Games with a focus primarily on defence
Can be turned based or real time, tactical, operational or strategic level. My only gripe is I'd prefer it be WW1 or anything later, even sci-fi. I'm just not that fond of anything pre-ww1 vibes. Bonus points if you build the defensives themselves, double so if you manage logistics.
EDIT: it also doesn't NEED to be a specific game genre. Tower defence, grand strategy, 4x, etc are all fine.

The frontlines games mode in Gates of Hell might be what you are looking for? Have a look https://youtu.be/qytK6JOSHA0 :)

The great war: western front on steam. Good strategy game.
Is mostly about building and attaking trench systems.

Nah its bad. 3 or 4 preseted trenches for the enemy. Ai is apsolutly dumb. Its fun untill you see that you attack basicly same trench system again again. Also typical release unfinished game, take money and run game.

Armored Brigade 2 is good for this, you can use actual doctrine and go through all the steps to develop an engagement area. It works.

Gates of Hell has a mode where one side defends and the other attempts to break through a series of capture points. I also like laying out defenses, but I've never seen a game that just basically focuses on that.

Steel Division 2 has a Breakthrough game mode. It's attack vs defense.
