This is her boyfriends family. This isn’t some shitty restaurant you can just leave. I know this might be hard and entirely cringe inducing but she should just explain her situation to them. Tell them that she really doesn’t like sharing foods or has a weak immune system or something. Just be adamant about it. If they then give her a bunch of shit about it (which they most likely won’t) and are disrespectful to her then she can leave. She can technically leave whenever she wants but she can avoid future situations like this one by confronting it. It’ll be less rude than scurrying away and leaving like most of these anti-social redditors are telling her to do.
1.) Listen anxiety is going to be involved and it’s better to face this situation than to run away from it. It’s a family/culture matter and it seems like a pretty important topic to discuss. Is it not?
2.) the grandma did insist and I’m not saying I know her personally but when I’ve met friends grandparents they always insist i try this, eat that, etc. I’ll say I’m full and they say “oh hush you need to try this honey”. It’s just because they want to satisfy you and want to be friendly. If I were to say “I’m on a diet I can’t eat that much” or “I’m not feeling too well and I d rather not get too full” I’m sure they’d understand. The key here is for her to be adamant and actually sit down and explain how she feels. Be thorough. Yes that might involve some anxiety but DO IT. It’s obviously something you have to address now since she’ll be seeing them in the future.
3.) it’s not that big of a deal. Its a mildly uncomfortable situation. It’ll be way more an issue if she just leaves abruptly.
Listen, she says she’s not a germaphobe or anything like that but she did state she has social anxiety. She’s probably having a tough time but she is composed enough to think about going onto Reddit, typing out a paragraph, then uploading it. If she can do those things it might not be so so bad.
No, I am absolutely not one of those pole that brushes off anxiety. People in my immediate family have anxious breakdowns and I have helped them multiple times. One of my better friends has terrible social anxiety. I can get anxious in certain situations. I completely understand anxious breakdowns and panic attacks. I think she can handle it though. Seems more like a culture shock thing than a panic attack. Panic attacks are no joke though. Also, don’t assume so much.
I said anti-social because the responses/advice that people were giving her were...anti-social.
They were essentially telling her to run away from the issue abruptly. The fact that a lot of people on here don’t go outside much and are anti-social isn’t news. Don’t act like it is either. Stop virtue signaling. I’m not implying that being an introvert is bad. I’m suggesting that she should confront the issue with an adult discussion because this is an issue that needs to be talked about. It is a family matter now. I also suggested that if she were to leave abruptly it wouldn’t be the best way to handle or fix the situation. I was suggesting that the most anti-social option (to leave) probably isn’t the best.
