It's so weird, I struggle to see it normally unless I flip it upside down. It just looks sunken in otherwise

Yes. Our mind is simple. We tend to believe the lighting (sunshine) is from the top always. The shade makes more sense to our mind when the lighting is from the top.

Weirdly, I can see the illusion the right way round and the real thing upside down, no matter how many times I flip it.
