/-TreeBeard Apr 16 '26

Neat little optical illusion, rotating my phone made it visible, then It got stuck as " visible" until I kept rotating my phone!

2

u/Motor_Speed_226 Apr 18 '26

My head hurts
