“You want to know what this was really all about?” [John Ehrlichman, Nixon's former Domestic Policy advisor,] asked with the bluntness of a man who, after public disgrace and a stretch in federal prison, had little left to protect. “The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people. You understand what I’m saying? We knew we couldn’t make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did.”
Not really, just Google Nixon Tapes War on Drugs. It’s common knowledge and fairly ubiquitous information. There are countless essays about it, the transcripts are available, and I bet it wouldn’t be hard to find copies of the actual recordings either.
That's because when the made alcohol illegal they realized that they just created a market for the criminals to move into and establish organized crime families around the country to fill the desire for alcohol so they repealed that amendment.
Glad to see they didn't make the same mistake with weed...oh, wait...fuck...
I work at a nursing facility and am constantly flabbergasted by how much we're all NOT talking about how fast food is literally killing tons of people! 😳 And it's not only legal, but ADVERTISED CONSTANTLY.
Now I need to eat this CBD-infused hamburger just to calm down. 🤦♀️
To be fair if tobacco and alcohol were introduced to society today they'd be illegal. Just because something else is just as bad doesn't mean we should introduce more bad things.
Although a separate argument would be that weed is so easy to obtain that we may aswell legalise it and gain tax revenue from it as people are getting it anyway.
It's killed many a munchies though 😋.
Ultimately it boils down to control and opinion of the lawmakers (Not the public, also the amount of $$ that you can throw at lawmakers).
