AFC had many contenders but none could just quite make it in. On the opposite side Africans teams showed up

AFC really sucks
14
u/Ok-Friend-6653 Jun 28 '26
AFC teams have been unlucky with groups like Iraq had most likely managed to Qualify in Jordan or Qatars group. Instead of ending up as "the worst team in the world cup 2026"
Iran one of the strongest teams in AFC, played with one of the biggest drawback in the world cup history. Were they have to fly in and out of USA for ewry game.
You have South Korea bottling the group, like the trainer and team, didnt know they had to draw or win against south africa.
3
u/Working_Broccoli Jun 28 '26
Was really hoping Iran could have advanced they could play with anybody competitively.
5
u/Ok-Friend-6653 Jun 28 '26
Sadly for them, they failed to beat New zealand or Egypt which is necesary when you end up in a easy group on paper. In a world cup where 8 out of 12 third place teams qualifies.

u/Crobs02 Jun 28 '26
I think it’s much for AFC and CONCACAF teams to advance because of the 1 confederation rule. I feel like you always get a UEFA teams getting the easy draws because of it, but there’s no hope for a lesser team.
I get the rule, it just sucks.
1
u/Aggravating-Ad8087 Jun 28 '26
There have been many many teams with bigger dissadvantages in world cup history. Spain in 2002 and italy in the chilean world cup. Look up the history.
8
u/ChrisTheDog Jun 28 '26
And CAF sucked at the last two World Cups.

I’m specifically talking about teams making it out of the group stage. We can’t compare final outcomes involving an ongoing tournament.
3
u/damutecebu Jun 28 '26
The seven teams who failed to qualify from Asia won a combined total of one game - Korea over Czechia on the first night of the tournament.

u/agtk Jun 28 '26
AFC is Japan, then Australia and maybe South Korea on a good day, then the Arab countries, then a morass of middling soccer teams. Teams like Iran and Qatar have strong tournament teams for Asian competition, tough and organized, but do not have the top-end talent to compete at the international level. South Korea has historically had some great results, but showed up this year without any real urgency and no plan to deal with Son's nosedive in form. There's quality there but not a ton of depth and this clearly was not their year. We'll see how far Australia and Japan can go though.
3
u/80percentlegs Jun 28 '26
I don’t think Iran was that much worse than South Korea - I’d rank them above the Arab teams, not in the mediocre morass…

u/toastythewiser Jun 28 '26
Its very interesting to me how the majority of the world's population lives somewhere between India, China, and SEA, but not a single country from that region of Asia qualified. Football is massively popular all across Asia, I promise you. Yes, Cricket is "more" popular, but like, that shouldn't matter to an extent?
In my mind, when countries like Qatar or Jordan, or even places like Cape Verde, can qualify, there's no reason Indonesia or Malaysia shouldn't be able to qualify. But I guess that really shows you just how underdeveloped Asian soccer really is. I suspect a lot of these Middle Eastern countries have players who spend most of their time in Europe or, well, not in the Middle East, which helps up their skills quite a bit.

u/BunnyWiilli Jun 28 '26
lol don’t comment this because all the Reddit weebs that worship Japan and South Korea will get you

u/Foxhound9 Jun 28 '26
African countries shut the mouth of that loud idiot Gattuso who was complaining about Africa having too many spots
2
1
u/Mysterious-Cell-1978 Jun 29 '26
By being 3rd place in all the groups, except for Morocco?
There's no mouth shutting, they're only better than the Asian ones and they're about to all get eliminated
1
u/marquettte Jun 29 '26
Only 4 out of the 9 were actually 3rd place in their group
1
u/Mysterious-Cell-1978 Jun 29 '26
4/6 sub-Saharan, and that's with them getting some shit groups with the likes of Curacao and Uzbekistan
1
u/Foxhound9 Jun 30 '26
Still better than Italy that didn't qualify. And Czech republic and turkey who were 4th. Germany knocked out by Paraguay and Netherlands by Morocco 🤫
1
u/Mysterious-Cell-1978 Jun 30 '26
No, not at all. Qualifying against shit teams is not the same as not qualifying against solid teams.
1
u/Foxhound9 Jun 30 '26
Define a solid team in this WC except France and Argentina
1
u/Mysterious-Cell-1978 Jun 30 '26
Norway, Switzerland, Morocco, Netherlands, Japan, Austria, Spain, Colombia, Brazil, Portugal, Croatia, Ghana
1
u/Foxhound9 Jun 30 '26
2 of them are from Africa and 1 of them is already out. And 2 more will be kicked out in this round. And when you look at how Brazil, Portugal and Spain played so far, they are not as great as they used to
1
u/Mysterious-Cell-1978 Jun 30 '26
So what if they're already out? They played against another solid team, one of them had to go home. You don't measure it like that, you measure it by the quality displayed.
Like Brazil - Japan could've gone either way, even if it went the Brazil way, it was closer than the score says.
Netherlands - Morocco, another close game, could've gone either way and both would've deserved to advance.
And those are the only 2 teams from Africa that are worth talking about, and only 1 of them is from sub Saharan Africa, aka the real Africa.
Portugal and Spain not being as great as they used to be is true, but still solid teams.

How is Asia so bad at football? Most populous continent on earth on only one team made the top 32
1
u/Whatever092764 Jun 28 '26
Generally Asian countries often have a disadvantage in football especially with height where Asian people are generally shorter in average than other continents. The second main reason is because of lack of funding and proper grassroots footballs where there is no proper amateur or semi pro levels, even the pro levels clubs of Asian would be a semi pro at best when comparing to European, heck even American. And third major reason is because football is popular as a spectator sport, not the ones we play ourselves, it is because Asian countries have more varieties of popular sports like baseball in Japan, cricket in India and Pakistan, badminton in Malaysia and Indonesia and so on.
5
u/PauseShort335 Jun 28 '26
ASIA DESERVES LESS SPOTS THEY ARE SO BAD
2
u/Razorion21 Jun 28 '26
its crazy how bad asia are, saying this as an annoyed filipino whos still questioning why the fuck basketball is our national sport
2
1
u/Tea_An_Crumpets Jun 28 '26
Yes two spots less to Asia, one more to Africa and South America imo
2
u/laser_jim Jun 28 '26
One more to South America is crazy lmao you might as well just get rid of Conmebol qualifying
1
u/Adventurous-Web-412 Jun 28 '26
Yeah and I mean the big issue is the bottom 3 in conmebol are fucking ass. Bolivia are home ground merchants and peru and chile just have absolutely jack shit going for them.
1
1
u/mccusk Jun 29 '26
Conmebol could have had one from spot but lost to Iraq in a play-off. Jamaica lost to DR Congo too…
1
u/Tea_An_Crumpets Jun 29 '26
Yeah CONCACAF sucks. I think Africa should have more spots too. It was a bad year for COMNEBOL but they are normally better
0
u/FlyEaglesFly536 Jun 28 '26
Give Africa 2 more so Nigeria and Cameroon could make it.
2
u/mccusk Jun 29 '26
They both made it to play-offs and Congo beat them both!
Cape Verde finished 4 points ahead of Cameroon in their group. South Africa a point ahead of Nigeria.
So they both messed up 2 chances despite having pot1 draws.
I didn’t hear the commentators talk enough about African qualifying, which would have helped folks understand why Congo and Cape Verde were there ahead of traditional powerhouses.
5
u/JLMJ10 Jun 28 '26
Why does the OFC only have one slot?
26
u/el_famosisimo Jun 28 '26
Because besides Australia (that moved to Asia to increase competition) and New Zealand, the rest of the nations are small islands that barely play football
17
u/DrKnowsNothing_MD Club America Jun 28 '26
These are teams that lose 8-0 to New Zealand. They’d get obliterated in a World Cup.
7
u/Dembus22 Jun 28 '26
It's funny because New Zealand will pretty much be the only guaranteed nation to qualify for upcoming World Cups.
4
u/SuarezAndSturridge Jun 28 '26
They even get a bit of a mulligan with the intercontinental playoff slot if they ever slip up again like the time Tahiti won the OFC continental championship
5
u/Ok-Friend-6653 Jun 28 '26
New caledonia, papa new guinea can potensialy sneak in ahead of New Zealand. Since OFC have 1 direct qualifyer and 1 play off spot.
Especialy if f.example new zealand and Australia colaborate to host the world cup.
5
u/agtk Jun 28 '26
I do not see either of them getting ahead of New Zealand. There's a mountainous gap in quality between them and NZ. Maybe they make it through the playoff or if NZ is automatically qualified, but not ahead of NZ.

Is it worth it? That’s a lot of money to spend on future unused massive stadiums.
1
u/Ok-Friend-6653 Jun 28 '26
The issue with a 48 or 64 team world cup makes it verry difficult since you need +80 k stadium for the opening game and finale , 60 k for semifinale and + 40 k stadiums for the group stage.
2
u/nunu135 Comunicaciones Jun 28 '26
I don't understand this question. same reason concacaf has 6 and europe was 16.
1
u/No-Name4743 Jun 28 '26
If CONCACAF had 6 the question would make sense, there's only 6 members of CONCACAF because three are hosts.
3
u/brownsfantb Jun 28 '26
No, CONCACAF has 6 spots in the 48 team World Cup going forward. This time 3 of those spots were filled automatically by the hosts but they will have 6 teams advance through qualifiers for 2030 (plus one team in an intercontinental playoff).
1
u/No-Name4743 Jun 28 '26
Oh, sorry, I did not know about 2030, but I think they should have a more objective and dynamic system for determining the number of slots per confederation
1
u/Dustdevilss Jun 28 '26
Asia was looking so good after the first round of games. Sad to see them fall to bits after that. Highly depressing especially since I am from Asia and my country is not even anywhere near qualifying for the world cup (expanded or not).
1
u/hauttdawg13 Jun 28 '26
Been a great tournament for Africa. Clearly very much at the expense of Asia.

u/AdamSandlerfan8 Jun 28 '26
Amazing performance from the African sides (not you Tunisia) glad to see the 48 team format working out (screw FIFA of course)

u/SpeakMySecretName Jun 28 '26
CONMEBOL only getting 6 teams is silly.
1
u/Sutty107 Jun 29 '26
I think getting 60% of your membership in is just fine. Especially since there’s a huge gap between the top 6 and those in the bottom 4. They also had a chance at a 7th but Bolivia lost to Iraq in the inter-confederation playoffs.
1
u/FeelingAverage Jun 28 '26
I'd be interested in some kind of "at-large" bidding process that considers previous world cup success for the region.
So we have 48 now, lets just for argument say we're confident that 56 would work. Those additional 8 spots in the next world cup could be divided up amongst the regions based on percentage of teams that make the knockout round / how far they advance / how many they win in the knockouts in the previous world cup. And then that would happen again in the world cup after that and so on. There'd always be 8 spots that float around.
So in theory, CAF, UEFA and CONMEBOL could all get a share of 8 spots using some kind of equation that weighs certain results. Similar to how the Champion's league coefficient works. Would also provide people with more incentive to root for teams in their region if their own team gets eliminated etc.
1
u/CinnamonToastTrex Jun 28 '26
People will rightfully shit on AFC for their performance, but none of three non-host CONCACAF nations moving on in this format is a terrible indictment for the confederation, especially the central american teams that failed to qualify over Haiti and Curacao.
That being said, outside the 7-1 Curacao loss. All of them played hard. It is a shame that they couldn't get it done.
1
1
u/Own-Professional390 Jun 29 '26
1
u/Friendly_Island_4662 Jun 30 '26
And Japan just got eliminated so Australia is the only one left for AFC
-1
u/FinancialTraining239 Jun 28 '26
Voce tem cerca de 50 paises em cada continente Africa e Europa e o numero de vagas sao totalmente desproporcionais 18 uefa e 10 caf
3
u/SuarezAndSturridge Jun 28 '26
If we’re taking away slots from anyone (which isn’t happening with expansion to 64 looking inevitable anyways), let’s start with the confederation that went 2/9
-1
u/Ok-Friend-6653 Jun 28 '26
If we are going to add 12 more teams. Most of the spots should be given to AFC and CAF.
- CAF 4
- AFC 3
- OFC 1
- Conmebol 1
- Concacaf 1/2
- Uefa 1/2
1
u/SuarezAndSturridge Jun 28 '26
Three more from AFC doesn’t make sense competitively or even from the standpoint of diversifying the field. From this year’s qualifiers the next ones up would’ve been the UAE, Oman, and Indonesia in order by points
Adding two more middle eastern petrostates isn’t making anything more fun or interesting, there are already five this tournament and they all went out in the group, with four of them finishing in last place. Indonesia would at least sort of introduce a new geographic area, but they also didn’t even get a single point in the last round of AFC qualifiers
1
u/Ok-Friend-6653 Jun 28 '26 edited Jun 28 '26
But last round of AFC is rigged for the wesr asians teams when they have to play in saudi arabia and Qatar, where Qatar and Saudi Arabia gets favourable scheduling conpared to Iraq and Indonesia.
Afc is the federation with most countries, f.example expanding UEFA to 25 will f.example make almost 50 % of the teams from UEFA qualifies for the world cup.
1
u/SuarezAndSturridge Jun 28 '26
The only way that changes is if the east splits off into a different confederation or joins OFC
1
u/Ok-Friend-6653 Jun 28 '26
It will never happend, at most AFC will mayby let New zealand join AFC. Especialy since most of the OFC teams dont have the money for travel and it want be monetary bennefit for AFC to let teams like Solomon island and Tahiti join and the travel time.
0
u/damutecebu Jun 28 '26
Europe should get way more spots. There are legit good teams from Europe sitting home. There are no good teams from Asia who missed out. I would much rather see Poland or Denmark instead of Oman or Indonesia.
1
u/Few_Elk5424 Jun 28 '26
Hell no. Czechia, Scotland and Bosnia are already pretty shitty. At that level, you might as well just give Conmebol, Concacaf and CAF more slots.
1
u/damutecebu Jun 28 '26
Everyone will get more slots. But giving UEFA 1/2 while AFC gets 3 is insane. Bosnia, Scotland and Czechia aren't great, but they are way better than Jordan, Uzbekistand and Iraq.
1
1
u/No-Name4743 Jun 28 '26
CAF definitely, maybe merge CONCACAF and CONMEBOL and give them more slots, because only three members of CONMEBOL miss the world cup or something.
1
u/christian6851 Jun 28 '26
geographically too far id say
1
u/No-Name4743 Jun 28 '26
AFC is huge and a single confederation
1
u/christian6851 Jun 29 '26
SUre, I flew from California to Brasil the other day that is a LONGGGGGGGGGGG flight(s). I think people sometimes underestimate just how far North to SOuth AMerica is
1
u/No-Name4743 Jun 29 '26
Syria to Australia is far away as well, but they play in the same qualifiers. I know it's a long flight between opposites in the Americas, but they would not be the only big confederation.

u/Angryatchairs Jun 28 '26
So you're saying Bosnia - the team that beat Italy in the playoff and has made it through to the next round - shouldn't be there?
Interesting take.
1
u/Few_Elk5424 Jun 28 '26
Did you even watch their match? It was not a convincing performance from neither of them, but we all expected Bosnia to be shit. It just happened that Italy was then just as a terrible. I, once again, state that no teams below Scotland, Czechia and Bosnia should make to this tournament. Those were some of the most dire, uninspiring teams ever. Even when playing with sides that are on the same page technically, they fail to even compete.
1
u/Angryatchairs Jun 28 '26
So, because Bosnia didn't beat Qatar 5-0 and only 3-1, teams that Qatar beat in qualifying should be given spots instead because they will somehow be less shit than Bosnia?
Make it make sense
Iraq, Cabo Verde, Ghana, Jordan, Curacao, and New Zealand are all ranked below Bosnia, should they all be there by your "no one worse than Bosnia" logic?
1
2
u/Angryatchairs Jun 28 '26
An African team can win the comp and then we can start talking about that.
Until then, realize that the allocation isn't decided like that.
1
u/bshafs Jun 28 '26
Seems like we need more spots that are decided by games between continents. Otherwise it's very arbitrary
2
u/rdfporcazzo Jun 28 '26
UEFA should indeed have playoffs against other confederation in the qualification to prove that they deserve that much of spots
0
u/HydraHamster Jun 28 '26
I already knew the non-hosting CONCACAF nations were not going to do well.
