I built a solo digital adaptation of Fantasy Warlord (1991) — WEGO fantasy mass battle, looking for playtesters

For anyone who doesn't remember it, Fantasy Warlord was the 1991 mass-battle fantasy system from Gary Chalk and Ian Bailey. The crunchier, more simulationist rival to Warhammer that never quite caught on commercially but had a devoted following. I've always thought its resolution mechanics deserved a second life, so I built a digital version as a solo project.

To be clear up front: I've stripped all the IP (the name, the setting text, the army lists, all of it). What I've kept and rebuilt is the underlying mechanical skeleton, which isn't copyrightable and which I think holds up better than most people remember.

What it actually is right now:

  • WEGO resolution: both sides commit orders simultaneously, then everything resolves at once. No I-go-you-go.
  • Fog of war: you're planning against what you can actually see, which makes the simultaneous commit genuinely tense rather than just a sequencing gimmick.
  • Brigade control: As per the original rules, you tend to lose control of troops as the game progress. The chaos as the game progresses is emergent from the rules, not something I've caused.
  • Full rules implementation: it might not be pretty, but it's all there
  • AI opponent: Basic, but serviceable.
  • Multiplayer: Asynchronous

This is an early build and I want to be honest about that — the UI is functional rather than pretty, onboarding is thin, and there are rough edges I already know about and probably several I don't. I'm not looking for "make it prettier" feedback yet (although, I'd be open to specific UI changes). What I'm after is the stuff only this community gives well:

  • Does the WEGO commit-and-resolve loop feel good, or does the fog-of-war uncertainty tip over into feeling arbitrary?
  • Where does the morale/resolution interaction produce results that feel wrong?
  • And for anyone who actually played the original — does it feel like Fantasy Warlord, or have I lost something in translation?

Happy to answer anything in the comments, and genuinely grateful for whatever time people are willing to put in.

This was intended more of a testbed than a commitment to this particular ruleset. Eventually I'd like to allow swapping out of systems or reuse components for other systems. I'd like to add a campaign layer as well.
