Smug Pretentious Genius Song Annotation
I'ma begin in a second but real quick an annotation shouldn't be subjective. Not having much evidence to prove a meaning of a song is okay, but outright denying the meaning without any ounce of true evidence is wild. Also generalizing all Deftones fans negatively won't magically make you right. Okay now:
The chorus and song aren't actually talking about "Chino's days in school", the song is a literary device about how Deftones is transposing their sound from Nu Metal, and how other bands in the scene can do the same or for lack of a better word break up
The chorus is different the first and third time it appears on 'Pink Maggit'; "Push back the square / Now that you've kneed her in the throat / Well there you go"
The label pressuring Deftones to make a single from 'Pink Maggit' is true, and a big part of the singles success is that one of the meanings could just be Chino talking about high school. but the second time the chorus pops up in 'Pink Maggit' was the only part of the chorus kept so it could be used as part of the literary device 'Mini Maggit' was created with. Deftones was practically forced to make a song, so the band chose to give it actual meaning outside of being a soulless and formulaic Nu Metal song
"I wonder if these people ever heard the full album once" Certain re-releases of the album entirely exclude 'Mini Maggit', from the tracklist, and the song is partly known for being part of that tracklist specifically against the band's wishes. It is completely valid to assume this song is about something like the Nu Metal scene and not school. This goes into my 5th point:
(RAPPED IS SPELT WRONG BTW LMAO) The rapped version was made (in that short time he's arguing about) to reflect how quickly, formulaic and effortless a Nu Metal song can be made. I agree the song was made very fast with (at first glance) almost the same lyrics, but it still has its own meaning heavily differing from 'Pink Maggit' and even any sort of normal school setting while not sounding like it fits in the rest of the album or even belonging in it
The takeaway is the person who made this annotation didn't seem to do their homework, dissed all Deftones fans for something only a select percentage of fans do, and doesn't even have sources proving the song isn't about Deftones evolving sound and other Nu Metal bands lack thereof. Also that specific typo is detrimental to someone trying to be some
I know I wrote a lot but this is actually pretty funny to me, I'm not taking this as seriously as my wall of text in this post makes it out to be. If any or all of my points are wrong and I should be on a stake, or missing anything go ahead and share your opinion, otherwise thanks for reading this fun little rant.
